Didn't see a pre-existing review thread, possibly due to this being a repaint of Swerve. Got this guy from The Chosen Prime (thanks, dude!) due to never expecting to see him on the pegs in the wild.

I was really looking forward to picking up Gears to help complete my season one minibots. Still am glad that I got him, and the Flanker/Eclipse mold is still one of my favorite Targetmasters, since I'm a sucker for aircraft TFs. That, and it makes a cool looking "winged" 3-barrell Gatling gun.

Like Swerve, he has decent knees and elbows, there's not much excess kibble that gets in the way (unlike Tailgate), and he can assume a cool kneeling and firing pose. His facial expression looks suitably upset or just unhappy at the world.

As for complaints, as I'm sure that Gears himself would find *something* to complain about: The thing that bugs me are the blatantly obvious paint apps that are missing from the face and chest. Just compare his pic on the package - there should be some red lines on either side of his face and a patch of gray on his chest just below his head, and neither are present. The ball joints at his hips don't have quite the range of motion that they should due to his thighs being square-ish instead rounded at the tops.

I guess it's the old saw about Hasbro always missing paint apps due to cost, but I'll deal with it since I'm not paying for the Tomy or the third party versions.

Gears, like Swerve, fits nicely in Metroplex's compartments, but he can't use any of Metro's gun emplacements in base or carrier mode due to his arms being too short.







So, recommended if you haven't got Cogwheel or if you are a G1 Generations-Classics completionist.

 

Psychoshi had a go at using Photoshop to correct the problems with Gears' head.... and did a damm fine job.

 

I still don't get why he has Brawn's head.

 

  He doesn't have Brawns' head...he just has a smaller version of his own head with missing paint apps

 

If the head were molded in red and the silver areas painted on, he would probably be fine. I'm still gonna grab him if I see him though.

Rare that a repaint has _less_ paint. So much on the targetmaster.

 

I'm on the fence because of the lack of red on his noggin, it just doesn't make him Gears, just him and Brawn's love child maybe?

 

I don't think the third one is feasible due to transformation.

Definitely wish the 2nd was the reality though.

No.... but there might be scope for a 3P company to produce a faceplate that clips over the existing head & shoulders.

 

I seriously hope this happens. The fact we got a new Gears figure in G1 style and the odd head is really the big thing hurting it. (Package art doesn't help much either showing a full on G1 version of him)

 

It's a minor point but Gears' instructions are coloured wrong: they're Decepticon Purple instead of Autobot red

 

Just dont tell cliffjumper

 

Would have been nice to have had red on Cliffjumper's side and purple on Supressor's

 

Randomly stumbled across this guy at Target today and I absolutely love him. I've never had a chance to fiddle with Swerve so he was a totally new experience for me. I really, really like how he turned out. The original Gears was my very first Transformer ever and it's fantastic to have such a nice update. Kinda wish he had a more toy accurate head, though.

 

Picked this guy up today and haven't unpacked him (going to a friend), but he looks great! If this is the only CHUG Gears we get for a while, I'm cool with it... When I get my own he'll proudly stand with his '84 brethren! I do wish the red paint apps on the head were present, but otherwise a good looking Gears!

 

Has it been confirmed by Hasbro that he will be repainted into Brawn ?

I got my POL in from BBTS and first thing after opening MP Wheeljack I opened Gears. Of course like others I wish the head was red. So on that note after freeing him from his prison the first order of business was this:



No where near as nice as many here can do but it looks so much better in red. I'm waiting for the paint to completely dry before transforming him but so far I like this figure. About what I expected since I have Swerve as well. Hips are a little stiff though. Overall well worth the money and another character down in the Autobot class of '84.
