So these Windblade comics are following the Combiner Wars story?

Combiner Wars is a story that runs through both Windblade and Transformers (formerly known as RiD), alternating between them.

Hmm, that's gonna make it hard for me to follow it then.

'Opening Salvo,' the direct prologue, was Transformers #39. Then Windblade #1 was the first official issue of it, Transformers #40 was the second, Windblade #2 the third, #41 will be the fourth, and Windblade #3 will be the finale.

The Combiner Wars page on TFWiki highlights the requisite issues:

"hey! hey you guys over there! you want to be a combiner?"
    *flash*
    "BEHOLD DEFENSOR!"

    really? :(
i found it difficult at times to work out wtf was going on in some of the panels. i don't seem to have that issue with the other artists in the transformers comics, or at least not nearly as much.

i usually enjoy the comics and just chug along reading them but this one stood out to me as being disappointing, enough for me to log in and check forums to see if i was alone. nope.

The Defensor thing made sense though. They needed another Combiner right away, they had a group of bots that had worked together, Starscream used that.

I don't know how much sense it made but it was funny as hell, and it foreshadows the Ultra Prime combination.

I'm wondering if this event will end with the Enigma if Combination destroyed. That is just too intense to have around. Even the Deceptigod worked by the "preexisting similarity" rules to some extent, as opposed to "the nearest five-six guys."

Now EVEN more curious about what role the individuals' free will plays in these combiners. Is there an opt-out clause?

It made sense in that Starscream needed another combiner, so he made another combiner out of what he had available.

Destroyed or lost somehow probably yeah.

More exploration of the mechanics behind combining would be awesome. Hope Mairghread Scott and Barber are watching Steven Universe for inspiration.

Yeah, I'm really curious as to what the IDW landscape looks like after this event. Like, is Ultra Prime going to be a one-time thing, or is there going to be a lasting ramification there?

Regarding the fate of the enigma itself, I echo that it's probably going to be lost or "destroyed" in a way that leaves a lot of wiggle room in case they need to come back and make Predaking or something.

well sure it made sense in a "we need to sell toys, use this magic macguffin to form the next combiner, no don't worry about any kind of story or explanation or anything" way.

it didn't make sense in a "hey i wonder all the combiners will be formed, will there be any interesting back story or quests involved and i'm looking forward to the storyline of the war getting started" way.

Except it made sense from a story perspective too, I mean sure it was contrived but it still worked. The Protectobots were there, Starscream need another Combiner to save the space bridge, he created a new Combiner.

Yea. They had a team name. Most of the time, that signifies a long association- I'm sure if the Aquabots were there, Riptide would be an arm right night. Even when it hasn't been a long association, it usually signifies at least a close unit.

Who else was convenient? I mean, one could hardly use Optimus, Windblade, Ironhide, and Chromia.

Wonder if James is ever going to use Defensor in his own book.

ok. i guess what i meant more was that it seemed 'cheap' to me that starscream just holds this thing up and hey presto suddenly they are joined together and fighting. no 'what is haaapppeennniiingg to meee' or explanation or detail or look at how they actually combine. they are just standing there one minute, including a totally new character who has no introduction or anything, and combined firing limbs off and stuff the next.

not that they happened to be a 'group' or knew each other and were there, just that it happened so 'magically'.

That`s why I buy TPB, this single issues make my head hurt :)

I read the digital issue, the art is hard to follow, I`m mostly okay with his overall style though, but I prefer Stone and the others... the story is okay, but seeing 3 combiners fight each other is really cool. I guess the enigma will be used for crazy combinations in the future.

I finally read it, expecting the worst from the set, and I for one thought the fight scenes were actually pretty decent (then again, I had already read a summary, so I kinda knew what the art was supposed to be), though I would, of course, have preferred Stone. Plus, there were some well drawn scenes- Prowl being dragged away and the last page being some of them. However, all the small mistakes drag it down for me.
