Welcome to Transformers General Discussion Watches Transformers!​

A new blog for TGD where each week an episode from The Transformers (G1), Beast Wars, Beast Machines or Transformers: Animated will be selected for forum members to watch, blog and rate on a scale of 1-5.

Each blog entry by members will be linked on the front page of this thread with the users score displayed beside it. Users are free to use any blog style they would like including vlogs - they can be short, long, critical, nonsensical or a full blown novel!

To keep things simple, the rating system will be as follows:

1. Hated it.
2. Disliked it.
3. OK.
4. Liked it.
5. Loved it!

All multi-part episodes will be combined as a single episode and we will kick things off from where it all started with all three parts of More Than Meets The Eye from The Transformers starting Saturday, July 9th!

Episodes will be randomly drawn each week and posted on Fridays so that users can begin watching from that Saturday. The rotation of featured series will be in the order I originally blogged the shows in - The Transformers > Beast Wars > Beast Machines > Animated.

This thread is meant to spark discussion among members while allowing users to express their opinions and love for Transformers. I hope it will help bring back the feeling of Saturday Morning Cartoons as well! (No, you don't have to post your entry on Saturday but that's when I'll be posting mine!)

Please keep things civil and do not insult the opinions of other members. Users that will be posting here are from all walks of life and everyone enjoys different series in the franchise more than others. Hate of any kind will not be tolerated.

With that said, I hope we can all have fun here as we relive some of the greatest animation in cartoon history!

I remember this part. Spike has to speak out loud while writing in his journal. It's probably why he's on the cliff face. Otherwise he'd be embarrassing himself all the time.

It's clear that he doesn't know what a Decepticon emblem is yet.

I didn't really notice the scooby doo sound effects during my first run of G1.

Mirage doesn't sound like I remember either.

Soundwave has bad reach.

Gears was in the first 3 parter? I don't remember seeing him until much later. Wow, I'm bad at this man.

Isn't it a beautiful thing when a human sized Decepticon can cause catastrophic elemental catastrophe just by punching the ground?

The Jazz from animated did a damn good job with his voice acting and keeping it similar to G1's.

I wonder why Reflector never got mentioned in Beast Wars, Beast Machines or Animated. Unless he was on the ship in Beast Wars and I just never noticed him.

Hound and Spike were good buddies in these first few episodes but then Spike starts cheating on him with Bee. Sad day.

That woman had a damn manly voice when she said "thanks neighbors" lol. Assuming she said it since she was the only one waving at that time.

All the Autobots are flying and it still just feels odd. Hell, the Decepticon's flying out of jet form feels weird.

Hell yeah, here goes the energon weapon dueling. Something I genuinely missed from the other shows.

Starscream should be the head of Military. He's about as reckless as you can get. Which would be great for suicide missions.

Also, I'm not sure why but Scream isn't bugging me as much as he used too. Maybe it's because I liked Animated Starscream or maybe he doesn't get stupid annoying until later episodes.

Trailbreaker is around a lot these first two episodes. I'm surprised I forgot about him so much. There was a thread on here the other day about Trailbreaker and I don't remember my exact reply but it was something along the lines of not remembering him doing anything. >.>

The Decepticons are damn quick at setting up factory type equipment.

Skywarp is the one I was talking about last episode. The one that revived TronCon. So Skywarp is the first of all the Transformers to be revived.

"If I'm not back in five minutes, come get me." The bomb had a one minute timer lol.

Also props to Sparkplug for being brave enough to tackle a freakin' seeker.

Alrighty! Part 3 time!

And Prime's still rolling down the mountain. Didn't this episodes air once a day in the 80's? So dude was rolling for 24 hours lol.

Prime talks about Roller like he's an actual Autobot. I thought he was just a drone but I guess he's the R2-D2 of the Autobots.

This seems like it could be the end of the series already. Like, if this were a one off cartoon it could end right here as they found them.

Welp, not now.

Hell yeah Ironhide, you can take them all on at once. Bluestreak and Prowl confuse me in the show. They look the same to me.

I also forgot Skywarp could teleport.

Ironhide still tells war stories. Why do I not remember any of this!?

Man the animation on the scene with Ravage while Hound makes the Megatron hologram is all messed up.

And the only Decepticon without thumbs manages to use a key to unlock his cell.

Hell yeah! Mirage was making plays before he was my favorite. Hell, I probably didn't even know his name when I first watched this.

This dude jumped out of a crashing space ship and used a parachute to land lol.

