Is this worth getting as a gift to him? We've been slowly collecting the parts, but it's old, it's reaching the point where I worry for it, and generally seems to have lived the good life. He loves the team as well, so anything I need to worry about the Reprolabels can't fix?
If he digs the original then it is a very worthwhile gift. The price is definitely right and well, as a gift I would say it would make it even better.

I would go for it.

For everyone just now picking this up, there are of course Reprolabel's reproduction stickers if you want to replace Hasbro's poorly-applied-at-the-factory ones, as well as their "X8" upgrade set for them---that may be a good option, if you just want to enhance/tweak a few of the stickers without shelling out for the entire G1 Piranacon sticker set.

(some of the upgrade labels are add-ons, and some are replacements--about 50/50 I'd say)

Apparently the pink land shark should be a purple land shark. Knowing nothing of the original this does not bother me. Your milage may vary. Also, apparently the team leader's head should be black. It is green in this set. Aside from that, you might need a bit of nail polish on the shark's gun.

Piranacon as he should be

I just want to say thank you to everyone here who posted on limb arrangement and tips and the reprolable upgrade set (that I had no idea existed because the only picture is of a Decepticon logo....*sigh*...)

My Piranacon now stands straight up, holds Overbite, and looks the way a combiner should.

Coupled with the Crazy Devy parts (and I pre-ordered the new waist attachment too!) he's so much better than he was out of the box.

YAY SEACONS!

On a side note, does anyone read Naughtilator's wiki entry and hear the Superintendent at Springfield screaming his name like he does "SKINNER!"?

I just got my hands on this thing and the first thing I noticed (except for the misplaced stickers) was the cheap KO 99 cent store quality plastic HASBRO used. I fell parts will break off over time due to the quality. Has anything broke off with anybody's by this time? I am glad I picked this up at a cheap price. I guess if you have the cash pick up the original. I am sure it was better made.
