A couple people have asked me if I would do a pictorial review of this set. So here goes.



First up, Star Convoy, (reissue) He comes with a Micromaster Hot Rod. and is a long nosed semi. The treads on the trailer are motorized and can go forward or reverse. the back of the trailer can hold two Microtrailers, and the yellow buttons on top will activate their Micromaster launching feature. Other than that, not a lot going on with this mode



Bot mode is big, the arms have an elbow and shoulder joint, and the treads can make him "walk"



Base mode is pretty cool, the Microtrailers are made into a garage type side to it, the other side, the treads make moving sidewalks, and the turret that Hot Rod is manning rotates. the back ramps kind of launch the micromasters on it down the hill and there's a little room in his chest area



The treads can be detached from him to become Roller



Next is Sky Garry, his jet mode can pick up and drop up to three Microtrailers at a time. He comes packaged with Shotbomber, a small missile truck Micromaster



His Bot mode has shoulder articulation, and a couple more joints in the arms



His Base mode is a giant tower with a couple gun emplacements up it, the bottom can have up to three Microtrailers as small addons to it.



Last is Grandus. He's commonly referred to as the epidome of G1 Brickishness, He comes packaged with Spinner, one of the best looking Micromasters IMO. his vehicle mode is basically him on his belly with some transformation to make him sit flatter and add to the flight deck, he packs a lot of guns though, and this mode is very versatile, but more on that later



Bot mode has shoulder articulation, the guns carry over to this mode as well as part of the flight deck becoming a shield for his arm



Base mode is where Grandus really shines though, there is a wheel on his back that makes the radars spin and the elevator go up and down, the small yellow piece in the middle is a Micromaster launcher, repair arms on one of the levels, the small white door in the lower back is a docking station for a Microtrailer, and the shield becomes a Helipad for the top of the base. There is also a port on the back of him to attach an adapter from Star Convoy's Roller, to make the elevator and radars work with the motor

Combined with Sky Garry, as per the instructions, he looks great, couldn't fit all three in their base modes in the light box as Star Convoy is huge, also, you can see the Microtrailer docked on Grandus in this pic



The three of them combine into "Triple Combination Battlestar Attack", which makes Grandus into a second trailer for Star Convoy with Sky Garry on top, not really a combination in the traditional sense, but it's still a cool play feature, i would have loved to have this set as a kid



There's also a few other combinations for him

With Dai Atlas



With Metroplex, which is probably the most combined he gets, the posts on his shoulders peg into metroplex's fist holes very securely



and just for fun since he's a repaint of Metroplex, Metrotitan comes out



I'm very pleased with this set since i love Micromasters, and i'm unconcerned about poseability. the base mode is the biggest Micromaster set. even Big Powered isn't as big in base mode.

a cool set, with a few neat surprises for me.

One aspect that always amused me is how Star Convoy pretty much "splays down" into base mode, his legs become platforms and his chest opens up and so forth, with his upper torso right there in plain view. It's kind of like he's melting and the Micromasters are rejoicing his demise.

Just in case anyone didn't noticed, the basic design template for star convoy is the same as the Brave leaders such as Might Gaine & J-decker. They have similar transformation & Might Gaine is motorized too.

For those familiar with the Brave series, for sure would agree with me.

 

It's very cool to see these together. I've always wanted a Sky Garry and a Grandus. I couldn't care less about their lack of articulation, or any other G1 figure for that matter. They're all nice. Great photos as always as well  

 

Excellent photos! I love the play pattern and I've always wanted these guys. Especially that Micromaster hot rod. Def gonna have to try and get my hands on at least star convoy one of these days.

 

Isn't there a Grandus/Star Convoy base combination where SC's tractor unit powers Grandus' lifts etc?

thanks for the comments, might do some other japanese exclusives later, any suggestions? Big Powered is already in the works, but want to wait until at least drillbuster arrives so all six of the bots are in hand

it's mentioned in the review, just not possible to get them all in the light box at the same time   the combined base is close to three feet   maybe later i will get ambitious and make a makeshift "oversize" light box for shots like that

For anyone interested in Skygarry, the Brave version called Deathgarrygun can be had for an amazingly low price at BBTS.
It's not quite as pretty as Skygarry since its just red, but it's still an absolute steal at $24.

Not a bad idea since Skygarry only comes with one of the microtrailers but can hold three! The little rubber bots are pretty cool, too.
