Ultra Magnus Bird and Soundblaster Pig

ehrmahgerd Hasblow is sech a sellout!1!

Angry Birds have shown up a month early in Australia to get ready for the wave of Christmas toys and I've enjoyed playing the game so I thought I'd pick up one of these to try out. The price here in Australia is about $11 for 1-packs and $20 for 2-Packs. Luckily I got this for the more reasonable $13 (which I believe will be US RRP) because Woah! that's pricey for what they are. Anyway, thought I'd do a real quick "review" of these guys to give a quick overview of the line to any of those considering picking some up.

Both Single and Double Packs come packed with a "Telepod" Matrix that lets you interact with the game. Really they're glorified magnifying glasses that magnify a barcade on the bottom of the toy so that the Tablet/Phone's camera can scan it.

The toys are extremely simple, small and cute. Obviously Ultra Magnus is a repaint of the Single Pack Optimus Prime Bird, while Soundblaster is a repaint of the Single Pack Soundwave Bird. Transformation is as one-step as it gets. Push down on the head and it'll collapse in vehicle mode and then push the head back and it'll pull back out into robot mode. Articulation is non-existent bar up and down movement in the arms. Unlike many Activators and One-Steps, I've never had it ever get stuck in between modes, but then these are even simpler then your usual "One-Step Changer". Concept-wise they remind me of Bot Shots, minus the Bot Shots inability to stay in vehicle mode for more then a couple of seconds.

Soundblaster and Soundwave seem to be homages to Animated, being trucks with G1 Soundwave details on the front and speakers sitting around the place. Love me some Animated.

Scanning is easy enough. Sit the Matrix on top of your device's camera, then stand the toy in either mode on top. Scanning once unlocks the character and scanning again boosts the character's stats. All the characters can be unlocked in-game so most of the time you'll be boosting the stats.

    DSCN3343.jpg DSCN3344.jpg

Size-wise, these guys are tiny. About half as tall as your average Cyberverse figure and far smaller in vehicle mode then even your Bot Shots. Seen here are them compared to average Cyberverse, Bot Shot, Armada Minicon, Arms Micron and Generations Legends Microns. I knew they were small when I saw them in the store, but I never expected them to be quite this small. Definitely not worth $10 a pop.

They're even smaller then a Gokaiger Ranger Key!

In conclusion I can't really recommend these. They're tiny and over-priced and don't actually do enough for you in-game in order to justify purchasing them for that reason. If you like cute and quirky things or are a big Angry Birds fans, I can't fault you for buying a couple, but honestly I think they're really easy to skip. I'm sure they'll be a huge hit with the kiddies though, considering how amazingly popular Angry Birds are, so I expect they'll be stuffing stocking across the world this Christmas. I think its safe to say that we are far from the target audience for these guys.

These are currently Toys'R'Us exclusives at US Retail and have been available for about a month. I bought one (Soundwave) just to see how they worked, since I was playing the game, and I got hooked. The 2-packs are $9.99 and the single packs are $5.99. They are surprisingly addictive and fun. Also, if you use them right, they can significantly decrease your upgrade time in the game.

    1) Buy telepod
    2) Wait for "Hard" or "Very Hard" level to appear for that character, preferably one with lots of falling pillars.
    3) Play through the level, getting as many coins as you can from blowing up blocks, but don't try to beat the level. Let pillars hit you, don't use your special weapon, etc.
    4) Die before beating the level.
    5) Collect gold from level
    6) Use Telepod to refill health for free
    7) Repeat process

In this manner, you can quickly build up gold for upgrades. I like to use Soundwave, I have a level available for him and I can usually get around 1500 gold before I die.

Here are the Telepods available for purchase:

    Single-packs:
    Heatwave
    Lockdown
    Bumblebee
    Optimus Prime
    Soundwave
    Galvatron
    Megatron (Coming Soon)
    Thundercracker (Coming Soon)
    Grimlock (Coming Soon)

    Double-packs:
    Ultra Magnus vs Soundblaster
    Sentinel Prime vs Bludgeon
    Jazz vs Brawl (Coming Soon)

    Energon Racers 5-pack
    Energon Optimus Prime
    Energon Starscream
    Energon Grimlock
    Energon Lockdown
    Energon Soundwave

    Optimus Prime Racetrack:
    Ultimate Optimus Prime
    Ultimate Megatron

    Bumblebee playset (Coming Soon)
    Goldbite Grimlock
    High Octane Bumblebee

Unknown but logically coming at some point:
Energon Galvatron (Currently in game but no Telepod available)
    Arcee
    Skywarp
    Regular Starscream

No standard Starscream yet but who knows what the future holds?

Brawl looks like a brown Megatron/Bludgeon type (since they reuse the same character models).

Yeah, not my thing at all, I'd sooner buy the bearbrick transformers (and probably will lol) than any of these, let alone at 10 dollars a pop, at 5$ I might possibly consider one day at some point looking into thinking about getting one when its on sale, but otherwise I wash my hand of these.

No hard feelings to anyone does like them or has kids who like them, they just aren't for me and aren't cheap enough for me to buy out of sheer curiosity.

The Bumblebee Play set is available already here, do if I assume it's somewhere in US too.

It's supposed to be a Walmart exclusive here but from what I have seen, Walmart hasn't put out any of the ABTF stuff yet.
