New toy safety legislation going through in the US

Bill targets toy safety -- chicagotribune.com

It seems there's a bill expected to pass this week which increases the toy safety restrictions - it seems primarily targeted at lead content in toys from this article's summary.

However, what could be found interesting is these quotes from the article:

Quote:
The deal would require manufacturers and importers to subject toys and other nursery products to strict safety tests before they hit store shelves.
Quote:
It would increase the size and budget of the agency, expand government oversight of imported goods, impose new safety standards on all-terrain vehicles and ban six controversial compounds used in plastics.
This could potentially make things harder on importers in the US, depending on the lead content of the toys in question... and does anyone know anything about the plastic compounds used? I just hope they're not in Transformers... we don't need a recall.

Hasbro, most likely.

But what about the Japanese companies? For all we know it could have an affect on imports to the US.

Considering your average Gundam FIX or SOC isn't really a "toy or nursery product" in the sense of the "American toy industry" and they won't be selling them at Walmart, I don't think it's going to affect imports. They are a specialty item and aren't for kids anyways (technically). Or at least dumbass American kids.

I swear, all kids are going to be allowed to play with in 100 years, are round balls made out of some kind of indestructable non toxic material, so they don't hurt themselves.

Fixed.

I'd offer my $.02 on the subject, but I believe that falls under "politics".
