Probably because it's easier for the parents to pick up one or two figures at a time as money allows, rather than buying a $40 or $50 gift set for their kid. It would have been cool if they released giftsets as store exclusives.

Thanks for the comparison pics Transfan2. Anime accuracy be damned, I like Wideload and Bonecrusher over their Superlink counterparts.
