I'm still in the mood of going back and getting older TFs I never had if I find them interesting, or a bargain. I found a lot on CL with a box full of rotf stuff, including a leader prime, and a complete, mint supreme devestator. Seeing how we are starting a new year with combiner wars, it's appropriate to bring this guy up, just to take a look back at retail hasbro's big combiner....

I knew going in there were no bot modes. Fine. When my son and me dug into the box, he literally squealed with surprised when he seen the size of some of these construction vehicles. The big excavator (demolisher?) size is seriously nuts. When someone said it's about as big as a shoebox, they were not exaggerating. It's enormous, and possibly one of the biggest alt modes I've seen. The level of detail is very nice on each one. They all look the part, and if you don't look too hard, you might not know they were transformers right away.
Features you ask? They freaking roll. Mabye a crane or bucket moves... But they roll. At least they roll good.
The transformation is pretty simple, not much has too it, but it really does a good job of making the movie devestator. Don't buy this for the transformation. Period.

    Combined mode.....

Aaaahhhh... Combined mode. Now, I remember this at the store. I passed it up when target clearance them. No bot modes? Fuck you I say to thee. I would not buy it. After having this in hand, and actually Messing with it, I really dig the combined mode. This feels more like a masterpiece Bandai than a hasbro offering. It's VERY tough... You just don't feel like you can break it. It has this Tasmanian devil stance, with such a massive upper body, yet the legs hold its weight with ease. Arms and elbows have ratchets and swivels.. Waaaaay more articulation than I expected in the arms. You can get some really neat poses out of it. The main gimmick Is the vortex mouth of death. It's so big you can pack about 7-8legends in his mouth. When you pull down on the lever, his head raises, the maw opens, and you get this obnoxiously loud devestator voice, and a light show inside his mouth, that would make Donna summers wanna boogey down in there. Expectations were low, gimmick is fun and fucking impressive. My son could not stop messing with it.

For what I paid for the lot, and what I see these sell for, I stole it. I'm glad I got my hands on one to finally see. Now who is this for? Kids hands down. It's a great, robust and tough toy that a kid could play with and it seems like it would hold up well. It's not for the collector that wants to transform stuff. You would get bored with it there. This would be ideal for the collector that wants a movie devestator to sit with the movie collection and tower over everything. It's way smaller, but it's almost as heavy as metroplex. The ideal person this would be great for, is someone who collects legends, and even plays with them. My son immediately dug out skids and mudflap legends and recreated the scene from ROTF.

To sum up, very fun toy, great for kids, great for legends and movie collectors, or guys that just like massive ass combiners. The combining joints are so tough, when it's all together, you just can't help but play with this thing. I'll tell you the number one reason collectors REALLY dislike this... Its because it's a great toy, and not the best adult collectable. My inner 7 year old digs the pics out of it, and I'm glad I finally touched one.

Well put snake eyes. I remember seeing this on clearance for 50 bucks in 09. Swore I would hate it and thought the voyagers and deluxe constructions would be better. Picked up a MIB Supreme Devastator for 125.00 a couple of years ago and I now know how wrong I was. Devastator is a beast and centerpiece of my movie line bookcase.

I've had a renewed interest in this considering how much of an oddity it was in the ROTF line. I'm not sure if I wanna drop big money on it but if I could find it 100 or less I'll get it.

Anyways, to comment on Snake Eye's post...I think a lot of the hate comes from how it looks. It doesn't look quite like Devastator from ROTF, and many like me just doesn't like how he looks in general. He's just not a very pleasing looking robot to have. That being said he's big and chunky and I still sorta want it.

Just because time has passed doesn't mean we can start liking this guy. Stay strong. Don't let the hate die.

bro....thats why I never had any interest in it. But now I find myself being drawn into the ones everyone hates. I got this thing dirt cheap, would I have been disappointed if I dumped a hundo on it? prolly, but not much.

I heard so much hate about Chug Tankor...LOVE that one. Chug Ironhide..I dig it. Im almost using the hate scale to guide me to find cool shit.

Now, Im not saying run out and find one of these. quite the contrary. If you could get one for a deal, JUMP on it..thats what im saying. The overall durability of this toy is impressive. It is so robust that I had no problem handing it to my son and just saying "figure it out!" and he really liked it. The gimmick is neat too. My son and me play with legends together, and this is THE toy to play with legends with.

From the days of almost MP quality of every toy of the ROTF and HFTD line, to now, we have witnessed a dramatic change in quality and design of Hasbro retail shit. to me, the absolute bottom of the barrel, low point for TFs is the TFP and BH lines (Sans 1st ed shit). from there we have seen quality and design improved drastically. I can totally see a platinum rerelease of this guy for CW for a store exclusive.

