Thanks for the photo - that's definitely not what I would consider sitting.

    Looks pretty definitive to me.

(btw, I wasn't saying you missed something, just relaying what I thought I had read.)

    I just realized something....

Wouldn't a hypothetical American release feature short smokestacks as we've seen with other domestic MP Prime releases?

Quick Q - is the truck cab painted red? I know it's red plastic but I'm hoping, like the Alternities, he's painted to make him *look* die-cast even if he's not.

So ok, I love Grimlock because he's sturdy. Rodimus, on the other hand, I love just because he's the best Rodimus toy, but I wouldn't describe him as sturdy. Does this Prime feel like Grimlock in terms of sturdy, solid, chunky plastic, or does he feel hollow and fragile, like Rodimus?

And also, thanks for all the pics and the early review.

    :rolleyes2

You're entirely missing the point. This is not about paint chipping. A smaller toy that has little to no die-cast (thus cheaper materials overall) and less gimmicks shouldn't cost more. It's absurd. A figure of that price should have had more die-cast (it CAN be done), more gimmicks (where's the suspension? light-up matrix? arm communicators? moveable mouth plate? moving leg vents?) and more accessories. I have ordered one, I'll be glad to have one, but it certainly won't be the centerpiece of my collection. Just another Prime that happens to be expensive... when it could/should be have been much more. I had similar feelings toward MP Rodimus, but the fact that he has 4 distinct modes and a wicked transformation made me forget about the lack of die-cast. And he was much cheaper.

It was replaced with other gimmicks: A ion blaster foldable in the back, a better looking Matrix Chamber, the ability for a figure to site on the side (instead than on the center) in Truck mode. Not to mention, Spike, Roller and probably the best looking G1 Trailer so far.

There are plenty of toys that are smaller that cost more than a toy twice or more its size. Toys that are heavier have costed less than lighter toys as well.

While material cost IS certainly a big part of production cost, and even if we bar R&D cost, we still have to consider labor cost.

For one, you don't know exactly if the parts are cheaper or more expensive to produce. Yes, it can be assumed "generally" that die-cast might be more expensive, but it is not an absolute case.

For two, it may be much harder to produce, be it methods needed or what not.

I wouldn't dare say I have much knowledge on MP-10 production, BUT I do have a lot of work with an assembly line, and I can tell you for sure, that labor cost is just as much, if not more critical, than material cost.

So I mean, all I am saying is, we don't know what justifies or not justifies the cost. I myself won't want to pay 250$ for another optimus, but that's just me. I just don't think its fair to judge a product based on assumptions based on comparison of weight and material.

I agree. I look at other figures I own in the same price range and wonder how this thing costs what it does.

MP-10 has no die cast, it is not hand painted, it is not a limited release, it is not overly complex, it has no lights or electronics, it has virtually no gimmicks, it is not ridiculously large, and Takara/Hasbro own the character so there is no licensing costs.

:lol At least the gun folds up and stores in the back right?

Good point on labor cost for sure, but I think Megtroptimus has a point.

We aren't talking about electronics here, value isn't that hard to discern. If the figure isn't more intricate, i.e. more small moving parts that MP-01, than it's is easy to ask "where is the value"?

Since I don't own both to compare, I can't answer this, but someone who does should be able to do this pretty easily. Because right now, it "appears" similarly intricate BUT with a smaller number of gimmicks, less overall mass, and cheaper materials. That so far seems like a reasonable gripe.

I suppose the question is: Can we chalk all this up to inflation?

I feel ya. I actually think, cost wise, that Rodimus and now this Prime are just not worth what we have to pay to get them, but I am still getting them. As I said before, Rodimus was worth it to have the best Rodimus toy. Prime here is a little different, as I can't say he seems like the best Prime figure to me, though maybe the best G1 based from an aesthetical standpoint. Being on average about $50 more the Rodimus though is a little justified thanks to the larger and more feature laiden trailer. That's only by comparison though- as I said they both should still be cheaper.

I never really mentioned anything about price. All I ever mentioned was the actual physical preference of diecast vs. plastic for collectors (PRODUCTION COSTS ASIDE). Some collectors prefer the latter, others the former. The complaints against both materials are valid. You think plastic is cheap and brittle and that diecast is superior? That's fine. I can kind of see your stance on that. Others feel the opposite because the paint chips on diecast and can make a figure cumbersome to handle and pose. Both stances are valid. That's it , that's all I'm saying, and that's all I ever said.

And even though I never specifically said anything about production costs before this post, I can see your point, but I'm treating that as an entirely separate issue and one that had nothing to do with where I was getting at earlier.

Ok, but with Rodimus, there are a bunch of small moving parts making him both intricate AND delicate. I don't have MP-10 in hand but where is that on him?

(This is directed at the labor cost part of the equation)

Well, I know megatroptimus has a point, and certainly there are good reasons behind it. From a casual glance, I would agree with him, too. But I think it isn't too fair to judge a product's production value based on what we know, which is very little. I mean, NONE of us have the physical cost in front of us.

    Yup.

And myself, I'm more raging at the (price) machine more than anything as I would love to own MP-10 but honestly that ain't happening. I will almost be guaranteed to grab the Hasbro-dized version though. I just want to be suer I'm getting max value for my dollar.
