That's why I went with TFA Grimlock - needed a Grimlock for my collection & liked how it handled both modes miles better than this one...

Wow. I just ordered this guy from TRU. Is he THAT much of a travesty??? I mean I've seen the hollow belly, and I get that that's pretty much an eyesore. But for those of us who don't shell out the $$$ for Masterpiece anymore, and we don't have Grimlock, is this not the best option out?

Depends on your personal priorities. The toy has some serious flaws like the hollow underbelly and terrible beast mode articulation. (an annoyance for me is the fighting of semi-flexible plastic parts with very stiff ratcheted joints when moving or transforming parts). Only the other hand, it has a great-looking robot mode with a good size, awesome accessories, a not-THAT-bad dino mode, and a gimmick that makes perfect sense for the toy.

For me personally, it's the best 'classics' Grimlock option. Masterpiece is in a league and size-class all its own, '06 Classics works better as other dino characters, Animated is its own thing (any my geewunny Grimmy shouldn't have a steamshovel jaw in both modes), Energon is nice, but a shorty.

Binaltech is sweet. Not a dinosaur, but it is a fairly flawless Mustang, so the alt mode was much better executed.

Picked him up today, yeah, unless you need one for your classics collection, then he is a definite pass.

I hate the lower legs, they're nearly impossible to move without them coming apart.

No waist articulation is killer. Definitely not worth $23 dollars, time to see if Blaster was worth it now.

Animated one is looking real.sweet after I have this in my hand.

I call it like I see it...it may be a decent kids toy, but this is an abomination for me.

The tail area looks a million times worse in person. The guy that ok'd this one needs a backhand for not making the shield 2 sided at least or at least a seperate part to cover some of the bottom.

And the arms flopping around in bot mode are atrocious.

Front dino arms pop off at the slightest touch...bot mode does not do enough to save this one for me.

I am so torn with this mold - I've wanted to love him since he was first revealed, and I've been very excited about him until...people started to get him in hand.

FoC Combaticons were an abomination IMHO, with the hollowness and cheap feeling plastic and I'm just so afraid that even a bad decision here and there in the mold design will be amplified because of teh material choices.

It's stuff like this that make me freak out about the awesome revels we got from Toy Fair.

And back to this toy, crap, what to do, I need a Grimy, HATE Animated and can't afford MP. Mold could be liveable I'm think if the material were decent but it just sounds like they aren't. This is enough to make me cry.

It's a $20 toy. Pick one up, see if you like him, and if you don't, return him. It's not making a major life decision.

Going by the review, the dino mode is a bit disappointing (far too many TFs lately have these annoying hollow bits) but I'm mostly OK with the 'bot mode, which is how I usually display my TFs.

Hopefully, we will get the rest of the Dinobots over the next few years.

    So it wasn't just me.

A word that comes to mind when comparing this mold is traffic cone.
The BW Megatron figure based on this mold will be such an easy pass.

I've had him since last Thursday. The biggest problem is of course that his chest area and his legs are hollow. He feels light. If there had been folding panels for the legs and chest, it would have made him more solid overall. Particularly in the legs area, where the tail section is just held in place by an L clip, and it's not as strong as the leg ratchet if you're just twisting and turning the figure. The Dino arms do pop off, but thats if you're twisting them too far. It's a kids toy, not a collectors figure. I'm happy that the ball sockets are designed the way they are. And the chest is really all about the light up feature which comes from the head, so it has to be hollow to an extent. If there had been panels, it would have meant a larger back for him. As it stands, he has way less kibble than prior incarnations of him because of the hollow points.

Negronicus - if you look on the inside of the leg, theres an L clip that the inside of the gold tail clips to.

However, with that said, there are a lot of pros to this figure. He's imposingly large, particularly when placed next to FOC Optimus, Ultra Magnus, or even Bumblebee/Cliffjumper/Megatron/Soundwave/Optimus from the WFC line. The detailing on the plastic is INCREDIBLE. The amount of red and placement of details make him look very close to the in game version. He looks good in bot mode or even Dino mode in a Classics line, because he's even bigger than Classics Prime. If you can get over the open underbelly in the Dino mode, you will be perfectly fine finding a home for him.

His light piping is also INSANE. His head visor will glow under any amount of light very easily, his midsection, chest, and various bits are designed to literally let light through at any angle. They designed him to look energized. The chest lights very easy with the switch, as does the dino head and Autobot crest on his head when pressed. I do wish the 'snapping jaws' extended more when the button was pressed down for the light. I'm sure it's a simple spring fix, but it's minor. His head is PERFECT. I expect modders to pick this figure up just for that head, because it evokes Grimlock in every way, even down to the emotion. Very War Within meets Classics.

He's also very poseable in bot mode. Dino mode is literally just the tiny arms and a little of the legs, and a little of the head up and down. He can pull off the right dino poses, but he's a little bricky that way, always has been. But bot mode? Wrist swivel, bicep swivel, full rotation on the arm, including pivot. The legs have a very tight ratcheting joint (think FOC Jazz), which is why the legs won't stay pegged if you're just forcing it, just hold the leg and it'll be fine, but full knee, hip, and even thigh rotation. And his balance is excellent, if you have the foot fully extended out in line to the rest of the heel.

Even better, the sword and shield. I agree with Superquad7, I wish they had incorporated the weapons into his underside to cover it up, but it would have detracted. As it is, you get more than enough port points to put the weapons in bot and alt modes. And the weapons look phenomenal with him or any of the figures. Magnus looks ready for gladiatorial combat with them. I wish we could get molds made of the weapons.

Worth 23? I don't know. I bought him, so for me it was a yes over Blaster, just because of funds. Blaster has a definite charm that Soundwave/Soundblaster was missing, but Grimlock is a definite win in the Voyager department. He might be hollow, but hes huge enough to make up for it. As a Beast Wars Megatron, he'll probably look good with the head change, but if you have a choice of only one mold, get Grimmy, and go find a non GPS Megatron from the original.

Overall, I dig him. I was this close to packing him back up and returning him when I first handled the cheap feeling plastic and transformed the hollow bits. But as others have said, he looks awesome and is sized right in robot mode, the light piping is great, and frankly I love the updated dino mode (ignoring the gaping hole, of course).
