Just a questinog about the transformation are both his head and his tail on his back?

I see that his hands form the neck so where do the dino head and tail come from?

I don't see enought bulk on the back for both of them to be there.

Looks to me like the hallow tail folds out into a wide U shape on his back which his dino head lays against.
My question is, why is part of the inner ring on his knee missing?

*edit* On second look, it looks like the tail folds up on his back and the dino head simply folds into the body.

    That's it!
And for the ring, it turns up to the upper part of the leg, the missing part is in order to match with the waist.
And thank you all for your posts!!!

This is very good work - The transformation is very innovative, the tyrannosaur form is suitably badass, and his robot form is an excellent blend of brutish brawn and athletic agility - he looks like he could really move if he needed to.

The only criticism I've got is that he looks like he has a bit of a pelvic thrust going on, but that's it. Other than that, he looks great.

Edit: And the fact that we can figure Grimlock's (and Optimus's) transformations is a sign of excellent design.

This is an amazing piece of work. Innovative versions of characters are always something that grabs my attention. I can;t wait to see how he combine with Optimus!

You can always look at toys for inspiration, and look at how some of them are engineered. If you get an understanding of engineering, even a basic one, it can help you visualize new transformation sequences.

When I draw a new design, I always think of how much mass there is to work with in the vehicle mode. You have to be able to have stuff fit into the vehicle in some way. This is where hollow legs, arms, or torsos can help, so you can fold things in on themselves. Extra panels can help fill in any gaps that might appear from using hollow pieces. Some Transformers "grow", from a tiny vehicle to a huge robot by cleverly using their mass, e.g. Animated Lockdown.

I'm not too good at explaining this kind of stuff, but I hope this helped at least a little bit. :)
