I like the City Commander look, but the head(and price) puts me off. A new Third Party figure might be alright, but I'd rather see Hasbro/Takara do it better/cheaper.

 

I very much like the City Commander upgrade set from FP combined with Classics UM to represent possibly the best Ultra Magnus rendition that G1 fans are inclined to see.

That being said - it really does irk me how my Classics OP is smaller than the beefier UM. I think it is about time a great 3rd party add-on comes out that really fills Classics OP out to his true heroic self. I mean, it isn't like UM is doing all the butt kicking in the shows.

 

I think the FP version works very good for me(better than just a white prime standing there).I can see where everyone is coming from for a better UM.I'd love to have a UM that could carry cars.I think a MP version would turn out like shit,they would have to partsform the hell out of it. UM is like a triple changer.You will always sacarfice 1 mode of another.

Unless FP can rerelease and can take away the bloke of it and make it more rounded.Until then,i think thats the best we are getting for a UM.

 

My problem with City commander is how MUCH of the toy is the BFGun. The gun is so big that the toy sometimes has trouble holding it up... *shrugs*
I want a Ultra Magnus that has little to nothing BUT the armor, and I'd like the 'magnus' to be Ultra classed before putting the armor on... shoulder to shoulder with Ultra Silverbolt when he's 'white optimus'  

 

As a HUGE Ultra Magnus fan I view the FP City Commander perfect for the rest of the classic figures, G1 characters with a modern styling... However, I wouldn't beg a 3rd party to make an "accurate" G1 UM when Takara more than likely has a Masterpiece Magnus in the works, so I'm playing the wait and see approach.

Sweet jebus I am glad I bought it back when I did. Though there is a store in my area that is still selling the 2nd gen trailers for 100 or so.

 

I bought the Dr. Wu face for my City Commander. Makes him remind me of Ultra Magnus way more than it did with the default face. Though I do agree FP should have cut the BFG and make it look more like a car carrier.

 

It does irk me that the City Commander had a BFG. I'm sure that if Fansproject didn't include it in the design, they might have been able to produce a car carrier out of the set, though I wonder if that might have been too close to Hasbro's design and made them an even bigger target.

 

Not very posable, his shoulders are way too far back, he's too small, he can't carry anything in vehicle mode...

Don't get me wrong, I actually like mine very much, but he's far from the definitive Ultra Magnus that I'd like. On a personal note, I really like white Optimus, and wish Hasbro would release one once in a while. Or a Nemesis Prime. Or just redeco an Optimus as anything but "Optimus Prime with a less screen-accurate combination of red and blue."
