Combiner Wars First Aid

Next up on the new Combiner Wars figures is everybody's favourite Medical-Chief-in-Training with a disposition towards Autobot badges, First Aid!



First Aid looks fantastic and is by far my favourite of the Protectobots. Initially I was apprehensive about the idea of him being a retool of Offroad, but the tooling is extremely heavy, with far less parts being taken over from Offroad then completely new, making him feel and look completely new.



The sculpting and paint on the figure is wonderful. His eyes are the best part in my opinion, the blue looks so bubbly and friendly and just brings an insane amount of character to the figure. Whether you prefer First Aid as a pacifist as in the cartoon or someone who just loves to help anyone and everything like in the original bio, the head is a perfect match to the character.



The comparison to Offroad shows the extent of the new tooling. Really the only remaining parts are the thighs and forearms, plus the axe weapon and the wheels. The transformation remains the same, but the figure has gotten a complete make-over.



After a quick and easy conversion identical to that of Offroad, you're given a nice little ambulance mode! First Aid looks a bit more ready for battle then his original G1 version, but the mode still matches with the character, making him an excellent update of the G1 toy. The paint on the alt mode is nice, with nothing being left bare or notably missing outside of the rims.



Seeing his alt mode next to Offroad's, you'd be forgiven thinking they were completely different toys! I applaud Hasbro on the use of the tooling, one of the best they've ever done, right up there with Sandstorm.



First Aid's combiner mode is traditionally an arm, most memorable from the episode of the cartoon "The Ultimate Weapon" in which First Aid decided to take his pacifist ways to the extreme, leaving Defensor armless!



The transformation is very basic, most easily starting in Robot Mode, you simply move his arms around and flip out his combiner port, but he makes a solid arm for Defensor. This is the placement I prefer for the figure.



Officially, and where he'll be placed in the IDW Comics, Combiner Wars First Aid's placement is a leg for Defensor. I'm not sure why they've made this change, but I hope it has something to do with First Aid's attachment to his deceased friend Ambulon, who's alt mode was a leg.



The leg mode is basically his alt-mode with a combiner port sticking out, but it does the job well. He First Aid is solid in both modes, making him a great addition to the Scramble City-esque line.

First Aid is an awesome figure that I highly recommend. The Protectobots are all fairly great, but First Aid just has the character and history to make him necessary for any and every collection. Definitely, in my opinion, the star of the new Deluxes.

haha, his 'attachment' to ambulon. i get it.

he's absolutely adorable and i love how the retooling makes his vehicle mode look like a bigger scale than offroad's. i think he's in scale with scout/legends cars if you're into that sort of thing.

Yep great review. The only disappointment is that his head is a bit different from the IDW comics? Anyway, will be buying the Takara version for sure.

 

Looks like a hell of a retool and that head sculpt definitely does it for me.

 

How well do First Aid's arms peg in place for combiner arm mode? Offroad's arms don't want to stay in place in arm mode at all... so he's Menasor's leg.

First Aid, however, WILL be an arm for Defensor though, so I'm curious. (Just like Streetwise will be the left leg and Blades will be the right arm.   )

 

Ok. That's some heavy retooling. This figure escapes my "too much design reuse in CW" wrath... barely.

The Protectabots seem to be the best combiner we're getting.

 

And wait, Megatron is on the Lost Light? Damn, I have some reading to do!

 

I was disappointed that the bars to the sides of the vehicle mode rear turned out to be slightly too thin for the c-clip weapons from a few years back :-(

 

I doubt I'll be able to complete Defensor, but I'll definitely be getting First Aid, mostly in part of how his portrayals in the G1 cartoon and MTMTE made him the only Protectobot with any real character. I love how closely he resembles his IDW counterpart despite being an Offroad retool.

Also which comics do the Protectobots come with?

He's by far the best of Wave 3! I can't wait to get my hands on him!

Thanks for the review! I don't plan to complete the Protectobot set but this guy is a must for my Lost Light display.

 

The mold looks a bit better than that of Offroad, at least in terms of vehicle mode.

 

That is one hell of a retool. Very awesome.

 

Could I request a picture of him with Firefly if anyone has the time? Want to see if their colors look redundant together. Would be appreciated.
