Treadshot's Shapeways Thread

Treadshot A1's Shapeways Thread

Hi! I'm Treadshot A1, and i'm a designer over on Shapeways. I've always been interested in toys ever since I was a child, especially Transformers. Now, my focus is on improving on the toys we have and filling the holes in collections everywhere. From weapon kits to complete figures, my goal is to make playing with toys fun once more.

What is Shapeways? And what do you do?

Shapeways is a company specialising in 3D printing, the technology of turning a computer model into a real object. The idea is that Shapeways takes a model on a computer and creates an exact physical duplicate of it in a material of your choosing. My job is to create the computer models which are submitted to Shapeways, both designing new parts and actually crafting a virtual model.

And the point is...?

...twofold. To take over the universe and to make toys that much cooler!

When did we ever need a reason for overkill?

Shock Rifles

"Charged fury. The Shock Rifles fired bursts of energy and electricity, switching at will. Energy pierced armour, the gaping holes left behind perfect for electric pulses to fry internal circuits. The weapon's frame carried two static blades and a single highly conductive blade, both for slicing and delivering electric shocks up close. Due to the high power consumption for three outputs, the weapon's frame included room for an additional battery. Devoted to offense over defense, the Shock Rifles carried almost no excess armour beyond its casing, relying on combining two Shock Rifles to wipe out enemies before the weapon and its user could be damaged. Battlefield testing reported a highly destructive weapon with quick refueling capabilities, though its powerful combined form could rarely be sustained."

Specs:

-5mm Handle
-7mm free space in front of handle
-5.12cm long (to end of barrel)
-6.26cm long (to tip of blade)

Additional Features:

-2x Adapter (Shaldoll-style, jack) per Shock Rifle
-1x Adapter (Shaldoll-style, socket) per Shock Rifle

-2x Adapter (Shaldoll-style, jack) per Shock Battery

-1x Adapter (HG 1/144 Gundam AGE-2, chest connector) per Shock Rifle, removable
-1x Handle (HG 1/144 Gundam Kits) per Shock Rifle, interchangeable with 5mm handle

Kestrel Cleanser

"Defined divinity. The Kestral Cleanser fired single blasts of condensed energy through its tapered barrel with lethal force. Each blast's density provided significant knockback upon impact, adding to the damage from each hit. Behind the tapered barrel, the weapon's entire bulk was devoted to storing energy with minimal weight to sustain its high energy blasts. The Kestral Cleanser carried almost no armour beyond its structural shell, relying on the weapon's power and moderate rate of fire to repel enemies. Battlefield testing reported a weapon that could neutralise enemies in one shot, though its moderate rate of fire left it vulnerable to swarm tactics."

Specs:

-5mm Handle
-6.1mm free space in front of handle
-5.67cm long
-3mm bar (under Barrel, front)

Additional Features:

-3x Handles (Left, Right, Top) for HG 1/144 Gundam Kits
-Adapter (Underside, behind Barrel) for HG 1/144 Shaldoll Custom

FOC Onslaught Upgrade Kit

Update 24/03/13: Hinge Blaster v1.5

Changes:
  • New Hinge Blaster barrel design
  • Increased diameter for increased strength

Thanks to everyone for the feedback on this kit!

The Hinge Blaster has been redesigned and features a new barrel, to allow it to function better as a hinge in Onslaught's vehicle mode.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A common problem with FOC Onslaught is for the green blaster he comes packaged with to get stressed. The connections on his vehicle mode (to his arm) force the plastic further than it can take. That, and let's face it:

Onslaught isn't Onslaught without twin huge cannons!

The FOC Onslaught Upgrade Kit provides fixes to both these issues. A new Hinge Blaster and two Hinges relieve plastic stress with a new attachment point while Twin Cannons provide the firepower and silhouette Onslaught deserves.

TFP FE Arcee Blasters

A set of blasters for Arcee which actually cover her hands. The blasters cover her arms using the ports on the sides of her arms to secure themselves. The existing blades can attach to the underside of the blasters.