Hell, the ending to this episode seems like it would have been a good closing point for the series as well.

Nope, spooky cliffhanger. They knew there'd be more.

Well, that's it for this three parter and it's time for a rating. For some reason, I already have a lot of nostalgia for The Transformers but I've also been spoiled by Animated. It was great seeing a lot of these characters again but all three parts of the episode felt like the same thing just repeated. So I'm going to give it a whopping...

I might join in every now and then but I'm mostly here because new CaptainSlayer blog. Even though it's all stuff you've seen and blogged before. But whatever

 

Sorry I'm late... WOW, nobody's joined in. Well, I said I would, so I shall. Apologies for how long this is. This is covering three episodes, and it's the first time I've really bothered to actually think about the G1 cartoon, and there's a lot of stuff I've never payed attention to before, though I can't promise anyone else will find anything I've written surprising.

If I were to list the best episodes of the Generations One Transformers cartoon, the opening More Than Meets the Eye three parter would not be in that list. At the same time, it wouldn't really be on a list of worst episodes, but average for this show... Well, it isn't great.

The first episode starts things off in an interesting enough manner. We're shown deep space, then a metallic planet, as a narrator tells the core concepts of all of G1 TF that was created by Marvel Comics, sans the whole "Cybertron's been blown out of its orbit" thing the comics did. The opening conflict is handled well enough, with both sides taking advantage of their different alternate forms, with the 'Cons raining down fire from the sky, while the 'Bots escape underground. The scene introduces two Autobots and actually manages to establish Bumblebee as a rookie without having someone outright say it. Wheeljack also shows the personality that he absolutely did have in the cartoon, like every fan insists, by... Errrr... Moving on

Things go downhill after the scene ends. we never see the 'Bots reach their destination, their mission is never brought up again, and the two are pushed to the background for the rest of the story. G1 was never known for its characters, but would normally have consistent focus on one or two characters for an episode. This story seems too preoccupied with introducing as many characters as possible, while moving the plot along, to actually give us a main character.

After they go searching space for energy, there's a decent battle, before they crash on Earth. Both factions lie dormant for millions of years , which makes it seem as though they were dead, until the volcano's eruption jolts the computer back online, and rebuilds Skywarp, who talks about being brought back to life. I guess even dead TF can be repaired, so there goes all the tension. I'm completely fine going with them simply being in Stasis Lock, like Beast Wars claimed, but that really isn't how it seems in the actual G1 episode.

The show is prevented from coming to a premature end by Starscream's idiocy causing the 'Bots to also get resurrected. The 'bots then lose their chance to win with a surprise attack because of Cliffjumper's idiocy. Although, at least the latter was rather amusing. Starscream, however, is just annoying from beginning to end. I know most like Chris Latta's voice for the character, but I can't stand it, though I think it's made worse by vocoding.

At the end of episode one, we're introduced to two humans who have ridiculous names, despite them not needing toys. Every human sees the giant robots and their first instinct in to attack them, unprovoked. The unprovoked part doesn't surprise me, it's that they didn't run away. There's some not very good action with the 'Bots, then Megatron flies away with the energon.

The second episode begins with the Autobots saving the humans, main one being Spike, who's old enough to work at an oil rig, and looks old enough (just) yet in the second episode, he's written as a child, easily laughing at holograms, and being stunned by the ability to disappear. Also, apparently the 'Bots didn't tell him to look out of the 'Con faction symbol, although he might just be an idiot. Prime tells him they're aliens, yet he seems to think they're from another time, for some reason. On the other hand, after he brings Soundwave into their base, he goes for a ride with Hound, and when he returns, he finds Soundwave, in plain enough site for him to spot, having been there the entire time. I guess the 'Bots are stupid, or at least blind.

The rest of the episode is just padding, as 'Cons attack a dam, leading to a lame fight. They get away with more energon, having outright victory stolen by Scream's idiocy, yet again. The Autobots go on about how they weren't built for fighting like the 'Cons, which seems rather unmotivated, since the best the 'Cons have done is distract the 'Bots while they run off. Actually complaining is Huffers one trait, which I might've remembered at the time if they put more focus on the characters. Even without that scene, there's a lot of telling us stuff, rather than showing. Rumble says Megatron is merciless, despite him constantly sparing the annoying Starscream, and Cliff saying Mirage doesn't like fighting, despite him never hesitating.

