This is a work in progress. Here I've just finished the design for the entire body. My goal was to create Transformers that are both modern yet retro and contain personality. I wanted a lot of the shapes to be angular which is a throw-back to G1's blockiness and I wanted to stray away from the movie's explosion of metal. My design may look that way but it isn't. My original idea was to create TFs to be mecha-esque but as I began designing Optimus that later shifted away as I wanted my designs to be quite human. Somehow I came to the idea that I wanted my Transformers to be "robots in disguise" and they are warriors that are actually wearing these vehicles like armour much like "shellformers" The armour in this case for Optimus is the most solid-looking part for the body whereas everything else has more detail. The idea behind the design of the limbs is that I got a sheet of metal, cut it up lengthways then arranged them into a 3D object. Optimus here is supposed to have an air of royalty. This is achieved through not only through his pose but through the design of his armour. Like the head design in the previous post it's supposed to resemble a crown which symbolises his leadership. The details seen in that post are still present but haven't been added yet (see that post for more details). I wanted his armour to resemble a king's robe so there's armour trailing down his thighs and down his back as well as armour puffing out on his shoulders. There's a wheel on each shoulder with the other four at the top of each thigh, lights on the collar from the vehicle mode, windows on the chest and the grille on the abdomen to nod towards Optimus' iconic G1 look. Unlike others though, the smokestacks come out of the arms as part of his biology. Of course this is a WIP. Right now I'm sort out the proportions and the shape of the lines. Finally I want my TFs to look alien as well. It may not be heavily apparent on Optimus but it will show on other TF's I'll create. I'm going to create a blog where I'll post my designs. If anyone is interested and wants me to recreate a bot then send me a message.
Maybe a character other than Optimus, but with his role. Like Alpha Trion, and he could be dark blue with either light blue or orange. Just my opinion. Looks great!
Very regal looking. It's a different take on Optimus, but I really like it. I think it'd be cool if you added lines under his eyes, like you have on the original head sketch.
I plan to. So far I've finalised the shape of the lines and have nearly finished blocking in the colour. Last will be the details.
I like the idea of him having a very different look, try pushing the silhouette so he has a distinct shape. So you can recognize this as the Prime in your set of guys.
