I do hope that the extreme irony of belittling repaints in Beast Wars (a line consisting originally of brand new designs) by comparing them with G1 (which was originally entirely comprised of repaints from other lines) isn't lost on everyone.

I know you THINK that, but seriously, count 'em. Beast Wars only has twelve repaints, including exclusives and fox kids repaints.

Beast Machines had NO repainted characters, only the four battle platforms were repainted.

    Cybertron had nine repaints.

Rid had a fair few, most of them spychangers.

Why the spawn of SO MANY DIFFERENT Optimus Primes anyway?

Just like there's SO MANY different Screambugs around universe, only that just one of them is of course, ME!:rolleyes2

BW .. are we counting the BW 10th anniversary too? :)

    BM .. Aero Drone.

I guess there's two breeds of repaints (and remolds), repaints from within the same line, and ones brought in from older lines.

Cybertron had 28 repaints (including repaints/remolds brought in from other lines). 24 if you count the shadow recon team and the remolded armada race car minicon team as 1 each.

if you for some reason choose to ignore the seven that were brought in from other lines, thats still 18 repaints/remolds.

I don't want to try counting RID, as it was almost entirely repaints aside from 14 new molds (not counting spychangers, as I didnt keep up with them), or armada with it's minicon repaints, and even MORE japanese minicon repaints. RID is especially bad because hasbro used the line's name well into armada to fill with random store exclusive repaints... counting them all would be a headache. anyone want to give it a shot?

I'm not counting moulds from other lines brought in. The whole point is that everybody is complaining about moulds being used multiple times.

thats still 18 then. Cybertron had 10 molds from other lines brought in (5 armada remolds, 2 BW10th Anniversary, and three minicons).

and 18 is still quite a lot.

Oh, crap. I just realized I didnt even count all the damn minicon two packs. bump that number with other line molds brought in WAY up.

Forget the talk of repaints. THIS is what I miss about G1! (And BW/BM, though I was able to care about some of the Cybertron characters too.)

Actually, it was 5 battle platforms; 3 Deployers (Mol, Dillo, & Rav) and 2 Beast Riders (Che & Mechatron). That's 6 repaints intotal, including the Aero Drone (Sonic Attack Jet) that Feralstorm mentioned.

What I miss is the character development and that the fighting was more about actual fights than "SUPER POWER MODE YAAHAHAHAHA!!" Remember when Cliffjumper tried to basically assassinate Megatron? I got the feeling that if he had hit him it would have worked. It wasn't ALWAYS about the most powerful. Devastator got beat sometimes. The Dinobots got outwitted (by Megatron who turned them against Optimus) in an episode. It was a much more character driven show than any of the Energon, Armada, etc. I honestly can't stand to watch those and I REALLY tried. I honestly hope the new cartoon is a return to what made the original so great. Yeah G1 had some cheesy moments but it also had characters who you actually cared for not who acquired the newest powermode.

G1 had the worst plot armor ever. shots would randomly take a TF down with one hit, do nothing, or stand no chance in hell of even hitting the target.

The character aspect of G1 and BW are in my opinion what helped it get another season. No fancy power-up/supermove gimmicks, the transformate was alll the gimmick needed.

the "character development" Gears had in the show wanted me to punch the goddamn TV (changing gears is possibly the most painful to watch episode of anything ever made).

and don't get me started on Brawn in "microbots".

character traits out of f'ing NOWHERE.

I feel that toy makers are more "networked"..... try to pump out as much product and sit back. We have a variety now maybe? Not neccesarily bad right, I mean it makes the exclusives more.....exclusive?

    "there's something for everyone" lol/.

Boy almighty. The "I need to be right" stuff in this thread got really ridiculous, really fast.

I liked G1 because I grew up with it and I connect some fond memories to that time period. That's about it. I still re-watch some of the episodes while working on kitbashes and etc., and I still find it fun.

Did it have better animation? I dunno, occasionally. The three-parter and some of season 1 had pretty good animation. Season 3 had some wild moments re: animation. Rebirth was pretty clean and crisp, art-wise. There were times when the animation was good, times when it was off. Feh.

Did it have a better plot? Not really. I mean, the plots were generic "moral of the week" stories that either featured a character, a group of combiners or some variation on that. They sorta tied together every once and a while.

Did it have better toys? That's where stuff gets really subjective. I like my G1s because they remind me of the original TV show, but I really love the Classics for the same reason - and they're neat and articulated poseable and stuff. I sure as hell ain't gonna render a unilateral judgment for ALL the G1 toys or anything like that, though.

...and you know what? I still love the show. Sure, it's got flaws, but again - I'm biased. Regardless of those flaws, the reason I like it is because it was part of my socialization as a kid; I attach fond memories to that period of time in my life. As a result, I, personally, sometimes scoff at the modern variations of Transformers that get released. Does that make me bad? No. Does it make me biased? Yeah, a bit.

But hey - I'm open to change. G1 is great, but I'll check out anything with the Transformers name brand on it, just to see if it piques my interest.

Very true, there werent any gimmicks really, it was more about the charachters and that was sorely missing from the last few shows IMO.

Agree with most of what OWAT said. I look back at G1 fondly because I too grew up with it. It was my first exposure to Transformers. I like having G1s in my collection because they create a huge amount of nostalgia, even down to the way the combination of the die-cast, rubber and plastic smell.

Same with the show, it had it's flaws but I like to go back and watch it occationally and have a greate appreciation for the movie now. If I don't like a particular series, I won't buy toys, that's it. I don't go on a "Why isn't it this or that way" tirade. I have better things to do. That said. I look foward to the new movie, I have come to like the designs and think I am getting a chance 20 years later to see what I wanted when I was a kid. Transformers with a lean towards realism(as much as is possible with tranforming robots :)  ) I can't wait until July 8th (wife won't go with me until then).
