This is about as accurate as you get. I won't spoil it for you since I don't know how far you've gotten, but there are a few references to G1 during later episodes. That may help explain the correlation for BW to G1.

Just like in Cybertron, there was a reference when Primus explained to the autobots about the four cyber planet keys. When he does you see a G1 prime, rodimus, jazz and I can't remember the other one who are the supposed guardians of the keys from the ancient past...

loose references is all it is IMHO

Perhaps in the same sense that a 2 gigahertz laptop computer of today is the 'descendant' of a 4 megahertz desktop PC of 1982.

I was just about to use that analogy. Ipod is the descendant of a cassette walkman

And I was wrong about Primal, it is his name sake according to the tf wiki.

However, don't breeze past the fact that the whole series was originally intended to not even be a Transformers series, and that they went with the Transformers history late in the production of the show. So when it comes down to it, the names were picked for the same reason as they were for A/E/C, RID, and every other alternate take on the series, name recognition for the leaders.
