Hi all, I'm a newbie to the comic world of TFs, and the only readings I've done are the original 80s classics ones that you can buy in various volumes now. I'm currently up to volume 4, issue 42. It's my understanding that a majority of these were written by Bob Budiansky, right? Does Simon Furman eventually take over this line, and if so, when does that happen? Also, is that a good/bad thing? lol
Furman took over as writer from issue #56 onwards. I've not read much of the Marvel series, but the general sentiment is that Furman's run is very good. There's more info on the series on TFWiki: The Transformers (Marvel comic - Transformers Wiki)
Things got A LOT better when Furman came in. The story focus re-shifted to the original characters and it became less about promoting toys (though it still did).
He comes into the US stuff relatively late in the game but did write the strongest stories. The marvel UK run he comes into it fairly early and writes the majority of it. I would say check those out if you can. Although I see as many failings as positives (I'm not a Marvel TF fan like...at all), there's plenty of gems in there
Stick around with Bob's stuff, tho'- you've got the Underbase saga coming up and that's pretty good stuff.
