Lucky Draw Clear ROTF Leader Optimus Prime

Family Mart Lucky Draw Clear ROTF Leader Optimus Prime:

    Background Info:
This figure was given away according to a drawing at participating Family Mart convenience stores in Japan. I read that there were 2 figures allocated to each store. I have no idea how many Family Marts there are in Japan, but I would say it is a safe bet that there were only a couple of thousand of this figure produced for this give-away.

    Price:
I originally thought this figure would be difficult to obtain, but currently there are about 10 of them listed on eBay and a few online stores such as YaHobby.com have them for sale. Be prepared to pay a premium for this figure as it is relatively rare. Prices range from $275 shipped to $325 shipped.

I was able to get my Prime from ebay and had such a great experience with the seller that I am going to recommend him by name. I ordered Prime for $285 shipped on Saturday and promptly paid. I received an email from the seller, shoukichi-2008, within a hour or so telling me about himself and assuring me of a good experience. Long story short, I ordered on Sat and have him in my hand from Japan on Tues morning. On top of that, the seller was extremely friendly and created the single best experience I have ever had on ebay. I cannot recommend him enough. If you need anything from Japan, please contact him.

    Mold:
This incarnation of Prime is a translucent version of the original mold of ROTF Leader Prime as opposed to the later Buster Prime version from Takara. As such, he comes with the battle-mask head and non-removable gas tanks. He therefore lacks the extra "Buster" gun of that version and open face with the mouth. He also comes with two energon swords as opposed to the battle hooks of the Hasbro version, Battle-Hooks Optimus Prime.

Clear Prime is indeed made of clear plastic almost entirely throughout. There are a few strategic pieces of solid gray plastic and black plastic, most probably for structural reasons, but 95% of Prime is translucent, including even his tires. Surprisingly the one thing on Prime that should be clear and was instead painted orange are his swords. On my original release Prime I took some paint remover and exposed the clear plastic underneath and left some orange accents. Clear Prime has his swords uniformly painted orange exactly like the original release. I would have preferred the clear orange plastic of which the swords are actually made, but for some reason they were instead painted orange. I think I am going to end up switching the swords so that Clear Prime is uniform throughout.

    Paint:
There are very few paint apps on this version. There are the normal flame paint apps as seen on all versions of Prime, but they are the bland apps as opposed to the pinstripes of Buster Prime. There is a little silver paint on the head, specifically on the antennae and the cheeks. There is also one small strip of blue paint on the forearms. Basically there are all the normal paint apps from the original Hasbro release (including everyone's favorite Autobot symbol on the sun visors) while all the extra paint details of Buster Prime are missing.

I saw one on eBay about a week ago but I passed him as I haven't quite figured out how much I'm prepared to pay for one.
    Do want badly though.

He'd look great alongside my Black ROTF Prime.

Thanks for the pic, I am quite on the fence about this toy so I'll appreciate your input. I still don't know if clear plastic is flattering on the Movie design.

    Ebay:
Congrats on the purchase man. That is one beautiful figure, I wish I could afford one, but it is just not in the cards right now. I love the look of the head.

Added alt mode pics and the display pic. I originally bought the light up pedestal and acrylic cover to display a custom chrome RotF Prime that I ordered, but that project was never completed. It does however work out rather well for me since I was able to get the clear Prime and display him in all his lit up awesomeness. Pictures don't do it justice.

That underlit display with clear Prime is absolutely gorgeous. I could actually sit and look at that for a long time...

    Ebay:
I guess I'm a "Leader Class Completionist" myself....I just snagged one of these Family Mart beauties for $260 shipped from a seller on ebay. For a ~$40 figure, I must say, ouch. But I had to have it :D

Absolutely, stunningly beautiful, and a perfect example of why clear toys make me a snuggly inside. However, it would be terrifying to handle. So many thin parts molded out of clear plastic have more potential for heartbreak than any toy with GPS.

I like him too but I think I'd be more miffed at the lack of a Buster Prime.... I quite like that ordinary Japanese Optimus too they grey neck and silver toes look nicer than the western one.

I just bought this and and a bunch of other lucky draw ones that was released at the same time. Each of these lucky draw transformers were prefixed with a letter: A is clear rotf prime, B is Animated prime and then there was C, D, E, F & G which were some other figures. If someone wants to tell me the name of the other figures it would be appreciated.

I think you bought what I was thinking about buying - if the guy was also selling lots of EZ series stuff too.

I currently have Jetfire combined with original Prime and the Clear Prime in that display case on the lighted pedestal. Kinda difficult to get him in there just right. I will try to get some combined pics sometime soon, but I make no promises. If someone else would like to take a shot at it, feel free.

That is awesome. I bid on one on Ebay after seeing your review, but right now don't wanna drop the money.

    Bought a Buster instead.
