Hello my friends, I would like to buy the entire G1 show on dvd/bluray. I know there are various editions but I would like you to tell me what edition is the best buy and why.
Also, I'm italian and even if I talk and understand english, I would like an edition that has good english subtitles to see it with some friends... And, if does exist, an edition that includes *also* the italian audio track would be an awesome bonus.

Don't know if I'm asking too much... :)

I fell in love again with transformers just since a couple of months after having loved them so much as a child... so I'm a bit uninformed of what happened during the last 25 years :)

All I know of are the Rhino release and the Shout! Factory release. I have the Shout! Factory release but I think it's English only, no subtitles.

I believe this is the best, collecting every episode remastered, and it's the newest release. Can't help you in terms of subtitles or dubs, I don't actually own that one and I believe mine was only released in Australia and New Zealand years ago. There's also a remastered DVD release around the same time and unlike the cartoon, the 86 film is also available on blu ray.
EDIT: then again, it's not mentioned on tfwiki, maybe the one I just suggested was Australian only too?

Wait, WHA...?!!! Why've I never heard of this? Is this for markets outside of the US or something? I have the Shout Factory releases and thought those were the most recent G1 DVDs. Am I wrong? I don't see this on Amazon. Please tell me more!

Transformers Generation One Remastered Season 1 Collection
They've also released the various Japanese series in boxes matching the individually released seasons of G1. However I've since noticed it's by Madman, an Australian company. Here's the Japanese link-
http://www.madman.com.au/series/home/14877/transformers-japan-g1-headmasters-masterforce-victory which has a complete set, although finding these links are the first I've heard of that.
They may even be the cause of the Unicron Trilogy box sets and the Prime S1 in the same style box as the white and red packaging I think they're doing for combiner wars, I assumed there was at least a similar US release but apparently not.

Japan is releasing Blu-Rays of the series "this winter".

Those would presumably be the best from a visual standpoint.

Thanks for the info! So this is not a US release? Wonder if it's the same quality as the last Shout Factory releases? Would these play on a US DVD player?

They're advertised as only working on Region 4 machines and they are PAL, but I've got a player that plays any region DVDs and I once bought a Doctor Who box set advertised as region 2 by the seller and the BBC only for it to be 2+4, Blu rays are usually less restrictive, half the amount of regions and many not bothering to lock them anymore apparently. But yes, didn't realise at first but apparently not a US release.

Hope a western release follows or has an english dub, would prefer blu rays and was planning to have a second copy for reasons.

    Thanks for the info!

Yeah, I'd kill for these on blu ray but I don't think that'll happen in the US. I just want a US blu ray release of The Movie. I'm hoping they'll wise up and we'll get it in time for the 30th.

Yes I do know... but I'm talking about subtitles, I'm italian and I understand ENG but not everyone in my family understand spoken english so well and some subs always help that kind of things :)

    Such a shame :(

oh man, it would be nice to get all the languages in one. I buy that in a heartbeat.

Imagine watching the entire series with Nona Carmela.

Try looking for the company that dubbed the cartoons in Italian then maybe look to see if they released it.

If there are no English subs included, you can probably do the subtitles yourself. Take the Japanese cartoons which are subbed in English then enter them in your own version using the Italian cartoons.

There are many site tutorials on how to transfer subtitles.

The problem is the unique dvd release we have of this cartoon here in italy is incomplete and made with masters from the rhino edition...
