why was this transformer never in any of the cartoons or was it? why make a figure like this made and never seen on tv?
Has/Tak wanted to show that Primus is cruel, which explains the existence Whirl aswell. Primus = Jerk!
Transformers were a popular toyline...Hasbro wanted to expand it with other toys, just like they do with repaints and some new molds in current lines. Roadbuster wasn't the only one, there was Whirl and the deluxe Insecticons to name a few.
Same question here since many many years. Roadbuster was one of my bots of my childhood but never appears in tv.. too bad.
The toy was actually licenced from another toy line. He was also featured in the cartoon for that toy line in Japan, so they didn't include him in the show as part of the licencing agreement. I currently cannot remember the name of the show, but I think that Whril was also from the same show, and the deluxe Insecticons. Someone will be along soon to correct me, though, so listen to them.
n28: The Deluxe Autobots Roadbuster and Whirl were licensed from Takatoku, which already had another cartoon to advertise its toys. I would guess that had something to do with it. They both made it into the Marvel UK comics, as members of the Wreckers commando team. EDIT: I see Mechadoom has beat me to it. Allow me to add that Roadbuster and Whirl were from the anime ARMORED TROOPER DORVACK. The Deluxe Insecticons were indeed Takatoku toys, but starred in yet another show, ARMORED INSECT SQUADRON BEETRAS. As another bit of trivia, there were smaller versions of "Roadbuster" and "Whirl" available in Select's "Convertors" line, also licensed from Takatoku.
R: Can't help you there, but here's a site about the Convertors line: http://www.toyarchive.com/Convertors/Convertors.html I have only one Convertor, the mini-bot "Bird". He's probably as good as Windcharger but his wheels keep him from being as realistic as some of the GoBots with similar transforms.
Toywise, I think that Roadbuster have one of the most amazing and complex transformations for G1, although originally appears on Dorvac series.
