    Yes, that's what they meant.

The last, best line of defence.

Sounds like a good theory, but I'm not sure even the Wikipedia story of Cronus is accurate.

I took a Classical Mythology course a few years back and from what I remember the story went like this. Cronus feared or was told that his son would overcome him but instead of eating each child, he simply prevented them from being born. Consequently Gaia fashioned a cicle and gave it to Zeus. So the next time Cronus and Gaia were having sex, Zeus lept out, castrated Cronus, and the original Olympians escaped and banished the Titans, with the exception of Cronus who I believe was given the Eliesium Fields to rule over, where the favourites of Zeus (such as Menaleus) were to go when they died instead of into Hades. The castrated parts drifted around the world in the sea and eventually washed up on the shores of Crete (not sure of the exact location, but Crete is the first name that jumps to mind) and from the foam of the castration emerged Aphrodite. The blood that dripped from Cronus' wound gave birth to the Furies who punish blood crimes.

That's what I remember. I'll look up in my textbook to confirm.

    **edit:

Nope, you're right. I was getting that myth confused with the castration of Uranus, the father of Cronus.
