    Hi guys,

Things have come to a point that I'm embarking on the largest project I've ever attempted. I doubt I'll even do anything in the future that can match this in terms of scale and complexity. As it were, I really want to see it complete at least by middle of 2014 and I'm putting all my energies to bring it to fruition.

Past experience have shown that accepting requests and ideas for new Shapeways stuff, although great for fans and friends because they'll get to see the stuff they want being made, is really distracting for me and I get delayed from working on the things I want. Don't get me wrong, I love to create stuff for you guys. But this is going to be my magnum opus and I've decided this is the season to complete it.

Hence, until further notice, I'll be taking NO MORE REQUESTS, regardless of how minor. The current models on my shop will still be up of course, and you might see small, random things from me from time to time. But nothing else until this leviathan of a project is done and put to production.

    Sincerely,

    Ariel Lemon

    What is Shapeways?
Basically, Shapeways is a company that takes 3D CAD files from designers and puts them up on their website. The public will be able to order these designs and Shapeways will print them out in 3D and ship them worldwide. These prints can come in different materials, each with their own characteristics which can influence every design. The advantage is that you have the freedom to create shapes which cannot be done through conventional molding processes, and everything is made to order so there is no messy inventory handling.

Check out their website to learn more!

    Feasibility
I receive a lot of great suggestions from fans here, many which made it to a producible stage, like Sentinel Prime's hands and DOTM Starscream's weapon set. However, I have also received suggestions which are not feasible too, for a number of reasons. I will briefly list out my criteria for how I pick my projects. Please read through and it will help you refine your next big Shapeways idea!

    Scale:
Shapeways material is expensive, so ideas wanting an entire replacement arm or leg for a deluxe sized figure is going to cost you about $60. Ideas for smaller objects such as heads, weapons and the like will be more suitable.

    Marketability:
I get suggestions to design a character specific add-on for a rare figure, such as a con-exclusive or a G1 toy. Unless the add-on is adaptable for other figures, it does not make economic sense to work on a design that sells only 2 pieces. It is better to have ideas for 'current' figures, like movie figures or recent reissues, for instance.

    Referencing:
It greatly helps my design process if I have the physical toy in hand to take measurements from. If the figure is obscure or out of production, I will be designing blind. Again, ideas for recently released figures will best.

    Partsforming:
This is more of a personal bias. I prefer whatever add on elements I design should have a place to store in both modes, no parts forming. If the Shapeways part is a replacement for a limb, the new part should also transform and fit neatly in all modes as well.

Stop stealing our customers, dammit. The recent influx of people trying to jump on this bandwagon....argh....:(

:lol  anyways, nice job, but how big and how much? Also, 2mm diameter ball joints? Good luck with that, they better not have any shaft at all of that'll snap quite easily.

Those are cool designs. Looking forward to getting them printed. :)

With an attitude like that, you should reconsider why you make models. New people joining in on the Shapeways revolution is great, because it should push you and others as a modeler/artist/customizer to become even better. :)  Ultimately, you should have fun in making and sharing you work in this fandom. That is what will make us grow.

Thanks for all your support, guys. I'll update this thread the instant I get the results from SW.

It's Ariel's Customs on Shapeways, but there's nothing on it yet. Apologies.

Hey Treadshot! I'm glad to see your comment and look to your advice.

Well, I maybe stealing customers (or not) :lol  but I believe having a lot of players in the industry leads to better choices for the buyers and healthy business growth in general. Also, I like to see artists in constant friendly struggles, it's the easiest way to improve ourselves. Besides, I have the skills, so why not put it to use?

That being said, these Thuggers are really tiny. They stand approximately 4cm tall (1.6") minus the back cannons. This is a sacrifice I have to make to allow them to fit into the chest cavity without relying on mods to Soundwave himself.

The 2mm dia. ball joints is surely an area of doubt and I want to explore the feasibility when the first print arrives. I had done a preliminary test print of ball joints of different sizes, and the 2mm ones *could* work with proper stem and socket design. A touch of super glue coating helps a lot too, but I hope buyers won't have to resort to that.

In terms of costs, total WSF material costs about $5++. I like transparency in pricing, but I would like to make some profit from this as well, so I'll openly state I'll charge (maybe?) $6 per figure if they ever come to print.

I have tested a Fremble set for Soundwave, and a Reject set. Fremble, with 4mm ball joints, is durable as hell. Reject, with 2mm ball joints, is utterly scary to work with. It's so fragile due to 2mm ball joints needing 1mm shafts, which are really easy to snap. I would say go with something along the lines of 4mm ball joints, as they seem much better for durability's sake.

I'm printing my Reject and Fremble molds each for...$6 iirc. I wouldn't go much higher than that, but that just me. Still, good luck.

And V, relax, I was being sarcastic. :)

Funny, because I luuurve your wallet long time :lol
Kidding, in fact, I'm trying to make them as cheap as possible so that people can fulfill their dream of having thug armies marching across their desks...

Thanks man. I'm using Rhino3D, pretty good for NURBS modelling as well as low poly stuff.

    Thanks!

I looked over my meshes again and I'm glad to report most of the structural joints (such as the legs) use 3mm balls with 2 mm stems, and the smaller joints are 2.5mm balls with 2mm stems. Slightly larger than what I originally claimed. The only dicey part will be the neck joint which is 2mm; in the end I may have to remove head posability, who knows?

    Thanks for the tip!

oh wow. that's gonna be great filler for soundwave's boobs :D

dunno if all that detail will print though. i think someone made a similar type of thing before but they turned out so teensy that all the lovely greebles went to waste.

not-quite-edit : yup, here we go
designed for the same mold and everything, and shapeways got the general form alright, but the little things look a bit ill defined.

actual-edit: oh wait. are these for G1 soundwave or WFC soundwave? my brain is screaming to me that it's wfc because of the alt mode orientation, but now that i check again i don't see any mention of that >__>
