The "side vent holes" are purely cosmetic. If you look closely, you'll see the outer stacks are thicker----they have an additional layer of metal wrapped around the muffler (that's where it is on a semi, where the holes are), and that layer of metal (muffler guard) is spaced a little ways away from the muffler---it's so you don't burn yourself by touching a hot muffler directly. Same as on a motorcycle. It's simply a grate to keep you away from the muffler. Some are solid, some have the manufacturer's name or logo, but most simply have the pattern of slotted holes seen here.

So, the other/inner ones may either lack mufflers and not need the guards because of that , or perhaps since they are not at the edges of the bunk, you're less likely to come into contact with them even if they do have mufflers.

Firstly, I'm sorry for resurrecting this old thread.
Secondly, the last time I saw this Optimus in Auburn, WA, was on October 17th, 2015. I remember that clearly, because our house got broken into the day before. No Transformers were stolen during this robbery, except for my Blu-Ray movies (SE) 1, 2 & 3.
Thirdly, I've been away for a while, but with news brewing about The Last Knight, I should be hanging around more nowadays!

    Very cool.

It's still such an awesome-looking truck.

Sorry to hear about the robbery, friend. Good to hear you'll be hanging around.

Thanks, pal! I appreciate that :)  --and agreed, it is a sweet looking truck . . . I wonder if he'll ever be a truck again, since he's gone to space at the end of AOE.
