I figure i can show off a rough i did abot a year ago. It does actually transform.
It was an AMV idea I had but the design wasn't spacy enough and i was undermanned to actually be able to complete the project.

I am a freelancer. I do Special effects and industrial training animation. Recently I did digital cannonshots and blood FX for "No retreat" it was a class B civil war movie Fillmed in Richmond VA.

I guess i could do a few more bots... I did 6 for my AMV this one is the most complete followed by sunstreak.

OK, I went diggin for stuff and found some roughs.
The first stage is to do some sketches....I lost em somewhere. anyway. you do a layout of how you think the transformation might work. then you build a model that simulates the transformation and you hope everything fits like it did in your head.

The idea was his repair bay could be removed like the original toy.
