If I have to be killed by a crazy pentagon drone, I damn well expect it to a faithful Optimus Prime replica. Good work, mad scientists, you're on the right track!

I could have sworn this exact story was published a year or two ago. Guess they've made some huge advances between now and then with the concept.

Either this is real and we are in for some awesome technological advances, or that's just really epic stop motion.

If you really want to tie this to Transformers in a meta-fictional sense:

This just goes to show that if there really were a race of sentient metamorphic machines, they would (like this prototype) be very flexible in every sense of the word. Their abilities would be FAR more like the advanced, fluid transformational abilities of the movie-verse bots*, rather than the blocky stiff G1-style Transformers.

Being tied to one or two alt. modes is a remnant of eighties era ideas of what a "robot" is and would be capable of. These days, in the era of nanotechnology and microscopic circuitry, "robotics" is a whole different animal.

Honestly (and oddly), this just makes me want to see more Transformers with multiple alt.modes.

    * = As has been pointed out before, the movie-verse bots not only don't seem to be locked into a particular alt.mode, they don't even have a specific transformation scheme. Their parts shift and move in a completely different way with every transformation, and they seem to be able to "absorb" and "regrow" parts at will. They don't actually "transform" so much as fold and shift their bodies around to mimic the appearance of what they scan.

The natural progression of this is, of course, multiple (potentially unlimited) "alternate modes".

Perhaps not practical from a toy making standpoint, but it would make for some darn interesting (and more realistic) fiction.

Can its boat mode float on water, or its plane mode fly?

I disagree, the limitations make them interesting. In the same way that a Terminator (from Terminators) was more interesting when it was confined to one shape instead of anything T1000. For Transformers lore I absolutely hope that, that idea is never even considered. Maybe it would be interesting for ONE transformer in a series, or better yet something not called Transformers. Limitations and working within a set boundries is what makes the lore interesting.
