The irony is they will match more than ever. Having Sideswipe the size of a seeker/Prime/Grimlock/Soundwave just wouldn't look right.

Ppl need to remember that MP doesn't equal biggest version/it's own size class, it's supposed to be the pinnacle of G1 of whichever particular figure. This looks to have delivered that even with ppls perceived neglected detailed needs they rightly/wrongly think are associated with the line.

FWIW my only issue is the head. They nailed the cartoon likeness of the main bot and alt mode yet fell short with the head. Maybe we'll see someone do a more cartoony one in the future.....

Unless I'm mistaken, Lambor's price in JPY is roughly equal to what the binaltechs cost years ago. Just about 800 yen more.

What most of you are comparing is the price in american dollars, which is due to the awful exchange rate.

The answer is of course that we're willing to pay for it [all those with at least one third party figure of 90-130 USD raise hands], Sideswipe is more complex than most, if not all Binaltechs [unless I'm off there's more parts that move, more intricate parts] and, much like the US market, takara's raising their prices.

Which is kind of a moot point, since Sideswipe, in JPY and not american dollars, is by FAR the cheapest masterpiece figure. They don't fall into size categories with other lines. They fall into size categories within their line.

I still don't get why everyone has such a boner for rubber tyres. You'll most likely be displaying him in robot mode and even if you will display the figure as a car rubber or plastic tyre won't make any difference to how it looks.

They're obviously different at a glance. Shiny hard black plastic and soft dark grey rubber (tires aren't usually pure black, especially TF tires) look quite different.

While very true I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. While I'm impartial to scale, I guess I'll only start getting worried about it if something really absurd were to happen like a bumble mp being the same size as mp-04 or a hypothetical devastator mp being as tall or marginally taller than MP-04 other than that, I'm not really bothered.

It's a masterpiece, in my opinion it should capture the word in every sense or at least as much as possible, think MP-04, although my least favorite MP, minus the faults he is the golden standard for masterpieces in my opinion, engaging and not too complex transformation, good proption of plastic and die-cast, good gimmicks and a good size even if not his size at least mp 10 for a guy like sideswipe which will set it apart from other toys like classics and binaltechs but with the diminshed size and more plastic the MP's are beginning to feel like souped up classics!

Like I was saying it is a masterpiece together with other qualities and the size it should convey epicness, it should be the mantlepiece and dare I say masterpiece! It should be a figure capable being capable of being able to be displayed on a shelf by it's own, it should be a figure that if you had three shelves and you had say MP-04 on the top shelf, G1 figures on the second and something crappy like beast wars or TF Prime or animated at the bottom shelf and you had a five year old kid he would know he could fiddle with the bottom shelf figures without a care, the second at his peril but he will know never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever to fuck with item on the top shelf! That should be the level of awesomeness a masterpiece should be able to exude on it's own!

The new scaling system has made it lose some of this epicness in my opinion, they're kind of like "hey, were better than classics but not a good as masterpieces". I think the scaling that would be ideal to me in masterpieces would be to make large bots like Prime, Megatron or Galvatron MP-04 height, smaller ones like Sideswipe, Jazz or seekers MP-09 height and smaller figures like bumblebee, cosmos et al mp-12 height. While I love my MP-12 to bits, I can't help but feel it's somewhat smaller size and more plastic composition makes it feel more like a child's play thing(not that I have a problem with that) than an antique or collectors item!

Trust you to know that dude :lol

I don't care to comment on the rest of the posts. Moan all you like, there aren't rubber tires on Sideswipe and there won't be.

And steering columns/working doors/interiors are nice, but if they in any way risk messing with the bot and alt mode look, they can stay the hell out of the picture.

Quick thoughts after getting mine tonight:

Alt mode is as gorgeous as I remember G1 Sideswipe looking when I was a kid. Only bigger, just like me. :)

Paint aps aren't the best. Several parts have black showing through the paint and there are chips.

Crooked side panels do sort of put a damper on the sexy look. Hopefully there is a way to mend this.

Transformation is intuitive and fun with a couple of "oh, neat!" moments.

Chest has a hole that is supposed to tab into a peg in the waist, but mine doesn't hold at all, like there is no friction there. Am I doing it wrong?

Bot mode is exactly what I wanted Sideswipe to look like when I was a kid. So damn good, and very poseable. Pretty much exactly Voyager sized.

Coins are wasted on me. I guess I just don't get the appeal of coins other than currency.

    Back to playing!

I'd say so---mine holds very tightly there. Are you sure you have the hood itself rotated ALL the way down on the chest-piece hinges? It does seem to like to only fold 90% of the way.

And? To be honest as long as it's a tire and it's on a rolling vehicle I could care how realistic it looks or what it's made of :lol

I have to say that I was on the fence about getting this guy until seeing the great feedback in this thread. When funds are available I will be getting this.

That was it, it holds super tight now. Thanks! Man I love this thing. The Countach was far and away my favorite car when I was a kid. I wasn't a car geek or anything, but the Countach really spoke to me. I even had a couple of photo books. So good to see Sideswipe represented this way again.

I think it's a nice enough figure, but not for the price. He's too small. He's about the size of a deluxe, which is hardly a masterpiece in my opinion.

Seems that there are some minor QC issues, but I've no problems with mine (lucky!).

He's small, even smaller than my voyager grapple (I consider grapple an MP too) but everything thing about sideswipe just screams masterpiece.

Great paintjob, looks convincingly metal-ish. Posing is perfect, all joints are tight.

    Definitely worth the money.

He's closer to Voyager size in robot mode. Large Deluxe in vehicle mode.

And ugh, this obsession over size. Masterpiece was never about any pre-determined size, and I don't know why people go "if he's not 10"+ tall, then he's not a Masterpiece to me".

"Masterpiece" is all about presentation, nothing more.

The Mona Lisa is a tiny painting, after all...

I'd like to see a comparison gallery with Classics Sideswipe and the new Masterpiece.

    Cons:

The sides will NOT sit flush in car mode--they always stick out.
The paint job sucks---over-spray, under-spray, runs, drips, bubbles, chips, embedded dust/specks. Frankly looks like a KO paintjob.

    Pros:
Every other piece clicks into place nicely.

Awesome bot mode, sucky car mode. (and this coming from a life-long Countach and Sideswipe fan)