As a ROTF toy..yea..its simple...but as a transformer THIS big and robust..its neat. of course we all wanted bot modes, but for the legends collector or movie buff..its worth a look if you can get a deal on one. If I bought it back when it was on clearance, I would have changed my mind when I opened the box.

I just never even gave it a chance..THATS a shame..I need to stop doing that and open my mind a bit. this one is FUN!

Ironically I remember people enjoying the Legends version more. And IIRC, that one also had a G1 colors version as well.

My Supreme Devastator is proudly displayed at the bottom of a box in my garage. He still makes that creepy laugh when I go in, even though I bought him at least four years ago! Eep!

I think the Legends one was cool as anything. Cheap and with robot modes. That's what I'm talkin' about!

I'd like to see a KO or third party make an scaled version of the legends toys. If one did, I want it to be the same size as the official Supreme sized toy of ROTF Devastator

I came by to resurrect what I assumed would be a zombie thread. Very interesting to find it's less than a month since the last post!!

anyway, I've just acquired ROTF Devy for the first time, and here are my thoughts.

    • SOLID AS FUCK. Wow. My only complaint is it's more than a little easy for Mixmaster to pop out, but since it's easy to pop back in, I don't mind THAT much.
    • alt modes are sweet too. Terribly out of scale even with each other, if you measure by the doors to get in those things. But whatever.
    • He is fun to put together, and impressive to look at in person.
    • He pretty much does exactly what the movie itself suggests. Without comparing him to other figures, designed for other times, to do other things... Both the movie and the toy feature a bunch of construction vehicles, that skip right to combining with each other. You don't see any robot modes in the movie in that scene, and you get no robot modes in the toy. So when I look at it like that - measuring the toy by its own merits, and its ability to put in toy form what I saw in the movie - I think this figure did a great job. He's like a six-vehicle Duocon. (Sexacon? yikes)
    • Furthermore, people didn't bitch when Armada Tidal Wave didn't have 3 separate, smaller robot modes for his three components... because Tidal Wave was a new idea, and had nothing to compare it to preceding it. While yes, we expected Devastator to be closer to G1 Devastator, let's be honest... a whole lot of movie things ain't G1.
    • This thing beats Energon Devastator, his Classics G1 flavored repaint, in terms of sheer fun. For me at least. He's hulking, and just fun to play with. Legends Skids and Mudflap fit in his mouth. Which leads me to another one of my points...
    • I'm finding a lot of cool crossplay with figures from different classes... ROTF Devy scales well with legends figures. Just as i'm finding now, how cool the CW Combiners look next to the Legends 2pk Optimus and Megatron, rather than their current Voyager and Leader incarnations from the same line.
    • Lastly, an interesting take on what to put in a figure. Rather than shove as many gimmicks into one figure, with them hampering each other, they decided to split the gimmicks up into more than one figure - WHat i mean is this - They wanted a GIANT, SOLID, fun to play with combiner that didn't fall apart when you played with it. They wanted something that represented the movie's depiction of the character. You get that in Supreme Devastator. They also wanted to have a Devastator that could split into its component vehicles, AND transform into robots. Something they felt might screw with the solid construction (pun intended) of the behemoth. So they made a legends figure to satisfy the desire for an ROTF Devy that disengaged AND became a bunch of robots. (even if they didn't do that in the movie)

This happened again in AOE, when they gave us a car Drift, and a separate helicopter Drift, rather than try and shoehorn the alt modes next to each other to make one figure that would capture neither alt mode very well.

Anyway, to conclude, I'm glad I picked up this figure and he gets two thumbs up from me!!

Lol, the original batteries in my G2 laser rods, and laser rod Optimus still function, and I've owned them for 20+ years

I keep looking at him, but then when I look I'm always disappointed. I may get him eventually anyhow.

I just wish they'd detailed him a little better. He just seems to clunky to display with my other nice figures and if I can't do that there's not much point. I think it might take more than paint to make him right.

None the less, I keep looking, so I may...

There was a KO upscaled legends ROTF devastator made before. I bought it and it scaled well with my cyberverse/legends collection.

To each his own, I understand. I remember around the time the original robots in disguise line came out, there was a McFarlane line of transforming combinable robots. Actually I don't think they transformed I think they were just robots that turned into arms and legs and stuff. This thing was about 16-17 inches tall, and articulated and detailed as all get out. He was a pain in the ass to put together, and lost lots of luster for me in the end. I'll take a slightly less detailed combiner that's fun to play with any day.

That's what I love about generations Metroplex as well. All the new legends work great as a battle scene surrounding him. If you have both, I'd love to see a pic of Metroplex with ROTF Dev to get an idea of size.
