Transformers Headmasters through Zone
11-7-09
Deltaprime
First off, I'd like to say that I'm well aware of the fact that I am lumping a whole lot of series into one review, but I have a perfectly rational and logical explanation for this, and it's this: Shut up.
Now then, following the end of Transformers season three here in America, we were treated to a pseudo fourth season that introduced the Headmasters (my personal favorite gimmick) and the Targetmasters. It was all a bit rushed, but the Japanese went a bit more in depth with all the different gimmicks out there and continued the G1 line for a considerably longer amount of time that America did. I'll summarize the basic plot of each line, then give the pros and cons.
HEADMASTERS-
The Headmasters series followed immediately after season three, replacing the American season four. We got alot of the same characters and alot of new ones too. Guys like Hardhead, Highbrow, Mindwipe, and Cerebros were given the main spotlight, and the series basically followed the same path G1 did, but with removable heads.
MASTERFORCE-
Masterforce was drastically different from the Headmasters series. We had people, yes people, becoming the Transformers and defending earth from the Decepticons. You can sort of compare it to Digimon season 4, where all the children got these statuets that allowed the to digivolve. On the Autobot's side, we got the Pretenders (actual robots) and Powermasters (Children in disguise!). On the Decepticon's side, we got the monster Pretenders, lead by Blackzarak and his master, Devil Z.
VICTORY-
Victory takes place after Masterforce, and once again, it introduces an entirely new cast of characters. The main plot of this series was that now the Decepticons were back, and they decided to attack other planets in the universe. The Autobots fight back by joining a with a bunch of other planets, including Earth, to fend them off. Oh yeah, this series gave us Liokaiser too. That was pretty cool. And Victory Saber. And Deathsaurus. And (gets hit in the head with a brick)
ZONE-
The shortest series in the franchise deserves my shortest review, so here it is. One episode of robots fighting. Oh, Predaking got sliced in two. Quote:

All no thanks of the writers who had Optimus Prime die in the 1986 movie and wait until towards the end of the 3rd season to bring him back. |

Alt. mode: Brakedown is a brown andgray Cybertronian dragster with transulusent yellow wheels, wind shield, and sword. Speaking of the sword, you can flip it out in this mode but that requires you take out his engine, plug in the cyber key and take it out, and place it back in. He also rolls well.
Robot mode: Brakedown carrys over his colors from his alt mode but with more gray . His possiblity is a bit dissapointing but then again a bot his age can't move (or drive) that well anyway. His wirsts(? or is that his forearm?) are on ball joints but should have been on hingje joints instead. His legs are on ball joints but can't move out very far because of the socket. His knee joints are fine. He can wield his sword but can't strike many poses once again due to age (or possiblity).
Overall: I give him 7/10 because I like his alt. mode Check the DBA web site. DO IT! |

PROS-
Headmasters- As some of you might already know, Headmaster Transformers have my favorite gimmick. However, this series also had Targetmasters. The show really wasn't too far off from the original G1 cartoon, so it wasn't that big of a leap going from G1 to Headmasters.
Masterforce- Masterforce had some good idea and the underlying theme that "if you believe in yourself, you too can be transformed" or something to that effect. It had an interesting concept, and some cool toys like the Pretenders as well.
Victory- Victory had some huge, very anime-esque robot designs. Just look at Deszarus (one of the coolest Emperors of Destruction, IMO) or Victory Leo. They all have impressive designs, and the toys reflect that.
Zone- Zone had Dai Atlas. Oh, and Predaking got sliced in two.
CONS-
Headmasters- The dubbing was a bit strange at parts, and the casual American fan will definately get confused if he watches this series. The characters in the Japanese show are so different from the American "Rebirth" miniseries.
Masterforce- Although it had interesting concepts, it had virtually an entirely new cast of characters. Sure, we got an Optimus Prime look-alike, but other than that, it was all new guys, mostly humans.
Victory- Jean and Cain (the two main characters) are a bit too friendly..... Also, the human-robot relationships were kind of weird. I mean, Star Saber was apparently Jean's stepfather or something. Strange, but I guess Japan has done weirder......
EDIT: It wasn't Jean and Cain, it was Akira (a dude who looked like Dora the Explorer) and Cain.
Zone- The series was incredibly short. Oh, and Predaking got sliced in two.
Next time I review the Beast Wars 2 and Beast Wars Neo, so stay tuned! Quote:
