It’s probably safe to say that the big three for the Decepticons are Megatron, Starscream, and Soundwave.

As for the Autobots, Optimus Prime is a given but who would be the other two? I’d think the popular choices would be some combination of Jazz, Bumblebee, Grimlock, Hot Rod? But I’d be curious as to who the fans think are the big three for the Autobots.

I'd say it really depends on what series:

    G1:
Autobots: Optimus Prime, Grimlock and Jazz/Prowl
    Decepticons: Megatron, Starscream and Soundwave

    BW:
Maximals: Optimus Primal, Rhinox and Rattrap
    Predacons: Megatron, Tarrantulas and Blackarachnia

    RID:
Autobots: Optimus Prime, Ultra Magnus and Prowl
    Decepticons/Predacons: Megatron, Scourge and Ruination

    A/E/C:
Autobots: Optimus Prime, Jetfire and Hot Shot
    Decepticons: Megatron, Starscream and Demolishor

Yeah I was thinking of G1.

I forgot to list my three Autobots:

    Optimus Prime
    Jazz
    Bumblebee

When I posted my question I was thinking more along the lines of popularity but could see the list being much different based on importance.

After OPTIMUS I'd say BUMBLEBEE and JAZZ. BUMBLEBEE is obvious to me as he's the 'human bridge', and I guess most people would remember a 'Porsche Transformer', even if they didn't recall the name.
One thing's for sure: It isn't as cut and dried as with the Decepticons.

The three who form heart of the Autobots (for me at least) are Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and IronHide

In terms of screen time pre-movie, it was Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and I think Ironhide

    G1:

Decepticons: Megatron, Starscream, Soundwave or Shockwave

Autobot: Prime, Grimlock, BB or Rodimus

We must remember that popularity doesn’t always reflect importance.

If I was to clump every Transformer series together and generalize the Autobot archetypes that show up, the first two choices would be obvious:

-Optimus Prime (with color choice and design being only a tiny variable)
-The yellow "brash buddy" character (Hot Shot, Bumblebee, Cheetor, etc.) (This archetype, of course, could be swung either way - he could be the upstart second-in-command who wants to prove his ability as a leader or he could be the "li'l buddy" character who is just fine in his position as tag-a-long.) He's usually yellow, too, so I'd stick with that color scheme.

Now...for the third, I dunno. I think Armada hit it right with the tall, strong, silent law-enforcement type of character. I'd go with that type of character, be they named "Prowl" or "Ironhide" or "Red Alert" or whomever. That third character gives Optimus Prime an intelligent, serious-minded confidant off of which he can bounce ideas for battle strategy.

Yeah, I'd go with Optimus Prime, "the yellow brash guy," and "the emergency vehicle officer type."

G1 Pre-movie: Optimus, BumbleBee, and either Ironhide or Jazz.

G1 Post-movie: Rodimus, Ultra Magnus, and either Kup or Springer.

Optimus and Bumblebee for sure. After that, I'd argue there's NOT a big third Autobot. There's a preceptious drop, after which Grimlock, Hot Rod, Ironhide, and Jazz probably reside in the collective concious.

For that matter, I think there's a good solid 7 or 8 Decepticons that are more recognizable than ANY Autobots other than Optimus and Bumblebee.

Christ, don't say Grimlock. Me can't stand his poor diction and grammor.
