I submitted another long-winded babble-thon review for Megatron (similar to the one I did for Prime) but I thought I'd do another mini-review, in case anyone's curious. He's not as close to perfection as Prime, but he certainly has his merits. In robot mode he stands at about 10 inches tall. BTW, I like the trend of packaging the leader and supreme-sized toys in robot mode, like Takara does. I also like Megatron's box, although beware the number of twisties. He has nearly as many as Unicron. Anyway, apart from the impressive size, you notice the heft--this is a heavy figure--and the poseability--24 points by my count. To get the most out of the legs, make sure to bend the fender-wings on his back around and farther down, which balances out his weight enough to get a much wider variety of poses (the batteries don't help, so you might not want to put any in, or, if you did put any in, not keep them in there) with his legs. His upper body doesn't have any problems. Strangely, although this toy uses rubbery plastic like Vector Prime, it feels stiffer (apart from the nose cone bits) and after I straightened out the spikes on his fender/armor accessory (it comes tied to the side of the box) I haven't had any problems. I suspect it's because the pieces are almost all a lot smaller than VP's sword and wings. I actually like the color scheme--it's not as good as the Galvatron redeco but there's something about its very weirdness that appeals to me. I read someone complaining that the headsculpt has nothing in common with G1 Megs, but if you flip the headcrests down, the head is a dead-on homage to both G1 Megs and BW Megs. It actually looks more like Megatron this way than either the Armada or Energon versions. I'm also happy Hasbro removed the green racing stripe from his nose that the GF version has--finally, a paint app deletion that's positive The dragster mode is just huge--about 13 inches long and 9.5 inches across in the rear, from the tip of one spoiler to another. The "Batmobile" styling doesn't bother me, in fact I like it. It doesn't particularly bother me for Megs to not always be a tank or weapon (especially since he almost certainly will be in the movie line), but I can see how that might bother others who are more purist than I am. The jet mode isn't as good as the dragster mode, but let's face it--apart from E. Scorpinok, the third mode on a triple changer is almost always an afterthought and isn't as good as the other two. Bearing that in mind it's fine as an extra mode, and it gives Megs something else to do. The biggest negative is that mine has a somewhat defective missile launcher--the missile will just not stay in the left launcher unless I get a screwdriver and carefully poke the mechanism back up out of the spring, and then it happens all over again if the missile gets launched, like GF Exillion's and some Hot Shots wing problems. I like this toy a lot, though, and I think it's worth a grab, so even if you don't like the colors, try for C. Galvatron. I wasn't sure I'd like it when I first saw it and now I love it more than any of the other recent Megatron toys.
Great review. I really dig Megatron...giant, extremely poseable, and imposing. I like the alt. modes too, even though there's not much to switching between car and jet modes, there is enough of a difference to merit calling it a triple changer. I really like the head sculpt on this toy too. The only downsides are the 'wings' on the back in robot mode hindering the posing options (I'll try your reccomendation on lowering them down), but overall I couldn't put Megatron down when i first got it. I'd give it a B+ or an A-....it's just too cool.
I definitely like Cybertron Megs. Very cool Batmobile mode, nice imposing bot mode, and a suitably intricate but not overly difficult transformation (as opposed to Energon Megs). My only real complaint are that his gun is kind of gimpy and the paint apps on every single one I've seen have been pretty sloppy (I actually "Frankensteined" two together and still was only able to obtain one with acceptable paint after touching up some of the black areas myself).
Thanks. I agree with the rating; I lean a bit more towards A- myself. I put up a thread in the Toyark about Megs's missile launcher issues, in case anyone else has or hasn't had problems. I'm curious to find out.
I am absolutely in love with this figure, moreso than Prime. I was very unsold in the beginning, and even passed him up the first time I saw him in the store. When I finally picked him up, I was very impressed. Beautiful articulation, and the sculpt is really just imposing. His weapons kick ass, and the thrusters are just too cool. Car mode is just huge, but I like the sleek-yet-powerful design. The weak jet mode doesn't bother me - like most transfans I accept it as one of the inescapable sins of the toy line. I think the only legitimate gripe comes from his color scheme. I can buy it, given that he's supposed to be an amalagram of Unicron and E-Megatron/Galvatron, but would understand why others may pass. The repaint looks very nice, and despite the price of the toy I'll be sure to snap it up. My only fear is that Galvatron won't look quite as menacing in white.