The blasters attach in vehicle mode as boosters, remaining attached to her arms (requiring a mistranformation of the arms). They can also be attahed as blasters in a properly transformed vehicle mode, using the peg on Arcee's blades.

TFP Cliffjumper "Stranzer" Weapons Kit

Stranzer is the ultimate in anti-'Con technology. Basically an entire armory in one weapon, the Stranzer is suited for combat at any distance. You can fight up close, hacking and slashing through 'Cons. You can blast them at mid-range the Stranzer's built-in blaster, and enemies far away get a nasty surprise when a knife flies right into their optic sensors.

"Avasor" - Breacher FlipSword

"A short range weapon with 3 modes, Avasor is Breacher's answer to 'Cons up close. Equipped as a blaster, Breacher looses off bolts with Avasor faster than the Valiphas can auto-fire. A deft flick of the arm brings out Avasor's bayonet form, a sword locking in place along the length of the arm. One more change and Avasor shows its sword form; held at the hilt or half way up the weapon, the weight of Avasor's blade makes it as much a bludgeoning tool as it is a sharp edge.

-------------------------------------------------

"Valipha" - Breacher Cannon

"A special operations variant of Breacher's cannon, Valipha delivered energy bolts silently. The cannon switched power for speed, with a camera lens disguised as a scope to ensure every bolt went straight.

Add in a missile launcher capable of firing twin missiles simultaneously and Valipha morphed into artillery, letting it rain warheads.

Valipha disguised one last feature. The back of the cannon didn't store ammunition, nor did it weigh enough to act as a bludgeoning tool. It held a c-clip, changing Valipha into a handheld blaster. Sacrificing accuracy for the freedom to fire in all directions, Valipha's handheld form was suited to close up fights, where aim wasn't such an issue."

Cartridge Robot Beast

When you need proof that big things do actually come in small packages, you call Cartridge Robot Beast. The heavy-hitter of the Cartridge Robots, twin shoulder-mounted cannons augment Beast's powerful physique. Whether he's blasting away at foes from a distance, or up close smashing your face in, Beast is all about hitting hard every time.

TFP FE Starscream Fusion Boosters

What if Starscream actually led the 'Cons? He'd have twin Fusion Boosters, that's what. And they'd attach in Jet mode to make him fly even faster!

When you let Starscream finally have the power he desires, what could be better than rubbing it in his former master's face by giving him twin Fusion Cannons? Three missiles either side was never enough to really obliterate the remaining 'Bots. A fusion cannon on each arm...that's twice the firepower that Megatron had!

-------------------------------------------------

TFP Cliffjumper "Evala" Weapon Kit

How could Cliffjumper be left without a huge cannon?

The Evala weapon kit should set things right. Whereas the Stranzer focused on versatility, the Evala does one thing and it does one thing well. It blows stuff up. The Evala weapon kit focuses on long range combat, engaging 'Cons before they even know you're in range. The Evala Cannon wipes out enemy units before you step into sensor range, and survivors meet a nasty fate when the Evala Impaler slices right through their spark chamber.

The Ailon - Legion Vehicon Jet Upgrade Kit turns you Legion Vehicon toy into a flying car, with new wings and a new nosecone! Ailon attaches to Legion Vehicon using the existing 3mm connectors, no modifications required!

"Zirca" Legion Vehicon Drill Upgrade Kit

Ever wanted to army build Vehicons? Just couldn't justify buying multiples of the same toy? What about if you could turn your Vehicon into a drill?

The Zirca Upgrade set is designed to convert a Legion Vehicon figure from a sports car to a drill-tank. The conversion is entirely reversible; all parts attach and detach via existing 3mm ports on the figure. The Zirca kit inludes a drill designed to fit over the front of Vehicon's car mode, along with two treads to attach to the sides of the car. The treads are designed to plug into the arms whole, instead of being split between the arm and leg to avoid modifying the stock figure in any way. The Zirca treads have been made to allow Vehicon's vehicle mode to roll using the existing wheels after conversion.

GMB-400 Quakeburst Exceed

Space fights were the home of the Exceeds, ever since the debut of the Sabretooth, but ground warfare was a different story. Flying within the atmosphere, the forward facing guns couldn't provide the cover fire the EFF needed. What was needed was a ground support unit, what they got from Madorna Workshop was the GMB-400 Quakeburst Exceed.

