A special thanks to Spirit-of-Cybertron for supplying the demo figure for this review. As an eBay powerseller, Spirit-of-Cybertron is a very reliable source for these figures. He ships out of the states, so no need to worry about US customs manhandling your figures. Some notes ... The figure received was a demo. It came with 2 fists, a clear gun, and an extra set of short stacks. Before purchasing, please consult with your source on exactly what's included. I'm 99% sure Roller, stickers, and other bits will all be there. Taking photos of this figure was challenging. It's was difficult to capture the detail on the Prime. Just know that the figure is completely clear. No plastic was frosted. Stamp Crystal ![]() From the first run KO ![]() It looks like this Prime was done from a completely seperate mold. Robot ![]() ![]() ![]() Pros: + The plastic is of high quality. The texture is just like the original. + The joints are tight, but not overly clamped down. The shoulders and legs ratched into place with no issues at all. Cons: - The fists were overly tight. It felt like I was going to separate the forearm at the seams. - The yellow eyes should have been reconsidered. - The tinted windows holds true to the "lunch box special" version ... but sure does look goofy. Note: ± Minor chest window issue. The chest isn't diecast metal anymore and the translucent plastic seems not to fit right. It won't close 100% shut. I kept it sealed by using the head to pin it in place. Looks just fine in robot mode. Truck ![]() ![]() ![]() Pros: + The clear tires really add to this figure. It's a very nice touch. + The over-all coloring blends very well. Clear, silver, and chrome give such a clean look. Cons: - again, that window color has to go. - the chest doesn't stay closed, it's evident here. - didn't roll too well. There was a bum wheel on the right side that was too loose. Trailer ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pros: + Magnificent construction. + Clear as glass. I used Ricochet as a high contrast piece to display this. + Roller's launcher ejected with a passion. Cons: - There was 1 discolored piece in the retractable arm. Random Closeups ![]() ![]() ![]() No real point to these. I was trying to get as close as possible ... hopefully to catch some details. Conclusion Although the toy has some flaws, the overall "wow" factor overrides it. The Crystal Optimus Prime is a piece that will turn heads. The entire fact that something like this hasn't been done by Takara makes it a bit more special too. Originality: 1.0/1.0 + Never seen this one before. Quality / Construction: .7/1.0 - the overly tight fists and gapped chest door wasn't too bad, but still. Visual Appeal: 1.0/1.0 + I wish I had a black light, this would look much cooler. Also, the demo box (not pictured) isn't a matte finish anymore. It's glossy and shiny like a mirror. (see Mirage review, it's just like that) Sense of Value: 1.0/1.0 + I can't complain here. I have one on order and it feels like it's worth every penny. Gotta have it factor: 1.0/1.0 + I'm a sucker for clear toys. This goes so well with the e-Hobby Ghost of Starscream and Crystal Hot Rod. Final Score: 4.7/5.0, 94% Next up? Sharkticon Gnaw. Expect this one early next week. It's in my possession and feels solid as a rock. |

| Henshin Sentai ![]() Join Date: Dec 2006 Posts: 3,535 Location: Toronto, Ontario | thanks e3nine, as always. Yeah the colour on the window is terrible, almost ruins the fig. As always I'm not a fan of using the trademark stamp and the look-alike box but this figure is otherwise intreguing and for the ts stamp since it's obviously not going to be mistaken with an authentic vintage Prime it doesn't bother me as much. The quality problems you identify sound consistent with the sorts of problems the figures by these bootleggers have (jammed wheels, loose/unfitting spots). If I ever see him for around $50 I will buy him and burn the box. I hope they get rid of that damn ugly window colour though. |

And I'll reiterate the above, "limited to 500" is marketing tool, there's probably already been more than 500 sold on eBay since these were first released. | |
