Everytime there is a new character design... I would compare it with the older generations... I asked myself would I find surprise by this RiD Jazz ? or just more disappointment ?
Wow. I'm having pretty much the exact opposite expierence with my Rid Jazz. I agree that the toy doesn't look much like the show model, but it's still a really fun toy in my book.
Actually I too think it has potential to be a fun toy. But I find it hard to like a figure if it's not only non-show accurate but doesn't look good. And I'm usually not harsh on simplified toys; I don't mind and actually like the One-steps. You do have a point thou. I'm hoping the Takara ver.will fix enough of my problems to consider purchase. Each to their own
Don't get me wrong, you made valid points. I think i'm just glad to have found a figure that is in good shape out of box after my CW Magnus had some QC issues.
I came to terms with the overall reduction in TF quality long ago. In that context, RiD Jazz is excellent, one of my favorites of this line after Grimlock and Drift. The exaggerated proportions of both modes remind me of Animated, in a good way. YMMV, of course. Plus, I can't help but see a Gundam F91-style shot lancer in his weapon, so there's some additional personal bias there...
Found a Jazz today and somewhat reluctantly bought him. I wasn’t planning to get one based on my experience with Sideswipe but he looked good enough in person. I’m glad I got him. Sideswipe was a mushy, loose, thin-plastic mess but Jazz is solid in both modes, has a fun transformation and the plastic has a nice thick and sturdy feel to it. Even the sculpted circle for his gimmick sticker isn’t as noticeable as other RID toys and when the sticker is removed it reveals a nice red paint application on his abdomen. If I was pressed for criticisms I’d say he needs more paint but I’m not very critical of this line beyond durability and quality. Overall he's my second favorite of the line so far.
While waiting for the Protectobots to come out around here, I decided to curb my impatience by picking up RiD Jazz. Initially, I was disappointed. Bland figure, lack of paint apps, reused transformation scheme (no visor!). But the longer I dick with him, the more I like him. I've thrown on a few custom paint spots, and I noticed that, though it's a little hard to navigate to, his car roof/back pack tabs in to his back and really tightens him up. I say "hard to navigate to" because the car doors, the head cover and roof need to be finagled to get it into position to tab it. It's probably common knowledge but the instructions didn't mention it and it took me a while to find it out.
I don't understand the vitriol being hurled at this figure by people who don't even have it in hand. It's a fun, solid figure. Hollow in places, missing paint in others, but really: what figure in recent memory hasn't? If you're looking for the worst figure in the RiD line, I suggest you look no further than Jazz's wavemate. Sideswipe is a loose, thin, fiddly mess that refuses to peg together and is no fun whatsoever. Jazz is solid, posable, and most importantly, fun!
Holy fuck. I said it before when I got into them but I'm really damn impressed with RID 2015. I got Jazz just an hour ago and now I'm playin' with him. I thought he was just gonna be the same ol' Prime Bumblebee transformation...but he isn't! He does some new, cool things that I really like with the transformation. Also, I think his robot and alt mode look real damn good. Any lack of paint apps will be solved with Reprolabels no doubt, so I'm not bothered by the lack of paint at all. Strong Arm and Steel Jaw really hooked me, and Drift and Jazz now have officially made RiD one of my favorite toy lines.
Jazz is a classic example of a toy that doesn't look so great in photos, but wins you over once you have it in hand. He's simple, but he's just plain fun in both modes, and solidly built. I think it says something that most people on the boards who say they don't like him don't actually own him, whereas most of the positive feedback comes from people who do own him. EDIT: Oh, and I own him. And like him a lot.
i love this mold! it reminds me of the fun i have with upscaled prime vygr predaking. he has a simple transformation but he is so much fun in both modes and hold together vary well. jazz is a good example of making a transformer work when you want to keep it simple and effective. yes, the paint is plain but that can be easily fixed. jazz is great! pick him up!
Robot Mode: In robot mode Jazz might just be my favorite RID 2.0 toy yet. The robot not only has the classic Jazz look down pat, it’s also amazingly well articulated. Okay, no twisting wrists, but he has more than enough joints to pull off all sorts of cool poses (as Jazz is contractually obligated to be cool) and his feet are big enough that he has a solid stance no matter the pose. RID Jazz looks wider and more muscular than most of the recent Jazz figures, giving him a more powerful image. At first glance his face looks a bit strange, but that’s mostly because the ‘chin-strap’ of his black helmet isn’t black, but rather silver like his face, which makes you think he has a wide-open mouth. I’m probably going to color that chin strap black, just to improve the visuals. And speaking of colors, that’s Jazz’ main weakness. The figure is actually quite well-detailed, but much of it is swallowed up by the mostly white paint job. Jazz really needs some more colored highlights and details in order to bring his A-game. Also, he has a pretty weird weapon that seems half lance, half sniper rifle. A black gun would have worked just fine here, just saying. So overall: a good robot mode, really nicely done, but it really needs more painted details. Alternate Mode: Jazz transforms into a futuristic white sports car with his traditional blue stripes. The car as such looks good and everything folds together well, but the lack of colored details becomes even more apparent here. Jazz has sculpted head and tail lights, room for license plates and even a tiny spot on the back where an Autobot symbol is clearly meant to go, but it’s all just white plastic and thus the detail work is pretty much swallowed up. Jazz’ weapon can be mounted on top which looks... strange. Better leave it aside. Anyway, a good car mode, but please, please, please add some colored details, somebody! Remarks: Jazz only made a single appearance in the Robots in Disguise cartoon so far, being typical Jazz. Smooth, fun-loving, and competent. Which is just fine with me, because Jazz is – in my opinion – one of those characters best used sparingly. It’s cool when he shows up, but he is not the kind of character meant for continued center stage use. The toy itself is pretty cool, probably my favorite among the RID 2.0 toys so far, but it really needs more colored highlights. Maybe not quite as many as the Takara version of the toy has, but definitely more than it has. I’m hoping for Reprolabels to come through here soon, otherwise I might have to grab my painting gear and do it myself. Anyway, Jazz is a definite recommendation, but do plan in some additional stickers or painting work. Rating: B+ Source: Transformers Universe
