Actually the Rescue Bots Monster Truck Optimus would be something I'd be down with if it was Voyager sized with good articulation.

I remember one quote musing on whether he'd make a good school bus.

So um, yeah, OP for school bus next time.

That was such a cool alt mode.

Considering how Primes are chosen by Primus and stuff, they're almost...magical.

    :D

    Eh?

The truck thing works for Optimus because it gives him the requisite size but it also indicates he's not a born killer, which is what a military vehicle suggests. He's being forced into combat. And that creates a sort of rootability that's very attractive in a protagonist.

Also a school bus would make him yellow. Then he would be Sinestro Corps Optimus, and even though the toys aren't really my bag, I would treasure that figure forever.

But it doesn't mean that I can't appreciate Optimus Prime and Megatron. What is with "fans" always wanting to change everything for the sake of change? There's something about the original designs/concepts that worked. Change them enough and you're liable to end up with something that doesn't.

And this is exactly why Prime needs to stay a truck. Megs' alt mode ADD isn't a feature, it's a bug. There's no real consistency there, and it often leads to Megs being some sort of nondescript alien "space cruiser" because the character has no identity alt-mode wise.

To be fair Megatron's original G1 altmode was pretty silly so it makes sense his alt mode change every now and then. Also he's also been a tank in current years as well as a truck not just an alien jet.

I'd say there's consistency, just with whatever universe Megatron is operating in.

My favorite is probably hobo-truck and the osprey.

Megatron's original alt mode makes no sense nowadays. The only reason he turned into a gun is because he was the only toy from the original line that could be seen as the bad guy's leader by 1980's standards because guns are bad. Much more worse than a fighter jet which can blow up an entire village of innocents. But I digress.

It absolutely counts. The thread title says Optimus...and that's it. Optimus Primal is for all intents and purposes a successor to Optimus Prime.

With that said, Optimus Primal has been represented as a bat, an ape-bot on a hoverboard, a jet-thing + funky road vehicle, and finally a zen gorilla-bot with a more human-looking robot mode.