The second and third episodes really could've been cut down into one. All that really happens is the 'Cons find out about fuel, they go to steal it, the 'Bots try to stop them, and the 'Cons escape with the energon. There's an exceptionally awful fight that sees Ironhide and Bluestreak just floating about in the air, staring at each other, while an occasional missile flies past. I think MTMTE might have some of the worst fights in all of season one.

The third time the 'Cons find out about energy to plunder, there are yet more problems. This time, the 'Bots who come up with the idea to leak info are somehow shocked to hear that Prime used the plan, despite carrying it out themselves. Then when Ravage reports his findings, he plays back audio that's completely different from what he recorded. Not only is the dialog different, but it sounds like Frank Welker doing his Megatron voice or at least something similar... Maybe more like... Ravage's... growls. HOLY SHIT that was Ravage speaking English!!! I've never realized that until now.

Ahem... Moving on from that revelation of mine, I will say that I like that Megatron sees through the Autobots attempt at deception, and in turn, deceives them, living up to the Decepticon name. Heck, them managing to escape with energon in every confrontation is pretty good. Knowing how useless the 'Cons will usually be, that probably explains why Optimus is so pissed off when it seemed the 'Cons had won. It was probably the first time that had ever happened.

The final battle is pretty cool, and the 'Cons blast off with their energon, with Optimus defeated. The resolution with Mirage sneaking on board was kind of a cop-out, as there was no indication he'd done that, and he'd only gotten one other scene of note in the entire story. Then they tell us about how he apparently really wanted to go home, and I think about how cool it'd have been if he had gotten his comic characterization. Then we find out that all of Earth's governments have given the 'Bots enough of our dwindling resources to revitalize the entire planet Cybertron. I guess that explains where it all went. Also, it sure was lucky for them that our governments don't blame the 'bots for bringing their war to our world.

So overall, the story is rather padded out, the character get even less personality than what would be usual for the show, the action was mixed, but the 'Cons were usually competent, for the most part. It's not the worst of the G1 cartoon, but it not the best, either.

Edit: Completely forgot to rate it. I'll give it a 3. It was OK.

Flying bots - I'm glad they were grounded after this, added dimension to the bot vs cons scenario, but then again I do have rose tinted specs for G1.

My first exposure to this was on VHS, and it was called 'Arrival from Cybertron' here in Blighty. I've still got it somewhere too.

I'd have liked to have seen the 1984 take on cybertronian modes of Optimus and Jazz.

Does start to build up to the relief of when scream does become boots.

Just love the bots encircling the base at the end and the big battle. These episodes really take me back to being a child.

2. First TF show I watched as it was airing.
3. It's the only show of the four I have on DVD in full.

Grimlock, absolutely! I don't expect everyone to do every episode! I want people to chime in when they want too and I want everyone to understand they don't have to do a full blog entry "it rocks 5/5" is perfectly acceptable! It's all for fun

I was trying to figure out what I could bring to something like this. Hopefully I did so.

More Than Meets the Eye 3-part miniseries
Feralstorm's rating: 4 outta 5 - a great into to the series and the TF world, with some of the best animation from the show, but a little heavy on the 1950s sci-fi cheese that didn't carry over so much to the rest of the show.

Things I learned from MTMTE:

. Victor Caroli should be crowned king of all narration
. Apparently Laserbeak's earth mode is the bird, not the tape cassette.
. Megatron's a confident guy, knowing Cybertron "must exist" going on no info at all.
. Starscream is the exact opposite of a sneaky usurper.
. Cliffjumper can pull giant sniper rifles out of his ass.
. the detailed transformation animations of the 'roll call' are magic to watch.
. Starscream's Null Ray can ice things over - never noticed that before (or since?)
. Humans are surprisingly calm about giant robot attacks, and getting caught in the middle of a hellish disaster.
. Hound is obviously Spike's pre-Bumblebee bud.
. Decepticons like to do everything at sunrise.
. If you have a kewl fight on a dam, the weapons you only use that one time will be recreated and homaged over and over.
. Ruby crystals are loaded with energy.
. Starscream screws up, frequently and consistently.
. Never assume that the blast that didn't kill any of your guys killed all the bad guys.
. Skywarp needs permission to teleport.
. Optimus Prime would make a 'neat' president - now more than ever.
. Ravage speaks (in tape mode only?)
. Mirage will save the day, so why does no one send him cloaked into the middle of the 'con base with a bunch of bombs?
. Everything will be fixed and all problems solved - until your cartoon series is picked up for more episodes.
