So my son "inherited" my Guide to the Transformers (from right before DreamWave folded, good reference book non-the less) And pretty much read the covers off.

I've given him a few of my transformers and got him into Rescue Bots, (trying to avoid the movies, for their violence and,,, well,,, sucking)

Well we were at the public library a few weeks ago and they had,,, G1 Season 1 DVD.

Yeah,,,,, pretty much burnt out the motor on the DVD player with that.

(I swear honey, I had nothing to do with his TF addiction!)

He spent a week "being" Ravage, (the Pre-school loved that! ) the pinnacle of that being him jumping onto my chest so I could be "Soundwave".

But watching old TF cartoons I've noticed things I hadn't given much though to in years (other than being a GEEWON booster on these pages)

1.) Spike is either stupid or lucky, but damn if the kid ain't brave.
2.) I'd forgotten how awesome the father-son dynamic of Sparkplug/Spike was, my own father was not around, but it seems like I've become more like Sparkplug as a father.
3.) Shockwave appears in the FIRST episode! With TWO hands even! (I'd forgotten that.)
4.) The Autobots tried to show off their different personalities, even if they only had one or two lines of dialog in the episodes they appeared in. The Technobabble is horrible in retrospect, but trying to give 20 something characters unique personalities in a kids show was pretty ambitious.

So now that I've ruined my kid for life (LOL) My wife has TWO transfans in the house!

He's got a head start on me for sure. The earliest Diaclones came over around 1982 at the best. I might have had some other "non-transformers" robot toys that early and of course Star Wars droids, but that still puts me at about 8,,, maybe 7 if we're generous.

He's doing RiD Bumbebee at 4!

Yeah, my kids also get a kick out of G1! They would ask me the names of the various characters, then run to my collection and try to find the character.

It's always great to watch them enjoy a series (especially Transformers), that meant so much to you, you guys will always have that bond throughout his life---even if he takes a break from TF's.

Wonderful for both of you!!!!!! :thumb

G1 had it's flaws, but it wasfun. Each episode you wanted to see what was going to happen, what fantastic local they'd be going to, and who would be important.

Heck I caught stuff rewatching the show.
And while I'm sure it was unintentional, the episode "The Secret of Omega Supreme" makes "The Core"s plot make more sense. The Autobots reprogramming the Constructacons makes more sense when you know they had already been reprogrammed by Megatron. The Autobots were hoping to restore their original personalities. And then "The Core" explains how the Autobots were able to reverse engineer combiner tech for Superion.

This is one of the coolest things I have read on TFW!

G1 was a fun show, watching as a kid it seemed more realistic back then.
    I like your points here!

    That's awesome!!!!

Now balance things off, and make a daughter so she can be into Barbie...or MLP....or whatever your wife was into back in the day.

It was realistic...they used real cars and trucks that can be seen on the roads at the time.

Yea, to a degree, and that was what I liked about it. But many of the stories and "science" of the show were pretty wacky. I do still love the first 3 part origin cartoon - even as an adult!

Watched a few episodes of transformers prime with my nephew since I got him into transformers but haven't showed him the original show. One reason is because he asks so many questions so so many questions. Still its quite fun to have a younger part of the family into the same things as you. :D

I wonder if there was a G1 based show today, it would be made with the more modern conceit of storytelling (foreshadowing coming developments, smaller cast, more coherent characterizations) would it work with all the fandom, or just fans in their 30's who grew up in the 1980's? (I know the groupings of the fanbase on the board, it's G1, Beast Era, Unicron Trilogy, Animated, and Live Action……..and we all tend to react at times poorly to the smallest things, like say Botcon Seekers, Elbows on Constructicons, Minicons, trucks and monkeys, etc)

Good stuff, man. I was lucky to grow up in the '80's. Magical times and G1 was truly lightning in a bottle. So great that we have G1 DVDs, comic book reprints, some great G1 inspired toy lines (especially Masterpiece), and being a father with kids interested in TFs it's like having a shot at a second childhood. My son's 22 months but he's already pretty nuts about TFs with his one step changers, Rescue Bots, my G1 DVDs and MP collection. Bonding with your kids over this stuff is priceless.

My son is 5 and I've been tempted to show him G1, but hesitant due to the violence and guns. He loves Rescue Bots and he loves playing around with my Transformers. I know I can't show him the G1 movie, he's just really too sensitive for it, it would break his heart to see Optimus die.

G1 isn't really that violent actually.

No humans ever get hurt (laughably so) and everyone went to Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy. Any TF that takes a hit gets fixed by the end of the ep.

Just avoid the movie, you should be fine.

(My brother took my nephew to the Bay movies, at the same age. He's noticably more destructive. Breaks all of his toys. Likes to hit and wrestle. Disturbing)
