Combiner Wars G2 Protectobots Full disclosure: I always thought the G2 Protectobots were UGLY. They're garish in an unappealingly bland way, rather than the over-the-top neon that makes the equally garish Stunticons work, IMO. Working on this set, however, I realized that the real problem is Hot Spot. The individual limbs are actually kind of nice. Anyway first up (in the order in which I completed them) is Groove:
Next up, we have First Aid. I changed the placement of the medical star and added an extra blue stripe along the bottom of his vehicle mode, to give it a more dynamic edge, and I have to say I really like this deco on him.
Thanks, Logic. First Aid is probably my favorite out of the whole bunch. I was in Florida for a few days for a cousin's wedding, so I wasn't able to get to the last two team members until now. Hotspot is, IMO, the one that really brings down the whole set. Get rid of either the blue or the orange, and replace it with black, and he'd be fine. As is, he just has one too many colors on him, and the effect is utterly garish.
Here's the last member of the team, and it's a bit of an unusual choice: I figured if we have a massive oversized motorcycle, why not a ridiculously tiny tank? It also helps that Warpath has a makeshift "shield" mode that can only be achieved using Hot Spot's guns. I actually started the set before it was confirmed Groove was getting a CW release in the US, so I had given some thought to a G2 Rook. I'm not sure what color scheme to use on him, but I might give it a try at some point.
I wish I could say that was my intention, but I didn't even know that guy existed! Anyway, it's supposed to be Warpath, and the color scheme is based on the unreleased G1 repaint (I'm pretty sure the same unreleased color schemes for Beachcomber and Powerglide are what inspired their G2 versions). I have a few alternate versions of him I might post at some point as well as an alternate version of Groove.
Could you show us an image of said Shield Mode? I swear I've seen it before but for the life of me I can't find it again.
