What did you do between G1 and G2 if you were a fan in America back then?

There was a two year gap with no guarantee that Transformers would return.

Did you give up on the toyline or wait to see if it returned?

    Teenage Mutant ninja turtles.

I didn't give up on the toy line. I was like 6 when it initially went away. I did have a lot of my actionmasters fight with the turtles to stop the evil forces of Megatron and shredder.

I was into comics during that time. In fact, I didn't go full tilt back into Transformers until 1993/94.

I wasn't a toy collector then. My Transformer prorities were the cartoon, then the comic. So it didn't make a big difference to me once the show and comic ended.

In that time I kept playing and drawing Transformers. Also, the last toys still remained on the store shelves for some time. They prolly weren't as aggressive in shelf space turnover back then.

Sometime later I heard Megatron appeared in a gijoe comic, and I was excited for this and the G2 toys I later saw.

I was collecting back issues of the Marvel G1 and finding old G1 toys at thrift stores. I was huge into Transformers while they were gone, and as a result I got a lot of criticism from my peers in school for liking some outdated relic. When G2 came about, I was ecstatic that the Transformers were back.

Same here. I was still getting the new Transformers toys through 1988. And then after that it was all about Batman and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

    Isn't Dating & Driving a felony? :ev:

    I guess you were spared!
I'm actually greatful for being around before Transformers. Gave me a true appreciation for them.
And when I 1st saw the animated Transformers commercial "coming soon to Marvel comics", I had the epiphany that it was the greatest thing I had ever seen on television.

I noticed that some of the people in my school were of the other gender. I was vaguely aware that there even was a Generation 2 toy line. (Truthfully, I had already begun turning away when the shift went from Diecast toys that turned into vehicles that I was familiar with to all-plastic robots that turned into ridiculous looking space vehicles or monsters or didn't even transform at all.)

    Oh, those ActionMasters.
The controversial Transformers who don't Transform.

Matrix, how could Hasbro think that was a good idea for a toy line called "Transformers" ???

Yes and no. The poseability of the original characters was very restricted due to design and manufacture limitations of the age. This was an attempt to bridge that gap.

Some turned out to be, yes.

It wasn't that bad… I scouted for Micromasters and Action Masters in bargain bins for a while, completed my US comic collection and started looking for the UK comics. I had many episodes on videotape and was able to locate the occasional G1 toy loose. In retrospect, it was fun having to work for it for a while.
