TF collecting

Ive done alot of thinking and my TF collecting. over the years it has become of a obsession than a joy for the franchise. i feel more of a slave to collecting rather than enjoying the hobby the way i once did.

i havent gotten any of the classics yet, ill probobly hold off on those for a while. I have everything domestic from BW to Cybertron (need Hightail and Shadow Recon Mini-Cons to wrap up Cybertron)

I have every Japanese release of BWII and BW Neo, although im contemplating hocking the entire run.

as far as the Titaniums go, im not heavily impressed with them i only have the 6" War Within Titaniums. im considering dropping the line altogether.

call me retarted but i want that 20th Prime movie aniversary repaint im a sucker for the mold......i want the damn MP-04 trailer too. Masterpiece Starscream is indeed a true Masterpiece. I love the hell out of him. i dont care what people say about it.

Alternators is.....or was my bread and butter but with the line ending after Ravage and Rumble and god knows what else after Rodimus will come out of the monstrosity of a concept that the kiss play line is.

money is getting very tight on my end being a single fulltime parent and a home owner. so i will probobly wrap up my TF collecting after Classics.

this year was going to be my final Botcon (see above) but having next years con at Hasbro in time for the movie got my psyched for one last hurrah, well see what happens.

anyone else feel like they have become more of a slave to the hobby rather than enjoying it for what it is??

I've got a ton of stuff, but I don't feel too enslaved by it anymore. I started with modern TFs early into Energon and went completist on the line and learned my lesson right there. Bought too many crap bots and became a little more selective. Of course there's so much good stuff coming out now that I still buy quite a lot, and I do get the occasional crappy figure (tit Megs) and sometimes a few smaller ones for no good reason (Brakedown GTS, one or two of the 3" titaniums), but overall I'm pretty happy with everything I get.

I pretty much feel the same way as Orodruin... I used to be a completist but stopped after the massive wave of recolors during the Armada era. Since then I've got from buying everything, to buing everything but recolors, to buying what I really like.

I'm even starting to dispose of boxes and cards, due to the massive space I'm saving by doing so. It was a liberating experience.

Yeah, pretty much what Hook & Orodruin said. I was a completest with Energon and Armada... I learned my lesson by the end of Energon after I looked back and realized that I personally hated half the Autobots from that series and also realized that I had moved my Armada figures to the almost lowest display point on my shelves.

Of course, with Cybertron, everything was so good that I got just about all of it sans minicons (and only because I just don't like the concept personally). So, I've still bought a lot of things and I've been a completest with Alts since the beginning and intend to be a completionist with Classics for the same reason I was with alts.

However, with 6" Tits and with the upcoming movie line... I intend to be more selective. With tits it's because I got burned with GI Joe Megatron. He looked so cool in the box that I couldn't resist, but he turned out to be a pile of poo painted to look nice. With the movie line... it's because I'm not really thrilled with where they've gone design wise, but I'm willing to give the toys a try.

The only thing I'm really nutty about still are limited edition exclusives... be them convention or Takara/E-Hobby stuff... I still spend oodles on 'em.

All in all though... I'd say that I've never felt burdened by the hobby. I'd say if you are feeling that way you should probably step back for a bit and reevaluate things. Get yourself some perspective going.

I only buy what I like and what interests me, so I dont feel like a slave to TFs. I dont bother with most of the mainline stuff which saves me alot of money as well.

Most of the time I don't feel burdened. They only time I do is when I am going through a tight money time, like now, Thankfully I sold some of my pointless triples from G1 to BBTS to pay for the Classics and my MP SS. The thing that burdens me is my obsessive self about not being able to open something unless I have two. I am a real big MIB'er and if the box can not be respectably opened without causing damage, I won't, or I will buy a double. On a different note, the new classics Prime and Megs fit into the able to open and put back in, however the two I got from BBTS had such horrendous paint applications that I snagged two more at TRU. ah well.

I too am VERY selective, The Titanium line interests me very little. They do not seem like that they are all that great. The only ones that interest me are the G1 figures that look like they are improvements over the originals, like UM, Scourge and Rodimus Prime. Those are probably the only ones I will get.

As for Classics, I intend to only get the actual Voyager and Deluxes that are new and are, To me, the real classics like Mirage, Grimlock, Ramjet etc. The minicons don't interest me, nor does the devastator repaint of Constructicon Maximus. I already have to sets of them, the US and Japanese Giftset.

So, I guess if you are feeling like it is burden, stop for a while. Take a break and reflect on why you started and what keep you going.

Deep down I'm a collector, if I have one of something then I need to have them all. I noticed however that it was way too daunting and too expensive to do so. Not to mention how many repaints there are.

To keep everything managable I started collecting smaller "groups" that interested me as a whole. I did not like all of Cybertron so I started to only collect the minicons and scouts as they appealed to me the most (the smaller the better). Of course there are a few other scattered ones, but not a complete list. For beast wars I focused on the Fuzors/mutants and the entire 10th Anniversary Line because there are only a dozen or so. You get the idea.

I also plan to get all of the classics, but only one of each mold. I don't like paying for a new paint scheme on something I already have. The task is easier and I tend to only have figures that I really like.

I once was a slave to collecting in general, even if I bought one character of a line I would fine myself wanting to get the rest, evening though i wasn't that interested in them in the first, but I wanted to complete the set so I always end up getting them. Space became a big issue and it came to a point where I wanted to focus and complete my TF collection, so I sold off about 95 % of my collection and stuck with TF's. With Transformers I'm trying to finish the lines i'm collecting with repaint and variant, I like having them in my set. 3 or 4 times a week I take some time to set up and change my display and transformer them and I really enjoy it. I dont feel I have became a slave, but over the year i have became more appereicate of the figures and take far better care of them when i first go back into collecting.