A heavy artillery support unit, Quakeburst had the sole purpose of blasting holes in enemy forces. Often fighting behind the mobile suit infested front lines, the Quakeburst's onboard sensor array allowed it to fire between formations, and height-adjustable cannons let the sky rain cannon fire. Twin forward-facing blasters made sure the Quakeburst was never caught off-guard, rapid fire being their main use.

SGW-037 Cloudlash Exceed

"The SGW-039 Cloudlash Exceed was the only Exceed to not have been developed exclusively by Madorna Workshop. The Cloudlash was a special variant created by Bisidian, under the orders of Asemu Asuno. Modified from the EFF's dragon Exceed, the Cloudlash features a huge improvement in speed by mounting four additional thrusters, scavenged from damaged EFF and Vagan mobile suits. A weapon upgrade in the form of it's Laeva Blade-Whip was also included, allowing the suit to easily cut through enemy MS."

--------------------------------------------------

GCA-150 Sabretooth Exceed

"Creating the G-Exes had been a huge step forward in repelling the Vagan. As a compliment to the AGE-1, the suit excelled, being able to match the Gundam's speed and firepower. With a suit almost as powerful as the Gundam, there was finally a testbed for new technology intended for the AGE-2, without risking modifying the Gundam, the best defense against the Vagan. With this in mind, Madorna Factory set about creating the "Exceed"s, optional equipment for the G-Exes to test technology which would later be adopted into the AGE-2.

The first of Madorna Factory's creations was the GCA-150 Sabretooth Exceed. A field test of transforming technology, the Sabretooth's main goal was to gather battle data on the effectiveness of a blaster being used as a jet's nosecone. In addition, the Sabretooth packed 3 remote-controlled Fang Bits, powerful blasters for swarm tactics, equipped with the ability to generate a beam saber at close range.

The Sabretooth Exceed also acted to test whether units could remotely attach and detach weaponry in space. Attaching a Sabretooth to the G-Exes mid-flight was aided by new onboard sensor arrays and advanced camera technology (disguised at the Sabretooth's "cockpit"). The Sabretooth itself could be set on autopilot find G-Exes or act as a manned support fighter."

"After the success of the Sabretooth as EFF cover fire, Madorna Workshop was secretly contracted to make a second Exceed, one that would increase EFF firepower to levels not seen before. The result was the GFB-070 Strikecharge Exceed, a unique mesh of stealth and strength with a sense of humour all its own."

Sentry Sidearms

"Reliable destruction. The Sentry Sidearms fight with energy blasts at range and light up a spiked energy blade up close. Controlling distance, the Sentry Blaster exploits its rapid fire capabilities to keep enemies at bay, while the Sentry Blade gores enemies foolish enough to approach. Made for infantry, the Sentry Sidearms are armoured, self-contained units. Only two cables on the Sentry Blaster are exposed, required to recharge the Sentry Blade and power the weapons' combined form. Battlefield testing reported a weapon with low power consumption and high reliability, though the Sentry Blaster's armour did not last long as a shield at close range."

Strafe Jetpack (Accessory for Kre-O)

"The Strafe Jetpack was made exclusively for Kreon minifigures. Combining firepower with a close-range staff and the ability to become airborne, the Strafe Jetpack allowed units to carry weaponry conveniently across the battlefield, ready for a fight.

The Strafe Gatling gun's high rate of fire, combined with its inherently high recoil allowed units to temporarily achieve flight. Though more of a speed boost than true liftoff, the sudden burst of speed backed by exploding shells redefined the word 'intimidating'.

Cartridge Robot FR Upgraded

Developed for Cybertron Soundwave, Cartridge Robot FR was the first Cartridge design. The original FR design paved the way for Ejector/Rewinder, Ravager and Beast, each sporting improvements from FR. It's about time FR got the upgrade it needed, to compete with the newer Cartridge Robots.

