so the combaticons were made using the personality circuits from decepticon political prisoners. Question is what did they do.

so i cooked up a couple of ideas

    Swindle- dodgy dealing selling arms
    Onslaught- organising criminal activity
Brawl- starting fights with other decepticons/ not obeing orders

any other ideas ive no clue about blast off and vortex

It was probably just as simple as they didn't want to follow Megatron's orders and went off to do their own thing, which while evil, was probably working directly against Megatron's goals.

If I would have to make a guess, I'd say that Blastoff and Vortex were probably just guilty of aiding and abetting whatever Onslaught was up to.

I'd agree, I think the five of them were all in on their crimes together, based on how well they got along once released. Maybe Onslaught was planning to overthrow Megatron but was exposed by Soundwave, Laserbeak or another spy before he could initiate the coup.

Causing mischief on the Cybertronian World of Warcraft servers by engaging in various dubious "military" tactics (powerleveling, gold farming, spawn camping, etc.).

    Combaticons

Now someone needs to find out what their original forms were.

Whoever wrote that pulled it from the same source I did: their butt. The reason their personality components are in the detention center is never stated in the "Starscream's Brigade" episode, or anywhere else.

Do you have a better explanation?

The explanation from Wikipedia sounds fine.
The writer(s) of Starscream's Brigade could have been more creative, but Hasbro just wanted to sell toys.
