Could just be some kid who got it as a freebie (these were promotional giveaway items, right?) and thought, "ew, plain white is so boring."
I can hardly fault him for that. Lord knows kids have done plenty of things like that to toys, never thinking for a second that they might be worth something someday. At least this one survived, albeit painted... I bet most of these are just buried in a landfill somewhere.
And hey, this might be a way for someone to get a white Kirk cheaper than they otherwise would... plus the cost of some gentle paint thinner, of course.  | |
