Hi all. So a awhile back a friend and I started a little attempt at a G1 inspired comic. Basically the "last" Transformer story. We decided to bypass most of the regular/alternate story lines. We wanted to keep with the original G1 cartoon and tell a tale from that world. A lost episode if you will.

We started the process by going through MANY episodes, saving stills from all that might be useful. Anyone who is familiar with that show though, knows just how bad that art could be. Some detail was great--and then it just steadily got worse and worse. But the idea was simple; screen cap, crop/cut out image, place into another background and tell the story. And thus our comic began.

But it didn't get too far. We never got the story in. We only made it a few pages in. And then we stopped it all and she moved and the story sat. Skip forward oh, two years or so...and I came upon it again. So I thought more of it. And started bringing it to life again. But I wanted to change it. I went to school for graphic arts and I decided I wanted to make this more, better. So I went back to the beginning and remade what we had. Edited some panels completely, added in a story finally and remade every single panel from scratch, relined, recolored, more detail. So now, while not as G1 cartoon looking--I'm having more fun working on this. But as a one man job, it goes at a much slower pace. But it's now a labor of love..so, on it goes.

And now for an idea i've had since the beginning and finally got around to putting it in..We all know how the original cartoons had those rejoiners..and since I was bringing back G1 I wanted to open with that. So I took the screen shot of the original:

To the finished piece with my updated line work/detailing and my friend Paul Heal's amazing colors:

and the time I met Peter Cullen and he read some of the story in Prime's voice for me and signed both the combined graphic novel print as well as the poster of the final page.

Now the pages are slightly out of order..just placing them in here for now..No script etc. Stuff with Megs is flashback, stuff with just Prime is ongoing.

Here's a more detailed account of how I basically go through each page..if I'm using direct stills. Some of the stuff I just have to make up--But, the general process goes something like this:

Step 1: Find a scene/still that I want to use for the story..Or, see a still that I make fit into the story. Either option is open really. Here I have Megatron from the movie doing his "Such heroic nonsense" line..and I wanted to use that but with Prime. Well, because of the shots they used, there wasn't just one full on Megs shot--so I had to pan 2 frames and then splice them together into one.

Step 2: Megs is now one single image, but now I have to get rid of Ironhide and recreate some of Meg's leg. I don't just paint over--although, I guess with the final version I could, but no, I use the clone tool to match the texture of the original still when I fill it in..

Step 3: I wanted Prime to be under the gun, and saw this shot earlier on of Prime on his back after being blasted, so the angle worked well enough so pop that in there..

Step 4: Rescale Prime as his head is directly in front of camera, needed to be much larger.

Step 5: I wanted to get his face more in line with Megs gun, so just flipped him over.

Step 6: Begin relining/redrawing Megatron. One advantage with photoshop is the straight line tool. I vary the thickness of the line at different angles etc to give it different weight depending on relation to the camera. One of the things I try my best to do is not leave out details, which was so prevalent in the G1 cartoon..

Step 7: Place Prime back in, extend Megatron's legs, begin lining Prime some as well.

Step 8: Detailing. Using the circle tool, made Meg's barrel a nice sharp circle instead of hand drawn.

    Step 9: More detailing..I think?

Step 10: As I got closer to being finished with it, I was noticing that the perspective on the original gun was off, so working with layers and vanishing points, I decided to redo the gun and make it a bit more balanced.

Step 11: More detailing..trying to get it as accurate as possible.

Step 12: Detailing..connecting the dots..or, well, the circles, to make it one complete piece and connecting it to Meg's arm.

Step 13: Added finishing touches to Megs, on the gun, his mouth..and got a line in my head I thought of using for this.

Step 14: Start Prime, added detail, gave him his chest lamps, etc..made his lines much thicker as he's closer.

Step 15: As stated previously, I try to make these guys as real as I can, and I noticed Prime's head was drawn poorly in the original still from what it should be, so, again made my own correcting some errors.

Step 16: Continuation of details..Trying to be as exact as I can.

Step 17: Filled in basic colors for Prime after basic line work is finished.

Step 18: Colored in Megatron and added a properly angled background plate.

Step 19: More additions..to place it back in the "area" this is all happening in, I added a few of the pillars from Megatron's weapon platform to make it look like it's all happening in same place.

Step 20: Selecting the parts to work with, adjusted the sky to be a darker space, deeper heavier blues, and made the buildings and structures in the background grittier more banged up.

Step 21: Working more on connecting backgrounds, I'm going to add a lot of the electric pink shock effect in, so I wanted to make sure they would connect properly.

Step 22: Electrical field now added, ready for final renders.

Step 23: As base colors were already painted in, now adding shadows, reflections, highlights etc to make the images pop more and not be flat. G1 was good with this at times, and then not at all others..

Step 24: Meg's lighting effects are now done, started Primes, and changed up the dialog some.

Step 25: Added pink highlights to Megatron to add effect.

Step 26: Went back in with line tool and liquify tool to ding up Meg's some, give it some battle damage from his fight.

Step 27: Went back into Prime's lines and added some damage to him as well.

Step 28: Added highlights, reflections and shadows to Prime as well and some pink.

    FINISHED!

And that's pretty much the work that goes into just about ever panel of this book.

By the way--feel free to comment. Specially people who are good writers/storytellers who might have some ideas/suggestions. Or anyone who's good at photoshop coloring to add effects and make the colors more gritty..Or..just comment.
