I know people are getting sick of classics threads, but this is something I really wanted to know. Titaniums are going to continue for a while, as far as I know, even through the movie releases. I was under the impression everything was going on hiatus until the movie stuff dies down. Well, I was curious why Titaniums would continue and not Classics? I do like Titaniums, but I like the designs of the Classics more, and I am pretty sure the Classics sold better. So, anyways, just wanted to know why they continued with Ti's and not Classics? I am guessing it has something to do with Galoob(?) making the actual Ti's instead of Hasbro. Just my guess.

Titaniums is a sub line like Alternators and Universe, the product is different enough to sell separately. The normal toylines are going on hiatus mostly because they're using more normal, conventional vehicles which is the focus of the movie figures, and similar items on the shelves at the same time is bad for sales. Titanium's designs are mostly futuristic and the unique die-cast construction makes them still desirable even when the movie toys are in full force.

That and it looks like Hasbro wants some 3" Titaniums for the movie.

I can see a more unorthodox line like Titaniums taking less attention away from the movie toys, so that makes sense. Also, the movie toys could be made into Ti's so that makes sense to.

Judging from what I have seen of the TMNT movie toys, the TF toys will sell regardless once the movie comes out, so I still think ultimately Hasbro would sell more with classics alongside movie toys then Ti's, but who knows?

Because Classics is going to "merge", if you will, with Titaniums. Like 6" Rodimus Prime. Without die-cast, he would've made a great Classics toy, as would the new 6" Ultra Magnus. Now, I'll be damned if I didn't want that Magnus in a Classics Voyager size, but the Titanium is just as good. Also, with Titaniums, they can pick from any toyline, show, or comic. It's definately more flexible than Classics, which was all G1.

Those are great qualitys of the Ti's, but it doesn't strike me as something that would keep one line going over another that sold more. At least, in Hasbros eyes.

How are you so sure that Classics sold more than Titaniums?

Maybe to the fans, but how about the public?

I am just assuming, none of this is factual which is really why I am asking. If someone with sales figures knows which sold better then great. I am basing my assumption on what the 13 or so retailers I go to carry- they have pretty much all stopped carrying Ti's and still get plenty of Classics.

there's also the fact that Titaniums arent made by the same group making the mainline toys. They have titaniums for Star Wars, Marvel, etc, so Titanium is more of its own franchise, rather than a subline for a larger franchise. As long as they go on making Titaniums for multiple franchies, they'll continue making them for TFs without affecting the mainline. Classics on the other hand WERE the mainline (for a very short time)

I think because Tis are collector oriented... very cool but you can't really play with them. It's either a pvc or a posable pvc.

Classics are part of the "play value" toy line. (they may appeal to collectors, but they're meant to be played with)

I still hope they do continue the Classics line after the movie is over. Even if there's another line for the new show. I want Thundercracker, Dirge and Thrust... more dinobots would be nice too.

Classics was a filler-line, and it will forever be a filler-line. It will never be a main, and, unless we hear anything else at BotCon, it will not be coming back.

You also have to account for online sales, a lot of shops online cant get rid of classics because they're easy to find at retail stores, but Titaniums fly out of their warehouse all the time. And plenty of retail stores still stock Titaniums.

It's a matter of percentages, imagine if 70% of all Classics at retail stores sell, that looks like a lot because you see so many at once. But if 90% of all Titaniums sell, it's the more popular line because it doesn't leave as much excess product, even if they aren't produced in the same numbers as Classics.

Perhaps they're shuffling G1 into a line which includes characters from other lines as they've decided G1 tributes on their own are not enough to support a main line... and they made it pretty clear that Classics is NOT a main line.

If Transformers continued to just revisit old characters over and over again, the line would wither, then a few years from now, there would be people complaining that Hasbro didn't do enough to develop new characters.... and when they do try to reinvent old characters, then some people react negatively to that too. (See movie)

Hasbro can't win; there'll always be someone who feels short changed.

Well, considering that Thundercracker, Ramjet and Dirge are all getting the Botcon treatment... I seriously doubt that Classics will continue. I mean, we all knew the score from the beginning that these would only last as a filler line to bridge the gap between the end of Cybertron and the beginning of the Movie. I think we should feel lucky that we even got Classics at all sense the original intent -looking at planned repaints for Cybertron and such- seemed to carry Cybertron to the point of the beginning of the Movie line. I for one am sad to see it go, but thankful that we got those that we did.

I wouldn't rule out seeing Classic-esque designs in Titaniums for those that want more G1 goodness ...Soundwave, Scourge, Rodimus Prime & Ultra Magnus are all nice examples of this. Though, they're more updated versions of the characters original G1 designs than how Classics seemed to be more about redesigning the character while keeping them similar at their core.

Also, Titaniums aren't so much a subgroup for TFs as TFs are a subgroup for Titaniums. Hence they really wouldn't interfere with the sales of the movie line the way that Classic might... granted we don't know, but Hasbro really wants to push the Movie so let them.

Finally, one last thing to consider is that Titaniums are more or less geared at collectors. Classics may appeal to collectors but they are designed to be toys first and foremost. It's obvious that Titaniums, with their die-cast construction and display stands, are meant to be collectors items more so than Classics or the Movie lines will ever be. Also, they have more leeway with what they can put into Titaniums unlike Classics. Titaniums so far has stuff from War Within, Generation 1, Beast Wars, Beast Machines, GI Joe Crossover & RID... which, IMPO, gives them a greater selection of merchandise to choose from... even if they aren't all on the shelves at once.

    Most were stated already, but:

-Titaniums isn't just a Transformers thing
-Far as I've heard, it has a different design team than the mainlines like Classics
-It seems to have more room for -total- fanwanky designs

I like the titaniums there the perfect thing for collectors, you can get stuff you wont get in a mainline (war within other universes) and old stuff people beg for (g1 mags rodimus etc). And it encompasses a lot of series so it won't be going anywhere for a bit.

And as for classics the line was a mini but they could always do like a universe thing, you know make a new toy here or there (i'm talking like 3 or 4 a year at most) and keep trying new stuff with the mainline.

Now if they did that with classics I'd hope it do better then universe

Technically Overbite, Nemesis Prime, and the four Micromaster Combiners were new toys, for the US at least. And rumor was the Dinobots from Energon were supposed to be released as Universe's first new molds.

These are all good reasons everyone, thanks.

I'm all for options, so I really don't like seeing any side line die since they all have potential for good molds/figures, but I really wasn't crazy over the choices they went with for Universe. I would be all about Classics becoming a line with some repaints and a few new molds a year. I am not counting on it though.

The Titanium line has a lot going for it. It's done by a different staff, which frees up the main design team; it has a much larger range of figures than Classics, since it's drawing on pretty much every generation; and it has definite collector's appeal with the die-cast metal and little stand things. Classics was a great filler line, but Tits have the ability to pick up where Alternators left off as the collector-oriented sub-line. The only downside is that figure quality is still pretty iffy, with each fantastic Tit like RiD Optimus or Rodimus Prime offset by a really crappy figure like the Megatrons. The overall quality is improving, but it's still pretty hit-or-miss.
