What's the closest thing to the 1986 movie?

Spaceballs is a Star Wars parody.

But, yeah, Transformers: The Movie is Star WArs without C3-P0 and R2-D2. Hot Rod is Luke, Optimus is Obi Won, Springer is Han, Arcee is a better Leia, Kup is Chewbacca. Unicron is the Deathstar. Megatron/ Galvatron is Vader (he's the bad guy that the mentor had dealings with the the new hero has to face). Some thing font fit like the Junkions or the Quintessons but it barrow a lot of it's story beats for Star Wars and get's its tone from things like Heavy Metal.

This, pretty much. It covers the major beats with only some slight reconfiguration and re-arranging, including (but not limited to):
* The bad guys are led by a formerly-powerful warrior rebuilt into a glorified lackey.
* The major threat is a big-^$$ death machine disguised as a planetary body.

* The hero watches a beloved mentor-figure get struck down but later hears the mentor-figure's voice encouraging him from beyond.
* The good guys at one point end up in a watery pit where they're menaced by some grotesque creature(s).
* Thanks (to varying degrees) to the whatsit of ultimate salvation and the aforementioned encouragement of his mentor-figure from beyond, the hero is able to blast the big-^$$ death machine to oblivion in the end before it can rack up another notch on its belt of destroyed planets.
* And the formerly-powerful warrior-turned-glorified-lackey is ultimately sent tumbling head over heels into deep space.

And that's not counting truly superficial stuff like the one chick among the good guys having buns on both sides of her head, or even outright stealing half the sound FX, or the one version of TFTM that even lifts SW's stylistic opening crawl.

I think "borrows a lot from Star Wars" undersells it a bit. Starchaser is perhaps the most blatant Star Wars ripoff in a decade of Star Wars rip offs. It surpasses even Message From Space and Battle Beyond the Stars in how closely it hews to Star Wars plot elements. I mean at least Battle Beyond the Stars was also ripping off a different Kurosawa movie then the one Star Wars did. And Message From Space was and is batshit insane in every way possible. So any direct Star Wars rip offs might have been the deranged visions of a raving madman clawing desperately for an anchor to what was then reality. Put another way Starchaser was more of a Star Wars cartoon ripoff than the Star Wars cartoon featured in the Star Wars Holiday Special.

As blatant as it was, I think to write StarCrash off as just a ripoff of Star Wars is unfair to Barbarella.

FOR ME!!!It had the same lasting effect and tone as Empire Strikes Back.

I know I may get clowned for that but thats was the type of excitement I had.

* The bad guys insinuate themselves upon the good guys' ships twice throughout the movie.
* The hero and the villain face each other aboard the big-^$$ death machine in close-quarters combat even as it transforms into robot mode to destroy the aforementioned planet.
* In escaping the bad guys' second assault on them in space, the good guys get stranded on a world where they find unlikely allies who ultimately help get them on their way again.
* Again, the good guys have to go into enemy territory in what is essentially a rescue mission.
* Again, the hero hears the mentor-figure's voice encouraging him from beyond.
* And again, encouraged by his mentor's words from beyond, the hero uses the whatsit of ultimate salvation to blow the big-^$$ death machine to smithereens and save the planet.
* The One Chick (Vespa/Arcee) has an irritating tag-along (Dot/Daniel).
* The villain gets tormented (to some extent) by a much-bigger bully who has a beard.
* There's rock music, profanity, and even a scene where a guy's chest is opened and something comes out.
*Oh, yeah, on that note, Optimus Prime appears in both movies.

While it's definitely not the closest thing to the 1986 movie, Project A-Ko (anime movie) comes to mind. The action, style, and 80s synth music, nonsensical plot, I love it. The first A-Ko movie is the best one.

It was also released in Japanese theatres in 1986. A fantasy-parody film that references several series like Macross, Fist of the North Star and Gundam.
