My hasbro soundwave was ruined by chrome wear and stress marks out of the box with the cassettes. Considering I handled the takara counterparts many many times almost a year before both hasbro cassettes and sound wave himself, with zero chrome wear and stress marks, that is complete bullshit for a newer figure. I haven't even touched the bot mode of the hasbro soundwave and it looks like he had a run in with sandpaper on his chrome bits...

I've had my hands on each of the hasbro masterpiece releases and have had to return at least one of each iteration due to some sort of fatal qc. I actually stopped collecting due to the hasbro grim and hot rod nonsense... When I got back and was picking up MP10 there was a board member actually returning one lol. I even had to return a YOTH one due to broken and stripped screws on his feet and left thigh out of the box... :(

Not sure where your going with the aesthetic changes nonsense when we are talking about quality. No matter what the price or whatever paint changes there needs to be a basic standard met. I should not have to return a figure that I harassed TRU employees so much for lol.

Its a possibility they make a same number of figures per run as they do with takara. Maybe even slightly more due to the demand and the size of the region. It's possible they make one huge run and keep the good stuff for the Japanese market and we are getting rejects... Considering the hoops you have to jump through to find these hasbro releases and how rare hasbro mps seem to be, its a stinking pile of horseshit to have to return one you find due to qc. They could have had at least one run already of the figure so there should be better qc and less mistakes no matter what the price. If there are mistakes don't box them up and send them to the consumers...

I don't find it ok or never will to have to fix things out of the box no matter what the product. I will gladly fix anything I break or I cause. If not, hell no. Considering 08 just had a reissue and supposedly the hasbro edition is newer, there is no excuse for this shit (assuming they are using the same factories and molds). The reissue is actually sitting on my desk and has zero problems still after multiple transformations and even after my dog got at it... This NIB Hasbro Grimlock is just fucking unacceptable.

    ----

Considering I usually buy multiples and keep the best figure, I'm fully aware of takara's qc problems so they aren't immune as I've also complained about them before, especially I'm my FS threads... Even so, I've had only one instance where I actually wanted to return a takara figure. Let's not make up bs and attribute it to others. Maybe that is just how people totally act in their own shitholes? If so, please keep that nonsense there. :lol

Just got my MP-03 Grimlock today. I can not believe how floppy he is. I read the reviews, I was ready for some floppiness, but my goodness, this is just crazy. He can barely stand still without falling backwards. And its not just floppy. The rotational joints in the biceps and the upper thighs are just ridiculously loose. They will spin if you look at them the wrong way.

I do like the green tinted transparent plastic over the original smokey tint. The details just seem to pop in the new version.

Do not like that the back wings are now kinda see through. I guess I have to start looking into this Future Floor Polish stuff. Gotta fix this hot mess.

The future floor polish trick makes a night and day difference. It will feel like a different figure after you apply it. Walmart carries it for $6.49

Finally got me a mp grimlock. This figure is cool. It my first mp grimlock and I don't own any previous versions. The grey plastic looks fine to me and the yellow greenish clear plastic isn't as bad as I thought. Besides the usual loose hips this figure is solid.

I just opened up my Asia exclusive MP Grimlock today after receiving it in late 2013. His legs are pretty loose. I feel that he'll do the splits if I just leave him there for a bit standing. Anyone have a fix for this? I have future floor polish but thats for ball joints only right? How would I apply future to his legs and hand?

I have the Hasbro release from 2010 and it is nothing like the MP-03 version this thread is about. What the hell happened? Sorry to hear about your experiences. It's a shame that a stellar mold got a less than stellar release years later.

I have that same release, too, the one with the weird white box, right? My legs are very floppy yet he still manages to hold some pretty dynamic poses. It just makes him less fun to handle. Still looks beautiful, though. I have him in dino mode the majority of the time anyway, as that's how I usually think of him from the cartoon (especially from the movie forward) and he has no stability issues there.

Btw, I didn't realize it for a few weeks after opening him, but his kibble wings spread out. More toon accurate and makes him look bigger. Didn't realize he had a waist swivel for a while, too. Made my day when I found out!

Oops actually mines isn't the AE exclusive. It's this one with the flamesword and crown. So I did apply future floor polish to the legs and they do seem more stable now.

I had the TRU MP-08 and now I have the white box Asia exclusive version with calligraphy on the front. Other than minor differences in paint apps and plastic tint I can't find any difference in quality from the older release.

Aside from the differences you mentioned, the Asia exclusive edition has the sharp TT teeth and claws. It's basically a floppy TT Grimlock with a weird box, no TT waiter gear or helmet, and the Hasbro crown. I ended up picking up a TT Grimlock box and the TT accessories second hand.

    Very helpful - thank you!

I am seeing some missing chest emblems in the pics. Safe to assume that the broken one on mine is a recurring issue?

I haven't heard of them actually breaking. They are definitely known for being finicky if you don't slide the chest into place just so.

Comparisons between the 3 Masterpiece Grimlocks

I was very curious about the fact that Hasbro released Masterpiece Grimlock 3 times and see if there are any differences. What if someone has a loose Masterpiece Grimlock and you did not know which version it was? Well here is a handy pictoral guide to the differences.

To recap, Masterpiece Grimlock was first released in the USA in 2009 in Toys R Us. I will call this version 2009. The second release was in Cyberton Con 2013 in Singapore. It is still available on BBTS here. The third release was MP-03 in 2014 in Toys R Us again.
In these pictures I placed the versions in the following order from left to right and top to bottom: 2009, 2013, and 2014.
The 2009 is the most distinct version with the bright gold on the feet claws, the black outlines on the hip panels, and the brighter gold painted robot toes.
2013 has more pale gold paint on the metal robot claws and gray painted robot toes.
2014 uses a lighter shade of gold to paint the toes than the 2009, but less pale than the 2013. It is very close to the 2013 but the shade of gold chrome used is different.
Because the 2013 and 2014 are so similar, it is very difficult to tell them apart. the gold chrome color is not the same.

In this picture, I did not remove the clear plastic tab that prevents the batteries form being used. The 2013 is the only version with Japanese text actually tampoed on the battery compartment. I do not have the Takara MP-08 version, but it may be the same.

The color of the metal feet claws differ and not much else in alt mode. The differences in chrome are difficult to distinguish.

Here you cans see the base of the tail where the robot toes form in the back. The gold paint on the 2009 is the most obvious difference compared to the gray 2013 and 2014

    Accessories

The accessories are actually different. The red chrome on the swords are not applied the same. Unless you see it in person, it is difficult to tell them apart.
The 2013 sword is more pointy than the others, indicating it came from the Takara version of the mold. The 2014 clear plastic is more tinted yellowish than clear.
In my 2014 version, the clear gun barrels have air bubbles and is more tinted yellowish, otherwise, the guns are the same color.
Another indication of the mold differences, the 2013 crown has pointer edges than the others, coming from the Takara release. In my version, the 2014 has some mold imperfection where the seam is exposed, creating a ridge where the mold halves come together.
The differences are so minor that most people would not care at all. However, once you know the differences, you can make an informed purchase rather than buying one based on price alone because you would not be buying the exact same figure. My favorite is the 2013 Cybertron Con one. It is the most expensive, but seems to have the best quality. It uses the pointier collector oriented accessories. The gold is more pale, making it more subtle. What is your favorite?
