So FB, I've got a shapeways modelling related question, because I've suddenly wanted to get into the Shapeways thing too :x I figured since you do such amazing work with Shapeways you'd be one of the best people to ask.

I want to make a Nether Portal from Minecraft ( http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20120111120655/minecraft/images/9/9b/Netherportal.png ), but I want to make the top layer of blocks removable so I can slide in or out a clear piece of plastic for when my portal is active or inactive.

I've already figured out that I want it to use pegs, but when it comes to printing, do i need to make the parts on a sprue, or if i just place them close together in the model file will they print just fine? And if I do need a sprue, how do I go about making one?

I think the Shapeways folks are going to take a short break the coming few weeks, cuz my package will only arrive next year :(

    For now, we shalt wait...

You can place the pieces together and they'll print just fine. Having sprues on them is more for the Shapeways crew to know the pieces belong in one set and prevents pieces going missing. I just use simple rods to connect the pieces; diameter of 1.5 mm for the best compromise in security and material use.

Hope this helps and good luck!

idk what program you're using (I use sketchup) but to answer your question you really only need the sprue if you have small parts that could get lost in the cleaning process. As far as sprues go, you don't need an elaborate frame like you would expect from a model kit. FB and myself (along w/ others too I assume) will typically just use a small (1-2mm thick) cylinder to connect parts that are about 2-3mm apart. It's not a lot of material and it keeps the parts together. The end user just has to cut the excess material off and optionally sand it smooth and when more material == higher costs for printing, the less waste the better.

Hope that helps and good luck :)

@FB: When would the FOC Soundwave gun be available as well as the Thugmeisters? Also, do you happen to have some alt-mode pics for the thugmeisters? Thanks. ;)

Heys! I don't know what you are referring to by the FOC Soundwave gun, but I have the pretty cool Sonic Spike Projector available since a few weeks ago. I apologise if I didn't make that public enough...I think it slipped under a lot of radars :)

You can get the SSP here: http://www.shapeways.com/model/794731/

For the Thugmeister 'alt modes', I'm not comfortable with revealing them until I've got them in hand and make sure they work, otherwise the sneak previews will end up being an embarrassment. The good news is I've gotten an update from Shapeways that my samples will be arriving end of this week, so we should have something to look forward to in the New Year :D

Yup! That's the one... I looked at your SW store and I may have just missed it, which is why I asked. We'll have to wait for the alt modes then. Based on the shapes of the legs, I assume that it would definitely fit inside the "disc" chamber. ;)

    :lol ... Shapely legs... :lol

I'm sure they're very limber... :lol

I can't wait to get them... The FOC dics sets are not that well articulated. I still give them props for the design, just not quite good enough... Unlike the FB designs... :D

I hope the new Voyager Thuggers will work out as you planned em, and I hope you'll continue with the birds, the cat and the Autobot counterparts for Blaster.

    Hey guys!
The Shapeways package is here and golly am I excited. I've been looking at prototypes all morning...
The Thugmeister is assembled and works great, but there are a few quirks to work out before it's ready. I guess you have to wait a few days for that. In the meantime, here's a shot:

Yea, the Thugmeister is 2/3 the height of FOC Rumble. He stands roughly equal to Nightstick, and he can hold Cyberverse accessories very well!

Also, I've got the Deicidium in hand and boy does it look tasty. Less edits are needed for this model but it will take me awhile yet to fix (maybe 1 day?). For now, here's another shot:

Printed in Black and Violet Purple Polished Strong Flexible. No changes made. Doesn't the blade glow...?

Stay tuned on this thread or on my Facebook page for updates! These coming few days will be exciting! Happy Holidays everyone!

I'm on pins and needles for that Deicidium!

Edit: And bought! Along with Skyquake and Dreadwing's guns, and Knock Out's tools.

I also grabbed a Star Saber from lorddragonmaster. Damn, expensive order!

Ariel, if you make one of those like MTMTE Rewind, I will be extremely tempted...

Hey FB! Just got my Christmas order in. Extremely impressed so far, though not everything is built yet. Few things to do before I can take those pictures I talked about though; some parts missing from two of the models (three fingers and a thumb from Ironhide hands, base of a thumb for Evil Sentinel hands; gonna get in touch with shapeways), need to buy some dye still, and trying to work out the best way to sand different things down to fit.

EDIT: one finger and thumb from Ironhide; I can't count, apparently.

Thanks firehawc! Do let me know how those turn out!

I've been reading up on the backstory for Rewind, and I kinda like his character... ;)
And Eject's pretty cool as well...

Question, do they have any characteristic weapons like how Rumble has his piledrivers and Frenzy has his drills?

Oops, I'm sorry to hear you have problems with your order. Yes, approaching Shapeways customer service is the best way to get replacements, but do let me know if you face any problems with them. Can't wait for you to share some awesome pictures! And good luck!