-------------------------------------------------

Cartridge Robot Ejector Upgraded

Cartridge Robot Ejector Upgraded improves on the original Ejector's articulation, with extra shoulder articulation, repositioned knee joints and lengthened upper legs. Cartridge Robot Ejector Upgraded also sports a new head sculpt.

-------------------------------------------------

Aevira - Cyclone Scythe

"Aevira on display was a marvel to behold. Nothing more than a piece of art, the effectiveness of Aevira in battle was little more than a joke. Many attempted to use Aevira, only one ever succeeded. Unwilling to pass on the techniques to wield it, Aevira's owner became known for being unwieldy yet effective. How Aevira can ever be an effective weapon is still beyond general comprehension. The only piece of information to be revealed by its user was its three parts. Splitting into the Aevira Spear, Aevira Celestaff and Aevira Celesabre, one could not be sure whether its owner preferred combat or creative wordplay. The combined form was even renamed the Aevira Crescythe, further cementing Aevira's reputation as art.

-------------------------------------------------

Legends Hot Spot Ladder

A small accessory, but one that i couldn't go without. I found my legends Hot Zone and i just thought...well, that's all well and good, but it's not a fire truck! Hotspot must be a Fire Truck!

This ladder aims to make Hot Zone slightly more believable as an actual fire rescue vehicle. With an adjustable ladder and a water gun/blaster on the end, he can both put out fires and blast those pesky 'Cons.

That all looks very nice. Only thing i'm not really digging is how the faces look kind of flat.
Except for "Paranoid"'s face that is.
That Bayonet looks awesome too. Can't really say much about that last piece, as i haven't seen the Wheel and Caster model yet.
As for your parental units disagreeing, did you explain to them how it works? You don't actually sell these things, you give Shapeways a license to sell them and they pay you royalties.

Rather cool. I know designing heads can be a bear, which is why I've allocated a separate CAD file just to store my designs for them. I'm making them as modular as possible, with different styles of eyes, visor, faceplates, helmets and crests etc, and assembling them into new heads as and when I need to.

Also, you'll want to alter those clips and shafts; the bars are 3mm diameter, not 2.

Hmm, yeah, some are a bit flat. I'm going completely off G1 drawings on TF Wiki for most of these, but without exact dimensions i'm kinding guessing at the exact measurements. I think after they print they should look better, let's just keep hoping.

Glad you like the Bayonet! The Wheel and Caster model is exactly what it sounds like; it's the circular saw sans the saw teeth. It's just a base from which to build spinny things.

Hmm, i think the problem they have with it is that you have to give SW your credit card/bank account details so they can pay you. They don't like giving away information, apparently, which is fair enough. If enough people show interest here, then i might go see if they'll reconsider.

Hmm, that is a good idea. Modular heads. Sadly Sketchup isn't quite willing to allow modular construction.

Clips and shafts will be altered to 4-3 measurements, when Sketchup stops throwing a fit.

Sure it is - just put the sections of the head that you want to keep seperate into groups or components and then you can mix and match easily.

Heh, i know. Components. But the problem is, if you use components in Sketchup, and then export as a Collada file for SW, there is a glitch in the upload system of SW's site that prevents models to be uploaded, if they involved importing stuff in Sketchup, regardless whether you explode the components or not.

I have posted on teh SW forums, and am yet to get a response. Hopefully they will either fix it or tell me how to get around it. I currently have figured out one way, and that is to export as an STL, but since i have no access to STL software, i need someone to change my .dae files to stl's, which can be a painstakingly long waiting game, and also very annoying for both me and the person helping me, as i have a lot of models.

Once you explode the component try going in Window>Model info>Statistics and hit 'Purge unused' otherwise it keeps a record of the component - Maybe after you do that it will export and upload properly?

That may be why the Collada files i send keep bouncing.
Edit: Nope. Tried what Rodentus prime suggested, still says that it can't be validated.

I found a source for ruby scripts for Sketchup that allow exporting as STL files. I've yet to try it, but when I do tonight, I will post the results, if any.

By the way, and i know Ramrider knows this, but check out my Predaking thread in RGD, there a some models there that I haven't bothered to copy here.
