Why feel ashamed? It was bland but it wasn't abysmal. I for one really liked the first five issues, take that as what you will.
I really liked RG1. But, I really enjoyed the initial Marvel run as well. It also helped I re-read the entire series before starting RG1.
I LOOOOVE the original Marvel run. It has been, is, and will always be some of my favorite TF stuff. I thought RG1 was a TERRIBLE and misconceived sequel. It missed, skipped or outright destroyed pretty much everything that was good about the original run. Terrible, terrible mistake. -ZacWilliam, perhaps ironically while far different in detail the current Transformers vs Joe book from IDW comes FAR closer to capturing the feel of the early Marvel Comic than anything in RG1.
I liked (not loved) RG1. And I don't understand why someone would agonize over it? Like what you like, don't what you don't, there doesn't need to be An Explanation.
If nothing else, the melancholy, angst Prime of the Marvel era has always been one of my favorites. Plus, there's some neat cameos from characters making their first appearances outside of the Dreamwave MTMTE books.
I really enjoyed it, and bought every cover as soon as possible, to show my support. There are things I would have done differently if I was writing, but I like what Furman delivered. I didn't dislike Guidi's artwork, but I felt a little ripped off that we didn't get Wildman or Senior for the entire run. I've re-read it multiple times, and still enjoy it. I like having the option to read Marvel 1-80, then choose RG1 or G2. It's fun to think that just one small decision could make the story go in either direction. Unicron1986, if I recall right, you consistently had the harshest criticism here each month, and were very vocal about it. Did something make you change your mind recently?
I really liked Regeneration 1. I liked the tone and it tied up the 80 issues of Marvel but also carried through a bit of the cartoon season 3 vibe - which understandably is divisive. The colours were gorgeous and it set up great battles I wanted to see. It appealed to my inner 10 year old very nicely and gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling after each issue.
Well in my opinion I look at rg1 as a alternate universe where things went different than generation 2. I still think g2 as it came first is the official follow up to the marvel run but that`s my opinion each of us I guess have our own endings for the marvel run .As for hating rg1 in the beginning I started to read it again and said what the heck it`s still transformers anyway and since I like transformers a lot I changed my opinion towards it.
When I first heard of Regeneration 1, I thought it was going to fill in the gap between Marvel G1 and Generation 2, so that they could finish Generation 2 off with a follow up series. Seriously wanted to see more of Liege Maximo. I got the first volume from Humble Bundle and, it was okay but I think I would've appreciated it more if I read the first 80 issues, or hated it more depending on your point of view. But I'm looking forward to reading more after I finish the Marvel comics. I like Simon Furman a lot when it comes to Transformers, but his biggest flaw is how he ends stories too quickly, the Armada comic, Beast Wars The Ascending, Revelation, and it looks like he might have repeated that flaw in this series too.
This. See also Beast Wars: The Gathering and Beast Wars: The Ascending. Another example of Furman revisiting an established continuity beloved by many a fan and falling into the exact same trappings as outlined by ZacWilliam above.
Five brief things I didn't like about Regeneration One 1. The setting - earth should not have been destroyed 2. Pointless story arcs - the Gene Key arc should have been skipped 3. Rushed story arcs - Jhiaxus didn't get long enough to make his presence felt 4. Bad artwork - lack of detailing to the point some characters looked like blocks 5. Poor pacing - some scenes were dragged over several issues without really any progress
Hated it. Furman tried to weasel so many story lines from his IDW run that he never got to finish in to this "continuation" of his original story. Instead, it felt like he wanted an excuse to write some of the characters that were popular when he wrote them in an attempt to maybe boost his own popularity to get him work again. So in grand fashion he pisses all over the original run by bringing back Scorponok, shoe-horns in the UK continuity that he read people loved by using the Wreckers and having this Ultra Magnus/Galvatron battle, and tries to relive Maximum Dinobots through the Grimlock and the Gene Key story. It read like really bad fan fiction. Instead of celebrating the original run and giving it a proper ending, he ignored most of it and attempted to write a bunch of stories that he thought would get him popular with fans again so he could get on a book again (ie: Prime vs. Megatron, Ultra Magnus vs. Galvatron, Starscream and Shockwave return, Scorponok returns, Jhiaxus returns, more focus on Grimlock, and finally Rodimus Prime shows up). It was the comic that got me to appreciate MTMTE and RID more than I would have normally. I appreciate the effort, I appreciate the idea, but I loathe the execution. Furman tried to fit 50 issues of story in to 20 issues and it didn't work. At all.
that`s the problem I had with rg1 too many holes in the plot and only focus on furman`s favorite characters. I`m glad at least rodimus showed up.. but at least fans can choose the ending they like G2 or RG1.
