My guess would be just the scenario of the plot - the formula of Bots v Cons on Earth has always been in every series (initially at least) but G1 is the only one where the Great War only spills over onto Earth by complete accident when the mangled hulls of The Ark and The Nemesis end up throwing everybody into a trajectory toward future Mt. St. Hillary, leaving both sides as being marooned and operating out of shipwrecks.

So, essentially, I'd say just having the set-up for G1 basics - same characters (but new designs), same locations ala Ark and whatever the Not-Nemesis was - is what should be done, but scrap any inclination of simply reusing the old plots (half of them probably can't be used anyway because of period stereotypes like Carabombya) by starting fresh.

We've had a lot of series that essentially retread G1. Maybe not with the exact same character designs and episodes, but really really close. (TF Animated in particular borrowed characters, designs, and plots from G1 like wow.)

So in that sense, obviously it can and has worked.

An even more literal retread of G1 would probably work too, but what would be the point? The G1 episodes already exist so . . . we can just watch those.

Totally agree. G1 is also the only series to wage the war over Earths natural resources. They came from a dying world and found an abundance of energy..... only, mankind needs it too to survive. In almost every other series, there's no real reason for the war to be waged here.

Same reason a modern 8 year old likes Ninja Turtles, Batman, Spider-Man, the Avengers, etc.

Oh, come now...surely you can get behind the premise of the Autobots and Decepticons coming to Earth to fight over Every Lost Cybertronian Whatsit In The History Of The Planet's Creation Ever???

Seriously, though, I agree. Personally, I like the notion of the Autobots and Decepticons having to abandon Cybertron completely because the war has made it impossible for anything to survive there, with the Decepticons deciding that Earth with all its natural energy sources would make a great replacement world with a little...modification. It's simple, to-the-point, capable of generating all sorts of requisite action and drama without resorting to the MacGuffin Of The Week, and who gives a **** if it's been "done to death" when pretty much everything in the entire franchise by this point has been done to death? I don't think it'd be that problematic a change of focus, frankly.

I always liked the fact that they were stranded here on Earth and many wanted to go home but couldn't.

This, too. It gave them personality beyond the usual tropes of either going along with the big plan, or arguing with their teammates.

I think Hasbro is giving us this in the form in of the Prime Wars trilogy, which is what I had in mind all along. Now I just hope the cartoon is good, and goes beyond Combiner Wars.

This would make the most sense to me . It almost could be an ultimate cast kinda of thing . You could have s1 and s2 bots as well as a bunch of season 3 guys too . Place a bunch of guys from these years that never got screen time or ver little ie road buster, whirl , runabout runamuck

This is a big concerns in Japan where TakaraTomy (under the management of Tomiyama family... descendants of the original Tomy founder) decided to 'americanize' an entire G1 story (Convoy to Optimus Prime, Bumble with bee Cybertron no longer a faction name.... And Autobots aren't just a subgroups) ... or some portions of it starting from TF United ... (With G1 Masterpiece retains its Japanese names and factions) .... But since the inceptions of Unite Warriors line (Mirror to Hasbro TF Combiner Wars). the consistency of this policy became dubious... while Hasbro clearly intended to market CW to early teens, TakaraTomy appears to treat this as Masterpiece (but not branded as such) and thus marketed UW to the older G1 fans so everyone released as Unite Warriors still uses Japanese names --Look at UW 'Aerialbots'/ Superion! Both American names and the localized ones were used side by side... Air Raid and Slingshot are written in Japanese as Air Rider and Sling respectively. (Also AFAIK, no UW versions of Optimus Prime shown up YET... (while Japanese reviewers began to call (Imported) CW Optimus prime with shortened American name.... but Decepticon Drag Strip (??) that comes with his packaging is called Drag Stripe) or never will it be? because in Japan. CW Optimus has been reconfigured to make Grand Scourge instead) ...It's up to TakaraTomy execs if there will be G1 Animated series reboots whether to use Localized name or Americanize all.

EDIT: Googling results of Unite Warriors Optimus Prime yielded this

    UW05 ????????????: ????????????

He's called Convoy (single unit), His teammates are called 'The Autobots' (yep. in Japanese original G1 sense... where this term means those who were Diaclone Car Robots). his subordinates are
    - Prowl
    - Ironhide
    - Sunstreaker
    - Ligier (Actually retool+redeco of UW Dragstripe.. Combiner teams aren't supposed to consists of members came from different-warring factions.. y'know)
When combined.. he's now called 'Convoy Grand Prime'... yes! Bridging America an Japan seamlessly!
Oddly enough the Japanese UW adheres to comics better than Americans do Optimus Maximus (G1) - Transformers Wiki

This is precisely why I don't like IDW! All of the fun and campy charm of the original G1 is missing. While IDW has its own appeal to its fans, it doesn't work for me at all. (I might like it better if it wasn't supposed to be "G1", since I love most of the TF franchises for their own merits. But both Hasbro and IDW insist it is, so for me it falls massively short of the mark.)

That's why the only modern G1 cartoon I'd be interested in would be a faithful adaptation of the Marvel/Marvel UK comics. Rather than trying to reinvent the magic, just add animation to previously unanimated G1 stories.

This is something I'd love to see, but I don't think it'd be popular enough to warrant an entire series.

What I would like to see though is something like a series of DTV adaptations of the most popular stories. Who wouldn't want to see something like Target: 2006 animated?

Eh, I don't know that just straight-up adaptations of Marvel stories would be necessary myself, but using the basic framework of Marvel's story arcs wouldn't be a bad idea...it'd be a fresh change, for example, to see a TF cartoon that for once depicts a relationship between Autobots and humans in general that isn't so chummy (even PRIME dropped the ball on this, for my money, and that was a show that had a terrorist group running afoul of the 'Bots).

Well we are in a way getting exactly that in the form of Combiner Wars from Macinema so I think so far we're good on that. However I do like to see a series that bridges the gap between G1 and BW.

It really amazes me that they don't try this more often to bridge the gap.
