    JUDGEMENT

so what is your opinion on the character Prowl's words, thoughts, and actions here in the IDW universe.

lay it all out there how do you feel and why. i hear a lot of opinions thrown around about IDW Prowl, but im looking for some explanations to go with them... and to try and get it all organized in one thread. give specific examples and support with evidence.

i don't want to influence the conversation one way or the other in the beginning so im going to keep my opinions out of it for now.

i havent read all the comics, but ive read MTMTE TPB 1 and 2 and RID 1 along with almost all the TPBs that came before those in IDW.

i put the spoiler thread in the title so we should be safe to let loose with any spoilers. :)

I find IDW Prowl to be a conniving, manipulative bastard... and I love it! Right now he is the most interesting character, at least for me, in the MTMTE ongoing. I am glad that they elected to go back to form after some of what was happening with his character when they were still on Earth. The humans brought out the worst in him I guess. Cold-calculating, analytical, do-whatever-it-takes Prowl is the best!

Building a gateway into Kups head so that he could use him as a mouthpiece, sending the Wreckers on what they thought was a rescue mission to get his hands on the contents of Aquetas, attempting to use Ironfists love of the Wreckers to turn him into a suicide key, and if Overlord is on the Lost Light purely because of Chromedome and his magic fingers...

    Pretty much this.

If ANYONE dies in the upcoming issues, I think it's gonna be Prowl.

And by probably by Autobot hands.

I think that it is his plan all along. Bee will have to do it, and infront of a lot of other 'bots. He is a known Decepticon murderer, he publicly hates the Nails. What better way to ensure an Autobot win the the coming elections by Bee having to put him down. Which I am sure he has a contingency for also.

Although I like the idea, why did Prowl go to lengths to fake his own injury in the previous issue?

He did it to make the Decepticons look bad. Well, worse.

Same with the attack on Omega Supreme. (Wich I believe he was involved in)

To try to make it look like he wasn't behind the explosion at the pen. (which the Cons clearly didn't fall for)

Prowl's journey has been one of the most interesting in the IDWverse. You get glimpses of him in his early years in law enforcement. You get that he tried to abandon Cybertron during the war, but got stuck in it anyway. I don't think Prowl has ever tried or wanted to be a hero. He's been driven to ending the war so that he can get back to the way things were. That's all it is. He wants to win. He thinks the other Autobots are too soft to bring down the killing stroke or to expect the worst from their own. So that's his lot in life.

Some people like to see Prowl as a master manipulator, and I can see why. He's a real good strategist. But as time goes on, he's been more and more willing to get his own hands dirty. He's his own best pawn. Especially since none of the other Autobots EVER seem to do things the way he wants.

He's a grey character who has been slowly turning black, it is the Prowl that he has always been leaning to but also the one we never expected to actually happen. I absolutely love what is going on with Prowl, and I really hope he doesn't die too soon.

This, and furthermore, currently in RID, the backbone for everything he does is trying to establish a secure and lasting peace on Cybertron.

Ratbat, with his assassination attempt, Bombshell with his mind control bugs, Soundwave and shockwave taking down omega supreme, all of these situations are too dangerous to let linger, they had to eliminated or contained immediately. The loose end, Dirge, is only really a loose end because Arcee showed mercy, which I think sort of went unnoticed. She has a heart somewhere behind that crazy beimace and those flaming swords (as an aside on Arcee, I know people have complained about her fightiness, but she has a reputation for being completely ruthless and downright scary, even to other autobots. She is probably one of the most capable fighters in the idwverse, and she knows how to lay a trap.)

Really, Prowl wants to set up bee as the leader of the new Cybertronian government, because he believes (calculates?) Bee is the best possible option to maintain peace and rebuild. Prowl did not sabotage the lost light, he was probably just smuggling a tracking device on board or something like that IMO. he is keeping bee in the dark about Ratbat, bombshell, soundwave and shockwave because he wants to keep Bee free of any consequences should prowl's machinations be discovered. Additionally, Starscream was in on Ratbat and the soundwave and shockwave thing, so if prowl ever gets found out by the general population, he can theoretically take down Starscream alongside himself (not kill but discredit).

I think that prowl is very much still a heroic figure, just he recognizes what needs to be done, and that its ultimately better for the autobots if no one else knows about what he's up to. Same reason he made Kup a mouthpiece so long ago, to win the war, or at least increase the odds.

With all that said, I really don't understand why so many people seem to think mtmte is so much better than rid. One is a tragic comedy (or comedic tragedy), the other is a political thriller of sorts. I think they are both excellent, for completely different reasons. In rid's case, some of the best prowl, Wheeljack, and Starscream characterization ever in this comic. I'm personally not a.huge bumblebee fan, but I sympathize with him in rid and I think barber is doing a great job crafting him as the reluctant leader dealt a shitty hand of cards time and time again.

Personally I've found Prowl's characterisation to be utterly devoid of internal logic and borderline ridiculous. The earlier stuff worked well, especially the whole Kup plan (which was never given the space it deserved and was stopped in its tracks by a crap Zombie sideline comic of all things).

RiD is trying to be House of Cards, but the talent just isn't there to pull it off. Even the big ideas are illogical; If Prowl can easily reformat himself into a walking gun-platform, why didn't every bot in the last war do the same? (Megatron's reformat was equally implausible). It's just daft and pulled me completely out of the comic. Likewise the idea that Arcee can just walk into Decepticon HQ and take out the entire base makes the idea of the war lasting millions of years laughable.

In some respects this isn't entirely down to the current ongoing, but to me the entirety of RiD just reads like fanfic with no long-term plan which is about as smooth as a gear change from Blurr.

I'm still buying it because I'm desperately hoping for something to click it all into place, but I have absolutely no enthusiasm for it these days, which is a shame.

I don't think Prowl "reformatted" himself into a walking gun platform. I think those were some of the weapons cache he discovered back in the day from the Zeta Prime stash that Optimus wanted to be destroyed at the end of (forget the storyline the online thing that is now a trade)
