So then, Grimlock goes ape on everyone, withstands a blast from Shockwave, and causes the Cons to leg it. Prime puts him in a headlock to calm him down, then Dynobots leave despite Primes best efforts to convince them otherwise. Meanwhile as the Con's retreat, Shockwave cracks a joke which tickles Soundwave, 'Humour detected, conclusion amusing.' And Skorponok bids them to come to the crater that he's having the Seekers bomb. He gives a big speech, and Trypticon emerges to the surprise of nobody. Still hoping the pay off is good for this.
I'm calling it right now. Megatron comes back as Scorponok crowns himself the leader of the Decepticons to which Megatron goes "This is bad comedy" and blast him to shit and takes over. YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST FOLKS!
Pretty good call and wouldn't surprise me in the slightest. I take this comic for what it is: an '86 movie homage from a guy who was involved in that production and is not about to let ANYONE forget it, some largely predictable plot lines mixed every now and then with one or two that are genuinely interesting (Megatron/Quintesson interaction was pretty darn cool), some major continuity whiffs or alterations (Grimmy & Dinobots now have two separate backstories for dinosaur like altmodes, WTF?), artwork that is at times brilliant when it works and at times somewhat sloppy when it doesn't, some genunine humor now and then (Soundwave's line this issue was great), and ultimately a plot resolution that, though maybe not the most original in the world, will generally at least make sense within its own context, which is more than can often be said for RID or Regeneration One these days.
This is a good book despite the constant whining over TF movie quotes. You'd think the authors were quoting Bay's script how emotional people are getting. Anyway I can't wait for #10 it just keeps getting better and better.
Everyone is jelly that the best movie is the 86 movie and not Bayformers. I bet if it was tons of Bayformers homages everyone would be screaming like fangirls in joy. How dare a G1 story be G1!! HOW DARE IT I SAY!! Quick, get the Transformers commissariat, they must be informed about this asap. That said, I don't mind the 'retcon' of alt modes. It may of been set up to where Grimlock and the Dynobots to have an in story reason/ability to scan earth dinosaurs (especially gaining fleshy bits). Why has no other Autobot or Decepticon used this ability if everyone has it? If it is unique to the Dynobots, then their 'cursed' alt modes are actually blessings in disguise when they fight in the radiation heavy past Earth.
Ignoring your frankly bizarre rant, and addressing your second point, yes that does actually make a modicum of sense. It's often been asked exactly how did the Dynobots go about adopting their Alt-Modes, since trans scanning doesn't exist in IDW. It's always been my assumption that as a unit that's out and about by themselves and often behind enemy lines, that they had the necessary equipment on their ship. So this ret-con does tidy that up a little bit, but still doesn't explain why they don't suffer the rage these days considering they spend 90% of their time in Dino mode. I can't imagine they spend a lot of time meditating, and I certainly hope they don't rip off the Avengers 'I'm always angry' The whole thing could have been done a lot less heavy handedly, and I certainly wouldn't have put it at the top of the list of things that needed ret-conning.
First off, yeah. I'm an unabashed fan of the '86 movie for what it is and while I can understand why some dont' want it blatantly seeping into their established IDW continuity, I truly think if its a G1 continuity being written and one of the guys involved in the '86 movie like Flint Dillle wants to contribute then he absolutely deserves to just like Simon Furman deserved to and it has its place. In this case, moreover, the placement is just about right - a nice side series now and then that won't overtly displace or interfere with the two ongoings, but still is part of the same universe and lets the 86 movie writer do some fun updated twists on old characters and concepts. It's fine, and it's fun. As for the Dynobots...sigh, maybe I suppose. I guess if you view it as why their alt modes would be compatible with Earth dinosaurs then yeah that's OK...but still what is the probability in the first place that both Cybertron and Earth would happen to have these ancient creature forms that just *happen* to be structurally identical to each other in terms of form? Unless there is some *other* direct link between Earth dinosaurs and the origin of these Cybertronian "creature" shapes that we don't know about yet (and hey, maybe one of the IDW writing teams may yet tackle this so I won't count my chickens yet) it would just seem a bit far fetched. And to the "uncontrollable rage" point, I still don't get why upon seeing a Tyrannosaur, Grimmy would go "perfect!" and be enthused about reverting to something like the form that caused him to kill one of his teammates and have to ban himself and his crew from Cybertron. The only explanation would be that in the heat of the moment, he was so hell bent on killing Shockwave that he didn't care and WANTED that rage to be unleashed...which kinda works given Grimmy's state of mind in Spotlight: Shockwave. But then I don't understand why the OTHER Dynobots would be willing to happily go along with it, knowing Grimmy killed one of their number while in that rage alt mode state, so who's to say they wouldn't be next. I dunno, it all just doesn't make sense and seems to have been made more complicated than it needed to be. But, they had to find a way to introduce Trypticon somehow I understand that. Maybe there is still time for either this writing team or Roberts or Barber to pick up the thread and try to weave this story and Spotlight: Shockwave together better. We'll see...
And that's why I should automaticaly like it? Because he deserves to? Because he wrote good (imo) movie once, he's now critique free?
Simmer down chief. Where in my post did I say you personally should automatically like it? You don't have to. Nobody does. All I was saying is he deserves the chance to be involved in Transformers ongoing fiction if he wants to contribute. Look I personally think Regeneration One has been a stinking pile of donkey dung, but my personal opinion on it doesn't mean Simon Furman doesn't deserve the chance to finish out the series the way he had wanted to. He contributed a lot to the Transformers franchise and he deserved the opportunity I think. Now audience reaction, i.e. whether people like it or not, will determine the sales and also whether Furman, and Dille, will *keep* writing for IDW. So if you don't like it, don't read it, and if enough people agree with you then voila Dille will be gone again. I just happen to be in another camp that, although I don't like everything about the Monstrosity series, I like enough about it that I'm okay with having it around.