All in all i think the robot mode is great but somehow a car as megatron's primary alt mode bugs me. As a secondary alt mode it would be fine but as his main it just doesn't suit him. Overall design is a clear homage to CR Gigatron with his very biological look and multiple alt modes. My major complaint is his massive pontoons that I think would have been better replaced by wings, especially considering how tiny the wings on his jet mode are. or alternately make use of those pontoons by giving him a boat alt mode. At least then he can rule land, sea, and air. His main drawback in robot mode are his weapons. He has a blade thing and a gattling gun. The gattling gun is kind of on the small side considering that big guns have always accompanied a megatron. It's forgivable though. What bothers me is his pontoons have enough room to contain both a claw and a gun rather than one or the other, so it really should stand to reason that he should have two claws and two guns. it kind of feels like a cheap way out as it is. I'd also liked to have seen his missile launcher somehow useful in robot mode. But aside from these complaints I still love the figure. He's already great but I think he could have been even greater.
What's the best way to straighten the rubbery parts on this guy? The fender weapon on mine's got the usual bending, and there's also a slightly nasty warp on the "nosecone" parts that leaves an ugly gap between them on the top.
What kind of gap? Is it a narrow-wedge shape that tapers to a point, revealing the green plastic pieces underneath? Because if it is just that, and nothing worse, I think it's supposed to be like that. The plastic is molded up into sloped ridges around that section (making it a bit thicker, and even less likely to warp), and it's symmetrical.
I like Megs also..Nice review Mag Jr.. But one very important thing you missed was the weapon..A freaking TIRE?? WTF?? What happen to the good old days when weapons were as identifiable as the characters?
A very well-written review and you almost convinced me to buy it. But I think I'll be waiting for the Galvatron repaint: I can deal with the Batmobile alt mode, but that colour scheme on Megs really doesn't do it for me.
I've been wanting to pick up Megatron, I could use a large Decepticon to beef up my Decepticon ranks even more. I do like how Unicronish he is and the fact that Hasbro uses in his profile that he has salvaged parts of Unicron to beef himself up is really cool. Though the thought of him being a car and a CHUNKY jet kinda puts me off on getting him. Also his weapons are kinda lame, but his robot mode is just damn awesome. I love the Unicron vibe I get from him. I'll probably end up breaking down and getting him because there really isn't anything out till wave 2 really hits, and thats probably not going to happen in my area till late October.
If I were to buy one of the leaders based solely on the toy, I would pick Prime. If I were to buy one of the leaders based solely on my opinion of the character in the Cyberton cartoon, I would pick Megatron. However, I already bought Prime, since I decided to pick him up before I saw the cartoon. I'm not regretting that choice, because Prime is freakin' awesome, but I'm really wanting Megatron now. He's badass in the cartoon... sure he's a villain, but he's a smart villain... and not a whiner. I particularly like how, in Rush, after he loses the race, he doesn't tell Ransack and Crumplezone to help him trash anyone... he just says, "We're done, let's get out of here." Bitter, yes, but an honorable loser. As for his alt mode(s)... I see him as a very armored car... with lots of offensive capabilities. And it has flying capabilities. I would really like to pick this guy up. For the character, mostly... and on a lesser note, because I have never owned a decepticon leader.
The only two Cybertron figures I have so far are Megatron and Optimus. One thing I have to say is, what happened to Megatron's weapons? He's got the tire-cannon and the purple weapons with the spikes, and that's it for robot mode. I look over at Optimus and I see those two big cannons under his arms, the two extra missile launchers on the right one, the two cannons on his legs, and all Megs can do is rotate a tire at him? I look behind me and see Energon Megatron, with the shoulder mounted cannons and the tank weapon attached to his arm... my point is, Cybertron Megatron's weaponry seems rather inappropriate for the Decepticon leader.
With lightning attacks. Because, most likely, even the animation studio said, "WTF? No weapons? Let's make him shoot shit out of his hands. Yeah."
I just got Megs today and I love the design work that went into him. He just has this regal looking, badass sense about him. Like he'd steel your sucker and punch you in the nuts...just for kicks. He's big without being too bulky and sleek and angular at the same time. His gimmicks aren't too intrusive and he can turn at the waist....Take that Prime!!
I guess I'm the rain on the parade, but I'm rather disapointed with him. Not return and get my money back disapointed, but he's pretty low on my list of great figures. Both alt modes are very disapointing to me, he seems in many ways to be a failed precurser to Gigatron, just made big to justify the price. Sure, he's got great articulation, good characterization in the series, but that doesn't even things out that he's just lacking in that quality that says Decepticon Emperor. Energon Galvatron and SL Galvatron have it in spades, and this guy has squat. For the first time ever, I was blown away by the Prime, and disapointed in the Megs.
