It seems so crazy to me in retrospect that we were able to walk into TRU and buy MP-10 for $99. Even crazier that I actually found one! That is a lot of great toy for less than what Sunstreaker currently costs.

That was an anomaly even at the time. The takara version came out first and was $250 at U.S. retailers. $100 was a steal for the hasbro version. The hasbro version was one of my last toy hunts. Shortly after I had kids and didn't really have the ability to make toy store runs in the early morning.

It certainly was an anomaly. This figure did not last long at my local TRU's. I only saw it twice. It's got a great sculpt and decent articulation. It's just limited in areas one wouldn't expect given the range of most of its joints. That's the annoying aspect about it. Otherwise it's great.

The only things I didn't like were hindered hips, lack of double jointed knees, gorilla arms and the small gun.

The limited hips drive me crazy, and they even carried that dumb design over exactly on the PotP Optimus. Still great toys though.

I was never able to find a copy at TRU depsite hunting for it.

So I'm indebted to @Sean Whitmore for selling me a copy for $100, and I can honestly say he's one of my favorite Transformers of all time already. He's just fantastic. He brings the energy of the old leader class with higher build quality. He's just so fun to transform and he looks so good.

He also makes me miss the older MP style of creating the ultimate interpretation of a character rather than a fetishistic recreation of a specific version.

There’s a lot of things I still like about MP-10, especially its presentation through deco selection. Whoever did the deco selection for both Takara and Hasbro releases keyed in on wanting to make it eyecatching on display. It captures hints of the shiny chromed look of the G1 Prime toy paired with Sunbow cartoon influence without veering 100% in either direction.

As far as approach goes, with MP it changes through the years as Takara doesn’t like doing what they’ve done before and with Convoy/Prime especially, they like to take a different approach each time. Which is why MP-10 still has a place in my collection even though I have MP-01 and still like it. MP-10 went for a hybrid approach and it was influential since some later Prime figures took some design inspiration from MP-10.

I do wish it had the option for plastic tires instead of rubber and had the ability to pivot the shoulders inwards to enable the gun to be held by both hands without needing to raise the arms high. I know rubber tires are preferred for MPs but I prefer hard plastic as they’re less likely to crack over time.
